This "Best Of" is compiled from the funniest excerpts of the first Radio Series broadcast in 1965, written by Barry Took and Marty Feldman and starring Kenneth Horne, "the uncrowned head of the show." Also featured are Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden, and Bill Pertwee. This classic BBC LP is on CD for the first time ever.
To be fair, this is a bit of a mixed bag and closer to 2.5 stars. I appreciated the format of the show, and the band and singers are absolutely amazing. Humor is something that sometimes transcends time, and sometimes it (really) doesn't. For example, parts of the act would be considered racist according to modern sensibilities, and it's hard not to cringe at those bits. But some of the snappily delivered zingers still land.
It was interesting, a significant amount of the comedy was outdated and/or offensive, however it gave me a glimpse of what people considered funny in the 60s, so for educational purposes and the fact that a few jokes were indeed funny I gave 3 stars.
I dabble in and out of this programme as I listen to it when BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast a season on a weekday morning about 8.30am. Though it *is* now dated (it was broadcast from the mid 1960s for about five years) it is still funny! Added to my to keep collection.
