This is a collection of essays. Some are interesting, others not at all. The chapter on Cowdery's part as scribe for the Book of Mormon is particularly intriguing.

A disappointing collection of essays, although related to Oliver Cowdery, that taught me little about the man. I would have enjoyed more emphasis on the period of his life wherein he slips from is position as Associate President of the Church to that of a disaffected member. I would also have appreciated more time spent exploring the personality of the man, and his reasons for leaving. There is little psychological analysis or delving into the heart of Cowdery. Despite those serious flaws, there were 2 or 3 worthwhile essays in the collection. I wish there was more literature out there about him.

The book is a collection of articles presented at a Church history symposium at BYU, and thus, there are some gaps in Oliver's life that I wish were covered (we need more about his rebaptism for sure) and some overlap where several articles discussed some of the same things. And the final article, addressing the creation of a monument to Oliver in Richmond, was pretty boring (I skimmed it). Still, the articles about Oliver as a scribe, Oliver's role in the Kirtland Safety Society, and Oliver's law practice were outstanding.

Interesting essay compilation about Oliver Cowdrey. Learned a lot I didn't know...both about him and the times. Especially found the article on the bank failure interesting. My main wish was that the footnotes were at the bottom of each page (instead of the end of the chapter) so I could more easily reference them as I read...so much info in them.
