Canadian born, Manly Palmer Hall is the author of over 150 published works, the best known of which are Initiates of the Flame, The Story of Healing, The Divine Art,Aliens Magick and Sorcery The Secret Teachings of All Ages, and An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy. He was also the author of a masonic curiosity, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry in 1923, more than thirty years before he joined a lodge. The preface of later editions states "At the time I wrote this slender volume, I had just passed my twenty-first birthday, and my only contact with Freemasonry was through a few books commonly available to the public." Later, in 1944, he wrote The Secret Destiny of America which popularized the myth of a masonic purpose for the founding of the USA. In 1950 he weighed in again on the meaning of Freemasonry with his booklet: Masonic Orders of Fraternity. *** Initiated: June 28, 1954 Passed: September 20, 1954 Raised November 22, 1954 Jewel Lodge No. 374 Source: Grand Lodge of California records ; William R. Excellent overview of some of the characteristics and meaning of each of the zodiac signs. Also fascinating to see the connection to reincarnation, which really ties this all together. Easy, fast and enjoyable read that I may find myself reading over again in the give future as I continue to learn more about astrology.
It assumes more knowledge of Astrology than I have or care to have. Hence the three stars. It follows on from my reading of 'The Secret History of the World' and its discussion of Gnosticism.
The book tries to show that astrology deals with more than the predicting of the future but the course of the soul throughout its incarnations from Aries to Pisces. The horoscope shows the bill of Karma presented for payment at the time of birth.
An example of reincarnation given is that of Julian the Apostate here stated to be the reincarnation of Alexander the Great.
The doctrine of Forgiveness of sins is seen as an excuse used by people who do not want the hard work of appeasing Karma. In such a belief that abundant Grace of God in Christ is rejected to the loss of one's soul.
Manly P Hall's writing style is somewhat ornate. The book shows his intimate knowledge of these arcane matters. Hall will continue to be read in the years to come for whilst ornate his style is still accessible.
