Unfrogettable
The second novel of the so-called Detective Sgt. Elk Series, The Fellowship of the Frog, which was written in 1925, some 15 years after Elk made his first appearance in Wallace’s fiction, is probably one of the best-known novels by the author — at least in Germany, where its cinema adaptation by the renowned Austrian director Harald Reinl inaugurated an entire series of atmospheric Wallace movies that Germans of my generation practically grew up on.
Even in its own right, however, The Fellowship of the Frog has a lot to offer in terms of suspense and whodunnit-atmosphere because until the very end, the identity of the scheming master criminal, the Frog, who has built up an intimidating gang of criminals that can truly dare brave the police, will remain unclear, there being several possible suspects a reader can choose from. The most obvious one is Ezra Maitland, an uncouth and unsensitive old capitalist, who runs a real estate business which has literally popped up from nowhere, but there is also the hawk-faced American Joshua Broad, who always happens to be on the scene of any crime committed by the Fellowship, beating the police by a nose. And let’s not forget about the mysterious John Bennett, an elderly man of surprisingly immense physical power, who keeps his job a secret from his two adult children, Ella and Ray. On the other side of the law, we have the debonair public prosecutor Dick Gordon, who inevitably falls in love with Ella, and his effective counterpart, a veteran Sergeant, down-to-earth, caustic and with a sieve of a memory for dates and names, and, last not least, there is his morose assistant Balder, who has been repeatedly passed over when it came to promotions.
The Fellowship of the Frog runs the gamut from ruthless capitalists to down-on-their-luck tramps, suggesting – at least, that’s how I take it – that crime is as much a vice of the high and mighty as a condition shaping the lives of the unfortunate poor. Of course, the fact that Ezra Maitland, who wallows in wealth, is an unbearably vulgar man who lives like a miser in a shabby old house is part of the riddle cloaking the Frog but it can also be seen in the light of something like an underlying message, not so much intended by Wallace, as offering itself to be read into his text. The mystery of John Bennett, too, will offer a more pensive reader some food for thought, as it allows the author to paint one especially dramatic scene at the end of his novel, where the pace really picks up at an incredible rate. Quite as much as Anthony Trollope could hardly ever write a novel that did not contain at least one hunting scene, Mr. Wallace was incapable of doing without the plot element of the heroine’s being kidnapped by the villain, and so, the Frog will fall in love with Ella and take her hostage of his self-interested love, but unlike in other novels, this plot element is executed rather hastily and does not allow Ella to display the usual pluck and inventiveness that make Wallace’s female characters so endearing. All in all, Ella remains a rather conventional damsel in distress, not adding a lot of interest to the story.
As usual with Wallace, you also sometimes get a few laughs out of the story, mostly from Elk’s wry sense of humour, but also from his interactions with the unaccommodating Balder, as the two examples following might show:
I am going to conclude my review with a remarkable insight on the part of the omniscient narrator, which got me thinking, and is still doing so:

Natürlich ist dies nur meine persönliche Meinung und nur weil ich diesem Buch diese Bewertung zukommen lassen, heißt es nicht, dass es auf jeden anderen zutrifft. Das Buch wurde mir freundlicherweise vom Verlag als Rezensionsexemplar zur Verfügung gestellt. Dies beeinflusst jedoch nicht meine ehrliche Meinung.
Ich habe den Film zum Buch nie gesehen und auch andere Bücher des Autors nicht gelesen. Ich bin also vollkommen unvoreingenommen rangegangen.
Normallerweise sind Krimis nicht mein präferiertes Genre aber ich wollte mich mit diesem Buch mal aus meiner Komfortzone wagen.
Der Schreibstil war wirklich gewöhnungsbedürftig. Ich hatte häufiger mal Probleme bestimmte Sachen zu verstehen, was durch die Sichtwechsel nicht unbedingt vereinfacht wurde. Nach einer (langen) Weile hatte ich mich aber dran gewöhnt.
Ich bin von meinen anderen Büchern gewohnt, dass die Charaktere eine gewisse Charaktertiefe besitzen aber leider war diese nicht sonderlich stark zu finden. Es gab auch zwei Frauen, die auch eine Rolle für den Plot spielen aber den Bechdel Test würde dieses Buch denke ich nicht bestehen.
Der Plot war anfangs etwas verwirrend und ich hatte das Gefühl, dass ich ein anderes Buch hätte zuerst lesen müssen aber wie oben schon erwähnt habe ich einfach eine Weile gebraucht um in das Buch reinzufinden. Leider war dann für meine Verhältnisse mir relativ schnell klar, wer der Frosch mit der Maske eigentlich ist und was sein Motiv ist (was ich nebenbei bemerkt etwas schwach fand).
Warum ich jetzt doch 3 Sterne gebe: Ich denke, dass das Buch ein Produkt seiner Zeit ist, was den Schreibstil und die Entwicklung des Plots angeht. Im Großen und Ganzen hatte ich aber Spaß beim Lesen.

A maga műfajában érdekes, olvastam már az írótól jobbat és gyengébbet is.
A szöveg nagyon régies, pár dolog kitalálható.
Jó volt ezt a fizio-kezelésekre várva, közben olvasgatni. Van, aki ott is beviszi a telefont, de én szeretek ilyenkor vinni valami egyszerűt, amúgy tilos is a telefon, de ma kit zavar az ilyen:-I
Hozzá kell tennem azért kapott végül 4 csillagot, mert néha totál vicces volt, nem akart az lenni, de szinte önparódia is alakult ki:)

It reads very much like his Black Mask pulp contemporaries, lots of action with more clubs and knives and fewer guns. Both inspectors are also much more wholesome than their 20's fictional American counterparts were portrayed. There's still a fair amount of corruption and violence, hard-boiled to say the least, and not a drawing room mystery for the most part. As usual the love interest is a very thin character who's mostly a victim, no strong women in this novel. Sort of reminds me of Hammet's Red Harvest, a fun read. It's been said that Wallace influenced many later writers, quite possibly, I'm not a pulp expert but this was published pretty early.

Pure Wallace! Who is controlling the tramps trade union "the frogs" who is John Bennett, Sgt Elk is baffled! I did work most of it out before the end but some real surprises came up along the way. This is a good old-fashioned mystery one of Wallace's best.
P.S. Did Graham Greene consciously or subconsciously take the name of Harry Lime from this book for "The third man" or was it a coincidence. For Harry Lyme appears in "the fellowship of the frog" a book that was written almost 25 years before "the third man."

Lots of humor in this one. I love Inspector Elk. He can't remember dates, so he can't pass the history portion of the exam that would allow him to be promoted. He's a terrific detective, though!

"Der Frosch mit der Maske" war mir nicht unbekannt, den Film kannte ich schon, die Edgar Wallace Filme laufen nämlich immer bei uns, sobald sie im Fernsehen sind.
Als ich den einen Tag in der Buchhandlung war, fiel mir diese Buch zufällig in die Hände und ich hab mich dazu entschieden, es gleich mit zunehmen. Die Filme gefallen mir nämlich sehr gut und ich wollte gerne auch mal ein Buch von Wallace lesen.
Die Geschichte ist sehr einfach geschrieben und man hat als Leser keine Probleme der Handlung zu folgen.
Die Handlung ist und bleibt von Anfang an spannend, es ist nicht immer klar in welche Richtung sich die Handlung entwickelt, es gibt spannende Wendung. Der britische Humor fehlt natürlich auch nicht.
Mir hat das Buch gut gefallen und ich werde bestimmt noch andere Bücher von Edgar Wallace lesen.

Deutsche Übersetzung hölzern und verwirrend.

Ich war mir 100%ig sicher, die Verfilmung dieses Buches vor zig Jahren bereits gesehen zu haben. Doch konnte ich mich bis zum Schluss nicht an die Handlung erinnern. Nur winzigkleine Bruchstücke kamen mir in irgendeiner Weise bekannt vor.
Da dieses Buch ja bekanntlich ein wenig älter ist, ist auch die Schreibweise ... hm ... sagen wir, gewöhnungsbedürftig für jemanden, der bisher noch nicht viele ältere Bücher gelesen hat. Aber nach den ersten 50 Seiten kam ich gut in die Handlung rein, was sich auch bis zum Schluss hielt.
Der Frosch mit der Maske ist ein, wie ich finde, sehr spannender Krimi, bei dem das Mitraten qausi dazugehört und sehr viele Verwirrungen hervorruft. Kurz vor Schluss dachte ich, den "Frosch" zu kennen und am Ende war es doch jemand, den ich zwar zu meinen drei Verdächtigen zählte, ihn aber dann wieder verworfen hatte.
Am Anfang finde ich die Handlungen ein wenig verwirrend (und das nicht nur wegen der "alten Schreibweise"), sondern weil die Personen und deren Bedeutungen noch umklar waren und die Sprünge zu den einzelnen Personen noch nicht so flüssig, was sich später besserte.

Free | Better than expected, though not by much, very slow | This was full of tropes of the time, the big criminal network that doesn't actually seem to do anything, the Master Criminal who pulls the strings of his empire from behind the scenes, with no particular motive and little real reward, the ineffective police with no methods deployed to stop it all, action that consists of simply changing the scenery every few pages instead of actually having things happen... And yet it wasn't as ridiculous as many of these books are to the modern reader. It was, though, horribly slow, and the identity of the Master Criminal was so clear, so early, which makes it feel even slower as you wait for the book to catch up.

I knew who the Frog was early on and identified a misleading piece of major evidence as soon as it came up, but the investigation was interesting so I kept going. And I hadn't foreseen everything. A well told crime novel.

Vila era mai mare decât celelalte de prin partea locului. Avea faţada împodobită cu bârne şi acoperişul de şindrilă. Oprit în faţa porţii, Richard Gordon stătu în loc cuprins de oarecare admiraţie. Casa era de pe timpul Reginei Elisabetha; dar interesul şi admiraţia lui nu erau nici ale unui amator de antichităţi, nici ale unui horticultor, cu toate că-i plăcea covorul de flori de culori diferite ce părea întins peste întreaga grădină, iar miresmele trandafirilor îi desfătau simţurile. Nu-l uimise nici aerul de bună întreţinere şi de curăţenie care umplea tot cuprinsul, nici poteca de cărămizi roşii bine frecate care ducea până la uşă, nici perdelele strălucitor de albe dindărătul gemuleţelor încadrate în rame de plumb.
Ceea ce, însă, îi oprise cu adevărat privirea era o fată aşezată într-un jilţ de nuiele căptuşit cu roşu, ce trona în mijlocul unei mici pajişti, la umbra unui dud. Dick, care deşi era de treizeci de ani părea totuşi a fi de optsprezece, cu obrazul său neted şi tânăr; mai fusese întâmpinat şi altădată cu acest ton adresat de obicei băieţandrilor şi se ţinu să nu râdă.
― Uite găleata şi aici e fântâna, arătă cu mâna fata. Aş trimite servitoarea să-ţi ajute, dar n-avem servitoare şi nici n-am avut vreodată!
― Atunci, servitoarea a pierdut un loc foarte bun, zise Dick, căci grădina asta e cu adevărat încântătoare.
Fata nici nu aprobă, nici nu se împotrivi. Poate că-i părea rău că-i arătase atâta familiaritate.
Între ei parcă se deschise un gol, cât timp aşteptau umplerea găleţilor. Dar după ce Dick porni cu ele spre maşină, pe şosea, ea se luă după dânsul.
― Eu credeam că e o… ― cum i-ai zis? Lizzie?
― Pentru mine ea este Lizzie, răspunse hotărât Dick pe când umplea radiatorul marelui Rolls, şi niciodată nu va fi altceva.
Fata se învârti în jurul maşinii cercetându-o amănunţit.
― Nu ţi-e frică să conduci o maşină atât de mare? întrebă ea. Eu aş muri de frică. E aşa de enormă şi aşa de greu de mânuit.
Dick se opri cu găleata în mână.
― Frică? exclamă el, lăudăros. „Frica” e o vorbă pe care am şters-o de mult din veselul dicţionar al tinereţii mele.
Ceea ce, însă, îi oprise cu adevărat privirea era o fată aşezată într-un jilţ de nuiele căptuşit cu roşu, ce trona în mijlocul unei mici pajişti, la umbra unui dud. Fata avea o carte în mână şi o cutie mare plină cu bomboane de ciocolată lângă dânsa. Părul ei avea culoarea aurului vechi, un aur vechi plin de viaţă şi de lucire, ce îi împodobea o faţă fără cusur, iar când îşi întoarse capul spre Gordon, el mai văzu şi o pereche de ochi gravi şi întrebători, nişte ochi mari, adânci, mai mult cenuşii decât albaştri… Fata tresări şi se ridică din jilţ când Dick se apropiase.
― Îmi pare foarte rău că vă supăr ― şi Dick, cu pălăria în mână, zâmbea, scuzându-se ― dar îmi trebuie puţină apă pentru biata mea Lizzie. A apucat-o o sete nemaipomenită.
Fata se încruntă o clipă apoi începu să râdă.
― Lizzie! ― vrei să zici, maşina? Dacă vrei să vii până în spatele casei, am să-ţi arăt unde este fântâna.
Dick o urmă, întrebându-se cine putea să fie fata asta. Simţise în glasul ei un oarecare ton de superioritate. Era tonul obişnuit al unei fetişcane mature când vorbeşte cu un băiat de aceeaşi vârstă cu dânsa. Dick, care deşi era de treizeci de ani părea totuşi a fi de optsprezece, cu obrazul său neted şi tânăr; mai fusese întâmpinat şi altădată cu acest ton adresat de obicei băieţandrilor şi se ţinu să nu râdă.
― Uite găleata şi aici e fântâna, arătă cu mâna fata. Aş trimite servitoarea să-ţi ajute, dar n-avem servitoare şi nici n-am avut vreodată!
― Atunci, servitoarea a pierdut un loc foarte bun, zise Dick, căci grădina asta e cu adevărat încântătoare.
Fata nici nu aprobă, nici nu se împotrivi. Poate că-i părea rău că-i arătase atâta familiaritate.
Între ei parcă se deschise un gol, cât timp aşteptau umplerea găleţilor. Dar după ce Dick porni cu ele spre maşină, pe şosea, ea se luă după dânsul.
― Eu credeam că e o… ― cum i-ai zis? Lizzie?
― Pentru mine ea este Lizzie, răspunse hotărât Dick pe când umplea radiatorul marelui Rolls, şi niciodată nu va fi altceva.
Fata se învârti în jurul maşinii cercetându-o amănunţit.
― Nu ţi-e frică să conduci o maşină atât de mare? întrebă ea. Eu aş muri de frică. E aşa de enormă şi aşa de greu de mânuit.
Dick se opri cu găleata în mână.
― Frică? exclamă el, lăudăros. „Frica” e o vorbă pe care am şters-o de mult din veselul dicţionar al tinereţii mele.

Už se mi do žádné knížky od EW nechtělo, ale nakonec jsem zkusil ještě Žabí bratrstvo - a udělal jsem dobře. Ne, není to hodnotnější ani promyšlenější kniha, ale je to rozhodně zábavnější kniha. Kniha, která mi připomněla, co mě na Edgaru Wallaceovi v mládí bavilo.
Hned na začátku máme představení tajemné organizace Žabí bratrstvo, a hned následuje ďábelská vražda detektiva neznámým mužem, šéfem tohohle bratrstva.
Pak nastává chvíle na představení postav. Máte tam hrdinu, mladého, hezkého, schopného, mužného. Krásnou dívku, do které se okamžitě zamiluje a která bude mít za úkol omdlévat a být unášena. O její přízeň bude bojovat hned několik mužů – samozřejmě, včetně hlavního padoucha. Pak je tu její otec, který má tajemství, její slabošský bratr, který má problémy, jeho zkažená přítelkyně a její tajný manžel, tajemný šéf firmy, ve které bratr pracuje… a pak bratrův kolega, který je přátelský, neškodný a snaží se všem pomáhat, čím je od počátku jasné, že to je ve skutečnosti hlavní zlosyn (sorry za spoiler, ale pokud jste v životě přečetli více než pět knih, tak vás tohle fakt nepřekvapí). Jo a ještě tajemný Američan, který je vždy na těch důležitých místech, aby dělal důležité věci – včetně likvidace padoucha, což je dost překvapivé. A detektiv, který je hrdinovi k ruce a který má na svědomí většinu vtipných vět.
Na rozdíl od ostatních knížek, co jsem v poslední době od Wallaceho četl, tohle mělo fakt odpich a pořád se tam něco děje a po hrdinech někdo střílí či se je snaží vyhodit do luftu. Zlo je všudypřítomné a všemocné a jediné, co nedokáže, je trefit se do kladných postav. Jinak unáší policejní vozy, zabijí lidi ve vězeních a likviduje svědky na požádání. Jsou tam solidní akční scény a všechno vrcholí v okamžiku, kdy se schyluje k popravě, které se snaží hrdinové zabránit… ovšem Žábakovi lidé přerušili telefonní spojení, vykolejili vlaky a vyhodili do vzduchu silnice, takže je to poměrně náročné tomu zabránit. Hrdina se k tomu všemu ještě dostane do zajetí, aby z něj rafinovaným způsobem utekl (v té době to pro mě byl úplně nové – použít elektřinu k omráčení věznitelů), serval se se zlosyny a zastavil popravu v hodině dvanácté (tedy, ne tak úplně, ale to už je na delší vyprávění). No a pak už jen odstřelit padoucha a chystat svatbu.
Je to škvár? Rozhodně. Náhody, které hrdinům pomáhají, jsou fakt už na úrovni zázraků a padouch vytváří šílené plány, jen aby získal dívku, po které touží. Ale na rozdíl od ostatních věcí, co jsem četl, je tohle funkční škvár, ze kterého chápete, proč se Wallace stal takovým fenoménem. Láska, nebezpečí, tajemství, překvapivé zvraty, tajné místa a ještě tajnější organizace, neprávem odsouzený k smrti, závod s časem, démonický zločinec, vedle kterého působí Fantomas jako sígr Horáček z Macha a Šebestové. Prostě pulp ve své krystalické podobě.
Atmosféru tady dokreslují i ilustrace Václava Junka, které fakt dělají velkou část celkového žážitku.

Elk read the short and terrible record. Born in Guernsey in 1873, the man had been six times convicted before he was twenty (the minor convictions are not designated by letters in the code). In the space at the foot of the blank in which particulars were given of his crime, were the words:
“Dangerous; carries firearms.” In another hand, and in the red ink which is used to close a criminal career, was written: “Died at sea. Channel Queen. Black Rock. Feb. 1, 1898.”
Elk remembered the wreck of the Guernsey mail packet on the Black Rocks.
He turned back the page to read particulars of the dead man’s crimes, and the comments of those who from time to time had been brought into official contact with him. In these scraps of description was the real biography. “Works alone,” was one comment, and another; “No women clue—women never seen with him.” A third scrawl was difficult to decipher, but when Elk mastered the evil writing, he half rose from the chair in his excitement. It was:
“Add to body marks in general D.C.P. 14 frog tattooed left wrist. New. J. J. M.”
The tramps of England have formed a trade union! And they have adopted the frog as their official symbol!
If it only were as simple as that. But this is an Edgar Wallace crime novel, so, of course, there has to be something more nefarious hiding behind the organisation that spreads over the country like a wildfire. Like the seemingly random attacks on people, carried out by people with frog tattoos.
How does it all tie to the grumpy old owner Maitlands Consolidated? Where do the mysterious trips John Bennet, whose beautiful daughter has caught the eye of Assistant Director of Prosecutions, Richard Gordon, and whose son Ray works for Ezra Maitland, take him? And why would the rich American Joshua Broad choose to come all the way to London to try his hand as a private detective? At times, you would think, everyone in this novel goes out of their way to act as suspiciously as possible.
Of, Wallace, my Wallace! Now this is a book I can honestly say belongs to the top tier of his creations. Mystery and romance in a package of pretend personas galore. At times, it seems, almost every other person in this story leads a double life. So it's no wonder the Author managed to mislead me for a moment. This time, however, he does sprinkle enough hints around to put together the picture in broad stokes, even if some minor details may stay missing until the final reveal.

Ich hatte in meinem Leben bisher keinen Wallace gelesen oder Verfilmungen dazu gesehen. Der Name sagt mir zweifelsohne auch etwas. Die popkulturelle Bedeutung ist mir bewusster als das Werk des Schriftstellers selbst.
Ich bin auch nicht wirklich der begeisterte Krimi- und/oder Thriller-Leser. Ich habe den einen oder anderen in meinem Leben gelesen, aber die wenigsten haben mich gefesselt oder haben sich tief bei mir eingebrannt, sodass ich weitestgehend erwartungsfrei an die Lektüre dieses Buches gegangen bin, welches bereits 1925 im Original erschienen ist. 1926 deutsche Erstveröffentlichung. Quasi zum 100. Geburtstag nochmal aufgelegt.
Und trotz des Alters muss ich zugeben: das Werk funktioniert. Das Tempo ist stakkatohaft. Die Gewalt ist oberflächlich beschrieben. Die Charaktere ergeben sich nicht aus den Beschreibungen, mehr aus ihren Handlungen. Das Werk schreitet in diesem schnellen Tempo dahin, und nimmt einen mit, streut aber durchgehend genug Hinweise, um miträtseln und tatsächlich auf die ein oder andere Art auch mitfiebern zu können. Die Thematik ist bisweilen etwas abgedreht, die Methoden und die Reaktionen auch. Die große Emotio streift das Werk nicht, es verwendet sehr stoisch und direkt, allerdings auch sehr erfolgreich seine Stereotype, und trotzdem funktioniert es.
Ich war schon ein wenig baff, weil der verwendete Stil durchgehend und konsistent ist. Die Auflösung des Buches ist befriedigend, und trotzdem schafft Wallace es, das zu erwartende mehrfach herauszuzögern und in Zweifel zu ziehen. Insgesamt also trotz 100 Jahren ein verblüffend flüssig zu lesender und tatsächlich guter Thriller. Es passiert nicht mehr häufig, dass ich 400 Seiten an einem Tag lese.

Dunkle Gassen, flackernde Gaslaternen und dieses leise, unangenehme Gefühl im Nacken, beobachtet zu werden – genau so fühlt sich Der Frosch mit der Maske an. Edgar Wallace lässt hier nicht einfach einen Krimi von der Leine, sondern ein perfides Katz-und-Maus-Spiel, das erstaunlich frisch wirkt, obwohl es fast ein Jahrhundert auf dem Buckel hat. Spannung baut sich nicht mit Gewalt auf, sondern schleicht sich an, Satz für Satz, Szene für Szene, bis man merkt, dass man längst mittendrin steckt.
Dick Gordon und Inspector Elk sind ein Duo, das Spaß macht: clever, bissig, manchmal herrlich überfordert und dadurch umso menschlicher. Der Frosch selbst bleibt lange ein Schatten, ein Gerücht, eine Drohung – und genau das macht ihn so wirkungsvoll. Immer wieder diese kurzen Momente, in denen man denkt, jetzt hab ich’s… nur um direkt danach wieder Zweifel zu haben. Kopfkino vom Feinsten.
Besonders reizvoll ist diese Ausgabe aus dem Coppenrath Verlag. Die überarbeitete Übersetzung mit den neu eingefügten Passagen fühlt sich runder an, dichter, atmosphärischer. Dazu die aufwendig gestalteten Extras, die nicht wie Spielerei wirken, sondern die Geschichte wirklich vertiefen. Hier wird nicht nur gelesen, hier wird geblättert, entdeckt, gestaunt.
Klar, manches ist klassisch Wallace: etwas pathetische Dialoge, moralisch klare Linien, ein Hauch Theatralik. Aber genau das gehört dazu und verleiht dem Ganzen seinen Charme. Ein Krimi wie ein eleganter Gentleman mit dunklem Geheimnis – altmodisch, ja, aber mit Stil, Witz und erstaunlich viel Zug nach vorne.
Unterm Strich ein echter Klassiker, der in dieser Schmuckausgabe zeigt, warum Edgar Wallace bis heute funktioniert. Perfekt für lange Abende, schwarzen Kaffee und die leise Frage: Wer trägt die Maske wirklich?

Well, this was fun! Edgar Wallace has an amazing imagination, when it comes to devising depraved criminal activity. Very entertaining.
So, it seems there is a giant "fellowship" among the down and outs. A huge slice of the great unwashed, so to speak, have little frog tattoos on their wrists. They seem to engage in various acts of spontaneous crime and mayhem. But, the rabble are basically a front to distract from the more serious crimes carried out by the leaders of the frog fellowship. People are being murdered and so forth.
Richard Gordon, a prosecutor, and Sgt. Elk, set out to unmask the head frog and bring him to justice. But it seems that the Frog has some insiders at Scotland Yard, who help captured criminals escape and who help misdirect the forces of justice. Something like that.
Along the way, Gordon meets and falls in love with the shapely-limbed, Ella Bennett. There's something shady about Ella's father, John Bennett of Horsham, and her brother seems to get into the clutches of unscrupulous people, primarily through his infatuation with Lola Bassano, who is married to a second-rate, ex pugilist, Lew Brady, but who manages to keep Ray in the dark about this. Then, there's Philo Johnson, who seems to be a clerk for Ezra Maitland, a miserly tycoon. Johnson is also a friend of Ray, who works for Maitland at the beginning of this book, and is also infatuated with Ella.
Well, I've probably left a bunch of stuff out, but clearly, the relationships are convoluted, and straightening them all out will take some time. Wonderful fun!

Only after an undercover Scotland Yard man is murdered by the criminal mastermind known as the Frog, do the Prosecutor's Office and Scotland Yard really start investigating the criminal hiding his identity behind a rubber mask and his "fellowship" comprising of "tramps" identifiable by a lopsided tattoo of a frog on their left wrist...
This was an interesting mystery with many twists and curve-balls and as many suspects and misdirections. The pacing was a tad slow at times, creating some unnecessarily dull moments, and the true identity of the villain was rather predictable despite the author throwing in multiple suspects and multiple possible motives into the mix.
What bothered me, and reduced the rating, was the last couple of chapters, when the main motive of the villain ended up being a woman and his determination to force her to marry him, and the rather comical effect of the race-to-the-prison chapter.
Unnecessary, if you ask me, making the Frog slightly omnipotent and omniscient, while at the same time diminishing his "genius" and reach when it turned out, he just wanted the girl...A girl who seemed nothing more than a trinket to be fought over.
This was an interesting mystery with many twists and curve-balls and as many suspects and misdirections. The narration feels a bit choppy and rushed and I had to struggle to keep up and connect the dots between adjacent paragraphs at times.
That said, it is a pretty decent spy/mafia thriller (which is not really my cup of tea) and a relatively fast read, so it can serve perfectly as a palate cleanser.
It also did take me some time to figure out the big bad - I did not guess before we were given the obvious hint - being shown an action/behaviour that should have been completely out of character.
That said, it is a pretty decent spy/mafia thriller (which is not really my cup of tea) and a relatively fast read, so it can serve perfectly as a palate cleanser.
It also did take me some time to figure out the big bad - I did not guess before we were given the obvious hint - being shown an action/behaviour that should have been completely out of character.

WOW!! BORING BORING BOOK!
This started out very interesting. The storyline was pretty good, but quickly collapsed into a too long drawn out descriptions of English country side. Incomplete sentences or information. The storyline felt like the author assumes that you knew the characters. It took me about a month to complete. Boring! Thank you!🤔🤔😐

Very clever
This story is remarkable. A terrific tale with wonderful characters. It is quite complicated with many twists and turns. Inspector Elk is an amazing policeman. I was totally shocked by the ending. It is a compelling read. I cant wait for more of this author. Lots of typos.

Eine gutes Buch mit einem klar strukturierten Handlungsablauf, dem klar und einfach zu folgen ist. Es wird zwar nicht sonderlich viel über die Hauptpersonen erzählt, trotzdem kann man sich ein doch Recht klares Bild von ihnen machen. Gefallen tut mir hier auch der für Edgar Wallace typische Schreibstil.

3.5⭐️ I read this for a reading challenge in which I needed a book from 1925. Having already enjoyed The Great Gatsby, I discovered this book. It’s a fun little read with a good story that’s well thought out.
