Original Sin is a really entertaining read. There are 25 short stories in all. Reading them felt a bit like going through a time capsule of snapshots. These brief stories are about ordinary happenings spread over a period of many years that are made interesting in the way they have been told. Stories of mischief, happiness, discovery, sadness, acceptance, gifts, nostalgia, loss, delight etc. My favorite story was 'The Secret'. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a great book to pick up when you stop for a cuppa and you can get a story finished before you are finished your drink.
I don't think I've ever read a complete collection of short stories by one author, but I've enjoyed reading every story in 'Original Sin'. Tony Chapelle is a multiple award-winning short story writer from Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Chapelle's settings are small, often restricted to the indoors (sheds, kitchens) and his characters' relationships are primarily domestic (families, husband/wife, father/daughter). But the characters are so well-drawn and realistic, they resonated with me, whether it was his teenagers or his middle aged-men. Perhaps this says more about me than Chapelle's writing, but there is an awkwardness about his characters that creates a discomfort but a reassurance at the same time. He's a fine story-teller.
