She gazed pensively into the oval sheet of leaden water slumbering at her feet, at the passing clouds, casting their ever-changing shadows on the little villa, on the deserted garden, the trees of the opposite bank, the distant fields, on the bridge to the left, and on the quiet roads, which lost themselves behind the Beguinage, and on the slanting roofs of Bruges, grand, mysterious, dead.

About the author

Fogazzaro was born in Vicenza to a rich family.

In 1864 he got a law degree in Turin. In Milan he followed the scapigliatura movement.

In 1869 he was back in Vicenza to work as lawyer, but he left this path very soon to write books full time.

In his works one finds a constant conflict between sense of duty and passions, faith and reason. In some cases this brings the tormented soul of characters into mystic experiences. Arguably his masterpiece was Piccolo Mondo Antico (variously titled in English translations as The Patriot or as Little World of the Past). This well written novel is set in his beloved Valsolda on Lake Lugano, Italy, in the 1850s. It has delightful evocations of the landscape, and strong characterizations which reveal the inner psychological conflicts of the characters.

Fogazzaro was a deeply religious man but supported reform in the Catholic Church and toured Italy proposing to reconcile Darwin's theory of evolution with Christianity. He found new interpretations in positivist and evolutionist theories, but because of this in 1905 the Roman Catholic Church banned the novels Il santo and Leila. He died six years later in his birthplace, Vicenza.

Romanzo che da tempo volevo leggere e che ha soddisfatto in pieno ogni mia aspettativa. La storia di Piero Maironi, alias Benedetto, considerato Santo da molti, osteggiato, invece, da una nutrita folla di miscredenti e detrattori, pone il nostro sguardo a contemplare una figura che, in fin dei conti, nel bene, come nel male, si pone a combattere per l'ideale in cui crede e non esita a conformarvi la propria stessa vita. Una storia di fede e di coerenza, di struggimento, di cadute e ascese. Una vita alla ricerca della verità. Un monito a viver la propria fede (non per forza solo quella religiosa), in maniera matura, intima, intensa, sincera e non ritualistica. Un monito a cercare la propria spiritualità ben oltre le grette promesse di un mondo materialista, cinico, freddo, arrivista.

terzo libro della serie, stavolta in un'edizione 1910, col timbro della biblioteca di mio nonno.
Il Santo ( così lo chiamano) è sempre i protagonista, che poi sarebbe il fratellino minore dell'Ombretta sdegnosa che tutti conoscono.. dopo la conversione al capezzale della moglie pazza che però morendo ritrova il senno, vaga fra abbazie, paesini, e poi Roma. Mistico, visionario, riformatore, non si è inserito nel clero né regolare né secolare, per cui se qualcuno lo chiama il santo, la gerarchia ufficiale ne diffida. Abbiamo la tensione fra i riformatori cattolici e i conservatori, siamo alla fine del secolo, è passato il vaticano I, dogmatico, e Fogazzaro non può prevedere Giovanni XXIII e il vaticano II. Alcune delle discussioni sono tuttora presenti nel mondo di un secolo dopo.
La sua innamorata continua a corrergli dietro, ma alla fine capirà che non c'è nulla d a fare se non adeguarsi al suo rigore, e la sua amica protestante si convertirà al cattolicesimo, mentre il fratello rimarrà mangiapreti imperterrito . Alla fine, tanto per cambiare, il protagonista muore giovane, di una malattia non meglio identificata.. ma non avrebbe potuto finire altrimenti. In questo romanzo non ci sono dialoghi dialettali.

Fascinating look at the mid-nineteeth century world of Catholicism. The issues of the 1850's are largely today's issues: the battle between the modernists versus the non-concessionists of then and the emphasis of Pope Francis (begun largely during John XXIIIrd's reign) on helping the common man versus the maintaining of religious dogma.

I don't know if the occasional change to the present tense seemingly in the middle of a description was a function of the translation from Italian or not.

Certainly the change from a definite pronoun such as 'he' to a descriptive one such as 'the speaker' suggests this was a style of the author. Perhaps this was common in the writing of 1906?

I liked to imagine being in such a beautifully described setting where the main sounds were a noisy river, the rustling of a garment, footsteps, the wind through the trees. No lawnmowers, truck motors, car motors, air conditioner motors, leafblowers, construction equipment...

Jedna od rijetkih knjiga koje nisam pročitao jer je užasna. Nikako mi ne sjeda. Objektivno loše pripovijedanje i tematika. Možda ima nešto preko 50. stranice što bi joj popravilo ugled i svakako poruka ne mora biti nužno loša, ali totalno ne uspijeva u ničemu osim u dosađivanju čitatelju.

Dal punto di vista letterario non è un capolavoro, ma nel pensiero molto interessante.

La santità in cosa consiste? Consiste in una vita eroica o no? Dipende dall’uso che si fa della propria vita e dall’umiltà che è alla base della fede. Maironi cerca Dio, cerca una Chiesa più pura
