Dear Mr. Prince, Do not put a photo of yourself on the cover of your book. It will make me not like you. Even if I opened the book and candy and $100 bills fell out I would still think "What a douche"
Sincerely, Christy Leigh Stewart
Ps. You know what? I have my pride. I don't need your hand outs. Take the candy back.
My actual review:
I love religious nonfiction but this isn't the type I usually read so I'm going to put aside what my reaction to the book was (bordem) and judge it on what the book is actually meant to be.
It is a self-affirmation book for those of Evangelical faith to boost faith and self-esteem...And it's good at what it does! Prince keeps close to the true principles of Christianity and reinforces everything with scriptural quotes without just photo copying the Bible itself. In case you don't know, that is hard to come by in this genre.
This book is for the relatively new hip-Christian momvment. You know, the WWJD and Jesus Is My Homeboy sort. I am whole heartedly against this movement as a Christian myself, but if something works for you it's all right with me.
Still, if the Bible was based in present day, the money-lender scene would take place at an Evangelical church's Starbucks and Jesus would be throwing the baristas out on their ear after refusing to call a small drink a "tall"
The strange art of writing that does not forgive you if you are not inspired. The "Unmerited Favour" book by Joseph Prince is in my view one of the best books EVER written. Joseph was deeply inspired by God whilst writing it. And this is a precious moment for me, praying that God uses me once more to review this masterpiece.
Eyes that are opened by the word “Grace” or unmerited favour as the title already suggests. This book could not have started with a better beginning but showing the life of Joseph, son of Jacob in the book of Genesis in the Bible. For sure you and I have already read his story a couple of times. However, the way that Prince outlines and describes it so richly unlocks what it was really like to be sold as a slave.
In order to remind us a bit what the story of Joseph covers, bear with me in this summary: Joseph had 11 brothers and they envied him because he had the ability to interpret dreams and his dreams revealed that his brothers (and even his father) would bow down to him one day. Fact that would leave any sibling at least concerned. Jacob, his father, loved him more than the others because Joseph was born to him in his old age (Genesis 37:3). I feel like laughing: loved more and with a great gift of interpretation. After having been sold by his brothers to the Egyptians, his story starts with ups and downs.
Yet, it is not the ups and downs that interest me right now (not for a while). Could you please try to conjure up the idea of a slave? I do believe Joseph Prince was very “vivid” and do not bother trying to create any image. Let me provide you with the exactly words from the book: “... a young man of about 17 years old, his neck and his hands bound firmly with coarse ropes... he is in a foreign land where the people speak in an incomprehensible tongue. With nothing to his name, not even a loincloth to cover his modesty, he is bound and displayed, completely naked. In a short while, he would be inspected like an animal against his will, and sold into a lifetime of slavery... And yet, God Himself calls this young man, named Joseph, a successful man!” (pp. 1-2)
Oh my gosh... If “translated” into nowadays I reckon it would have been something like: being sold to a country where they speak no English/Portuguese (my mother tongue), with nothing, no money, no mobile phone, no flight tickets, no internet, no GPS, NO “NOTHING”! How could a man, who had nothing, have become successful? The simple answer is... by GRACE... By the unmerited favour of God that lies in his life. God can transform a slave into a person of influence and it was exactly what happened to Joseph (due to the fact that Joseph had interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams he was made in charge of the whole land of Egypt).
I keep on thinking on how Joseph had nothing. Wherever we go nowadays we can easily check a person’s data with the use of internet. Nevertheless, Joseph had nothing but GOD... NOTHING BUT GOD... It is when we realize that God is ALL we need. His grace is all we need. And Joseph believed in God. Joseph believed in His creator. Joseph succeeded and God is with you too, He also wants you to succeed, to make you prosper because His grace is enough for you. Everything Joseph touched was blessed and it is the same with you. The author even emphasises that as Jesus is so are you. He cites the following verses:
2 Corinthians 3:18 16-18Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We're free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him. (The Message Version)
However, to be under His Grace, once again we see that it is not a matter of how much we do and achieve. We are used to living under the rules of the world: “do good, get good, do bad, get beat”! This is not the case of Grace. Grace is free. It is not according to what YOU have done but in accordance with what JESUS DID on the cross, dying for you. It is not through YOUR MERIT, it is an unmerited favor that God decided to grant you. How? Just by believing… just believing. This is a positive message for the ones who think that are NOT good enough to come to God. IT IS NOT THROUGH YOUR ACTIONS, IT IS THROUGH JESUS’ ACTION AND ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TO BELIEVE.
Joseph Prince always emphasizes in his books about the fact that “right believing leads to right living”. Stop believing that you do not deserve. Actually, it is true that you do not deserve but God does not act according to your merit. It is according to His benevolence. After reading this book I am feeling “lighter” and focusing on my thoughts. I have to change my thoughts of condemnation to God’s thoughts of Grace and repeat to myself that I much loved by God and I am the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ. Amen for all these books that talk about Grace and preach the gospel of Jesus: by Grace you are saved through FAITH, believing in what Jesus did for you on that cross. A LOUD “AMEN” FOR THAT! Larissa Fauber :)
We NOW live under the covenant of grace and no longer under the covenant of the law. Grace is unmerited favor, unearned and undeserved. Anything away from it is NEVER GRACE at all. GRACE is not a doctrine, a teaching, a thing. It's a PERSON that is JESUS.
"Father God, I thank You that in your great love plan, You want me blessed in every area of my life. Your heart's desire, according to 3 John 1:2, is for me to prosper and be in health even as my soul prospers. I thank You that my children, marriage, career and ministry will all be blessed with the blessing of Abraham. I know that it comes because it's Your promise and not because of my efforts or works. So Father, in Jesus' name, deliver me from performance-oriented Christianity and give me Your grace to be established in the righteousness of faith. I confess before You that I am the righteousness of God in Christ. Therefore, every blessing that belongs to the righteous is mine. This is my call. This is my destiny. The devil is under my feet. I am above the evil one because I am in Christ, who is my righteousness. I have everlasting righteousness. I am not righteous today or unrighteous tomorrow. I am righteous forever. The Holy Spirit dwells in me to show me how righteous You have made me. In Jesus' name, I declare that I shall reign in life and be an heir of the world. Amen! (Joseph Prince, Unmerited Favor, Page 257-258)
This is the first time I have read anything by this author, but I have seen him briefly ministering on television. I have two of his books on my bookshelf, this book and another book called Destined to Reign.
This book is about God's unmerited favor in your life. The author preaches from the Word of God that we don't have to do anything to earn this unmerited favor, we don't have to work or strive for it. It is ours because of the finished work of Christ on the cross. He teaches that we are "the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus" (See 2 Corinthians 5:21). All we need to do is believe it. When we do, the unmerited grace of God will be upon our lives and cause us to be successful in all that we do. We will have the favor of God and man. He does point out that not all men will give you favor because just as Jesus was persecuted, you will be also. Sometimes, when people see the unmerited favor of God on your life, they will become jealous.
There were two things that bothered me in this book however, in Chapter 13, he teaches that as believers, we are not required to confess our sins, that our sins have already been paid in full at the cross and that by being sin conscious, we are actually enslaving ourselves. I agree that all our sins have been paid on the cross, but I still think we should acknowledge them to God and if we have offended others. I could be wrong and he may have greater faith in this area. Also, on page 172 he says the following:
"The context of Galatians 6:7-8 is about sowing money. It has nothing to do with sowing sin..."
I am pretty sure he is wrong on this point because these verses are clearly talking about sowing to the flesh and sowing to the Spirit. I don't know how he came to the conclusion that these verses are only about money. I think they can be applied to money, but that is not their only context.
Otherwise, I found what he wrote biblically sound and I especially like the final chapter in which he shares the revelation that all believers are "beloved" of God and how the enemy often tries to take this identity of being "beloved" away from us. We need to personalize this for ourselves and know that we are BELOVED, GREATLY BLESSED, RIGHTEOUS and HIGHLY FAVORED.
It didn't seem possible but Pastor Prince has written an even better book than Destined to Reign. He explains the goodness of God in such a way that you long to please God out of love for Him instead of fearful dread of Him.
AWESOME! This is a new perspective on success that I had never considered before. Really challenged the way I have viewed my identity in Christ! Gives a fresh understanding of GRACE being lived out in everyday life.
Awesome book for anyone wanting to walk in the full favor the Lord has given us. Powerful message and principles that you can start applying immediately.
LOVED this book - so uplifting - when we discover the grace and mercy that Jesus bore us when he died on the cross will change your outlook in life. You have peace, are loved, and have blessings IN Him. Prince lays this out in a very easy-to-read manner. Why didn't I read this sooner?
Truly a book centered on the Word of God and uplifting the Spirit. I constantly try to measure up and always find myself coming short, but this book reminded me that Jesus’ unmerited favour on my life is bigger than my sin. To continue focusing on my sin would negate His work in my life. Hallelujah and thank you Pastor Prince for sharing the word of God and the freedom of salvation with us.
From the preacher of grace, the author argue that we could be successful on every aspect by depending on grace (unmerited favor). Here the author peeled out one by one what is this means in the old testament and also new testament.
There is such excellent, word-based truths in this book. It is most assuredly a book that is profitable for every true believer to have in their collection and reference often. By citing scriptures to study and meditate on, this book helps believers to further understand their standing with their Father through His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. This book further lays out truths and exercies, backed up eith the Word, that will aid believers in a closer walk with God. I cannot recommend it hihhly enough!
Great spiritual growth book for Christians. Clear understanding of the gospels and what God had done and wants from us. If you're wondering what God's will is and what you should be doing to please God, read this book! Most churches don't tell you what's in this book. It cleared up some misunderstandings I had and other things I couldn't comprehend even though I have read the Bible many times.
Helped me gain a greater understanding of God's word... eye opening, enlightening... how ever you want to put it. It totally transformed the Word of God for me and opened up a new level of understanding in God's grace.
