Maryse Laflamme is your go-to gal for mysteries, romance, and compelling memoirs. A globe-trotter at heart, her journeys infuse her stories with rich flavors.

In an extraordinary twist of fate, Maryse defied expectations by continuing to thrive way past her “dead-by” date from an incurable cancer.

She lives on Planet Earth (like most of her readers, go figure!) near her family, and graciously shares her head space with the vibrant characters from her books. Together, they relish traveling, throwing, or attending dinner parties, yoga, meditation, and diving deep into quirky philosophical conversations, as well as going deep into the quantum (don't ask).

I loved this book! I know that may sound strange to some. . .how can a book about "cancer" be a good read? You don't have to have cancer to enjoy this book and learn from it. This book is about one woman's quest to heal from a devastating type of cancer. Maryse let's us in as she navigates both western and alternative treatments. . . and that is NO easy feat!

Maryse didn't blindly trust western medicine, nor did she carelessly follow the latest trend or guru, promising her a cure if she had this supplement, or that treatment. . .Maryse tenaciously studied science, read study after study, researching, researching and then some more researching. . .Maryse found her own hybrid treatment that combined both western and alternative approaches.

As we know, our physical and emotional health are intertwined . . .we can't have one without the other. Both need to be working in unison for optimal health. Maryse took this concept and ran with it. She explains it so much better than I ever could but what I really want to express is how deeply moved I was in reading Maryse's story. I found myself both laughing and crying, sometimes both within the same paragraph! Her courage, honesty, love of learning, humor, and hope moved me beyond words.

While I don't have cancer, I have already instilled some very healthy practices into my regular life. For one thing, I'm listening to my body rather than ignoring it. For the last couple of years, my PCP said I had some minor irregularities on my EKG ("nothing to worry about but at some point you may want to see a cardiologist") Ummm, why have I dismissed this for the past two years? I finally did see the cardiologist and after a series of tests, so far so good. But there are other things, like my weight problem, borderline high blood pressure, etc I'm no longer going to passively sit by and "wait and see," before I take my health in my own hands. Most importantly, I'm taking more time for "me" and less time doing things I don't want to do. . .And I'm finally going to plan that trip to Europe!! Afterall, Who the F*ck Says We Have Tomorrow?

Maryse has another book out, called "Crooked Straight." It's a memoir of Maryse’s earlier years and very different from this book. I loved that one as well !!!

This is such a real, raw and encouraging book about having and overcoming big, scary health issues. While I haven't had cancer, I have experienced other health issues that had me asking myself some of the same questions Maryse asked herself, especially "how/why did this happen to me when I've been a health nut for years?!" I loved her take on it all and her writing style. I felt like I was in her head and along for the ride which, while tragic, was also very empowering. She proves that it is possible to overcome seemingly impossible things.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
