From back of book: "Bedtime is a special time and this beautiful book will be a special part of saying good night. Parents and children alike will adore this story of a mother and father bunny who go to great lengths to convince their child it's time to go to bed. As children turn the pages, a little bit of the sun goes away and a little piece of the sleepy moon appears - ready to send young ones to sleep night after night."
Good Night Sun, Hello Moon is a children’s book that deals with the daily process of day changing into night and along with that bedtime for main character in the story Little Bunny. The story is written by Karen Viola and is a Reader’s Digest Children’s Book sold in hardcover. The book is a flip style format which shows the sun slowly changing into the moon as each page is turned.
The illustrator Chi Chung uses magic realism and sets the story in a sunny meadow that is full of different shades of green grass and flowers in many hues and types. The story begins as a party in the meadow ends and Mother and Lil Rabbit make their way home because it’s time for the day to end and all bunnies to go to bed. As is the case with a lot of youngsters Lil Bunny does not want to go to bed and tries to find reasons to stay awake on his way home that include watching the sky change colors, watching for shapes in the clouds, playing with fireflies, and asking questions as to why the sun and moon change places every night. The sky changes with every turn of a page and you slowly see the beautiful sunset transformed into a starry night full of fireflies as Little Bunny walks home with Mother Bunny and meet Father Bunny who is also on his way home to bed. By the time they reach home the moon is out and Lil Bunny tries one last time to stay up by counting stars but realizes he is much too tired so he asks the moon if he can finish counting for him as he drifts off to sleep so he can be ready for a new day. The illustrations add so much beautiful bright, vivid colors and detail to the story.
The author writes in language that is easy to understand and that is common for young children. The story is based on conversations between the three characters as to why sleep is important and signs associated with it being time to sleep. The phrase good night is repeated many times in the story and a very soft and soothing writing style is used. Lil Bunny has very good manners and politely comes up with reasons to try stay awake till he finds himself falling asleep.
I liked the book and it is one that caught my eye with its bright colors, hard cover with a circle cut out showing a sun that has texture from the flip book design. In a library this book would appeal to young readers and could be used as a fun introduction as to why day changes into night. When I showed the book to my 3 year old granddaughter her eyes lit up and she wanted me to read the book to her, so this was the last selling point for me. This is a book I can see becoming a routine part of the going to bed process for many young children and parents.
This is a beautiful book. The board pages are cut so that each reveals the next. The first page is of the sun and each succeeding page moves the story and the picture through sunset to the moon at night. Flip the book over and the moon slowly gives way to dawn and sunrise. Its a board book, meant for little ones, but I bought one for myself its so beautiful.
I read this to the kids at nap time sometimes. It's just a book my director has that she likes for nap time. I don't think it's that great, though. The bunny uses common stalling tactics that I would like to urge against. The book itself has a little gimmick, where the pages are different sizes, but that doesn't matter at nap time. It's not really my thing.
Dear Readers: What a lovely blurb! How often do parents try to coach their child/children to bed of a night? Presenting this in a novel way through a bunny is so sweet, playful even. You must read it!
I love the format of this book, the wonderfully cut pages that change sun from moon as the story goes along. Unfortunately, the words and story leave much to be desired. The writing is just not for me.
Amazing book for encouraging two-year olds to go to bed!! When my 1-2 year old sees the bunny tucked into bed at the end of the book, he'll walk over to his crib so he can be tucked in too. Magic!!
