The title of this book should really be changed to 'Ink Bloom: Draw and Paint a Sci-Fi Adventure'. Though the techniques discussed would work equally well for either genre, I guess.

The authors do a pretty good job of introducing the different media you can use as well as the basic priciples of composition, perspective. There are several useful techniques on how to paint glows, electricity, fur, metals and other tricky bits like those. The authors use an interesting mixed-media approach involving watercolors, acrylic and oils for almost every illustration featured, which is worth taking a look at.

I have never been overly fond of step-by-step books for imaginative art because following along almost always means copying, which is unnecessarily time-consuming. (Note: Most of my books are borrowed from the library, hence I can never get through as many projects as I'd like and end up skimming through for useful tips and techniques.)
