Bernadette (Bernie) and her friends Shelley and Nichole are training as junior volunteers at busy Mercy Hospital and are facing one crisis after another. Shelley is working wonders with a sick little boy in Pediatrics, but she may have to leave Mercy to take a paying job. Bernie loves working as a volunteer, but it may cost her the friendship of a very special boy. And Nichole may not even make it through training—she tells everyone that she hates all the rules to being a volunteer and that she can't stand being around sick people. But Bernie knows her real problem: fear. Nichole is afraid she doesn't have what it takes to help people…until she encounters her first one-on-one experience with a difficult patient and finds out how much of a difference a good volunteer can make.
