A second birthday celebration recounts the pregnancy, delivery, and raising of the Dilley sextuplets and describes the Dilley's bustling daily challenges of schedules, budgets, and love. 50,000 first printing.
This is an older book and i read it when it first came out. The Dilley's are the first ever to give birth to 6 healthy babies. They are the pioneer's of multiple births before the big trend of Multiples started in the U.S. Long before the McCaughy Septuplets or the Gosselins (John&Kate+8 on the TLC channel) the Dilley's were thrust into the spotlight for their large family. I like that the Dilley's are so down to earth and realistic about life with 6 babies at once. These kids are teenagers now, but back then Kevin Dilley was stay at home dad who did the majority of the childraising without the help of nannies or volunteers. Becky Dilley talks about how it wasn't easy to be so easily recognized in public or having strangers want to hold/touch the babies or the negative comments about having so many children at once. A very good read!
04/09: I so enjoy this book. I read it years ago. It was looking for this book again that brought me to all the other interesting books on multiples I've recently read. On May 25, 1993, Becki Dilley gave birth to the only sextuplets (to date) to survive birth. I have to chuckle when I read that Becki is dreading June 25, 2009, when all six of her children get their driver's licenses. My favorite passage in the book is Keith describing how, fed up with watching the kids flip their cereal bowls, he began emptying a box of dry cereal onto the playroom floor and watching the kids dine like pigeons. It helps that he loves to vacuum. It's a fun read.
I found this book at a Goodwill. I was very surprised to learn about this family. I had already heard the story of Jon and Kate but this family the first family of sextuplets was right here in Indiana! At times this book could be a little slow but if I had to suggest this or Kate's first book and I feel like this book was much more real and not so preachy.
A one evening read when I didn't even have the energy to read a novel. I started out interested in the infertility stuff and then read the rest because it was just strange and... wow.
A well written book and inspiring book. I breezed right through it and enjoyed it very much. I loved the parenting tips at the end. Best wishes to this extraordinary family.
