This book is about a little bear who is bored on a lovely sunny day so is happy when Katie walks pasta and invites him for a day in the park. The two spend a fun day in the park together before going to Katie’s House for lunch honey sandwiches, bananas, yoghurt and juice. Tired and ready to go home Katie takes Smallest Bear back to the zoo and promises to come back and take him to the park again one day. This book is deceptive in that it appears at first glance to be a short and simple storey about a nice day out for two friends. However it is a great book to familiarise children with preposition and to an extent time. I think this book is ideally suited to Reception and Year 1, read to the class as a whole and possible leaving pausing before the preposition and asking the children to decide what word would come next before continuing with the storey. As with the general plot of the storey, the illustrations are quite plain focusing on colour and shape rather than detail, but I feel this suitably reflects the storey. I do feel that this book is very useful to younger children and is perhaps a little overlooked because of its simplicity.

One of my favourite childhood reads. An enchanting story about Katie's adventures with a bear which is suitable for very young children.
