Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Bear went on to star in Discovery Channel's Emmy nominated Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor TV series, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet. Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over £2.5million for children around the world. In recognition of his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to 28 million Scouts worldwide, awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy, and has authored 10 books, including To My Sons.
Did not know that the famous TV celebrity had written a series of juvenile fiction, but am not entirely surprised as it seems in line with his persona and character. Bear uses the setting in each of these as the back drop to lessons in survival skills, which his characters (protagonist Beck Granger!) demonstrate. As one who has seen him on TV I could picture the author doing these things for real - most of them anyway.
As with this genre, the fonts are large and line spacing generous to make it easy on the eye and a quick read. Chapters are short and easily digestible, with a quick pace as befits an adventure story. I saw that he has written a book for each kind of environment (desert, arctic, mountains, jungle etc.) and this one contained both tropical jungle and survival along tropical beaches/islands as well, which was an additional bonus. Short of writing a survival handbook, this is a great way to learn about such tips, with a story thrown into it.
When they were going in the bus they saw an orangutan it had it's baby. hey! monkey! over here! one of the tourists called the orangutan looked at him and went in the way they also saw huts. Beck was struck by the variety of expressions. Orangutan could laugh they bared their teeth and their shoulders shook. Orangutans seemed to contain the wisdom of the universe. Right now they were practically on the flanks of a big volcano .Any where else would be probably be safer at the moment. Boom! The explosion felt like red hot needles stabling into their eardrums without warning. The lava was flowing back of vehicle slowly. It was getting on for four in the afternoon. 5'o clock we will stop and search for food. they made a compass naturally. This book was astonishing.
This book is about a 14-year-old boy called Beck Granger, and his best friend Peter Grey. They get forced to travel through the heart of the Indonesian Jungle after a volcano erupts in their path. My favourite part was when they found the old volcanic pool. It gives a sense of beauty amongst the raw tarantulas and roasted lizard tails. My favourite character is Beck Granger, because he knows a lot about surviving in the wild. He also makes pretty good jokes. I learned that sea urchin spines are comprised mostly of calcium, so if they get in you, you just break the part that sticks out, and the rest should just dissolve. Absolutely amazing; just my kind of book. So good, in fact, that I finished it in one day.
This book fits into the survival category.I decided to read it because i enjoy reading book that are about survival or escaping and i am a big bear grylles fan. I liked it because the author sets the scene very well in my head and he used amazing describing words. I would reccomend this book to 13 year olds and under. :)
Bought this second-hand from the library because I had read the first three. I have to say I liked this one the most, because it had less down-time with the perfect combination of humour, actual survival tips, action and tension. Very good and highly recommended.
Brilliant book, incredible adventure. This book has awesome description and detail. I really like this book and I am so going to reading the rest of the series.
