Zaśpiewajmy wszyscy gromkim głosem:

Najwyraźniej jestem za głupia na 80% przedstawionych tutaj treści. Pozostałe, jakkolwiek intrygujące, prawdopodobnie w niedługim czasie wywietrzeją z mojej łepetyny.
Nie zrozumcie mnie źle, naukowe podwaliny są spoko. Wspaniale, że dzięki nim autor znajduje wytłumaczenie dla dziesiątek procesów, które w oczach prostego pochłaniacza węglowodanów zachodzą "bo tak". Żałuję jednak okrutnie wszystkich tych fragmentów, które pochłaniałam z wypiekami na twarzy i prawdziwą przyjemnością (chciałam przytoczyć w tym miejscu chociażby przykład rozdziału poświęconego seksualności, ale będzie to miało dziwny wydźwięk... urywki o medycynie i narkotykach też były super!). Żałuję, że na jeden tego typu fragment przypadało kolejnych 200000 linijek kipiących "synapsami", "hipokampami" i innymi "neuroprzekaźnikami". Systematyczne dygresje autora wcale nie pomagają.
Domagam się wersji demo dla laików.

„Misterium życia zwierząt” w przystępny i interesujący dla dorosłego czytelnika sposób pokazuje inną stronę otaczającego nas świata przyrody. To już nie tylko trendy, nowinki, nie tylko zabawne ciekawostki, czy anegdotki, ale konkretna wiedza dla wielbicieli tematu, którzy pragną wejść nieco głębiej i intensywniej w zwierzęcą rzeczywistość. A cel Karstena Brensinga jest jeden:
„Ta książka nie wstrząśnie więc tronem, na którym zasiada człowiek, sprawi jednak, że już nigdy nie będziecie mieli poczucia, że jesteście na świecie tylko wy i inni ludzie, ale będziecie go dzielić z innymi czującymi i świadomymi swojego istnienia istotami.”

In den Buch "Das Mysterium der Tiere" schreibt der Meeresbiologe und Verhaltensforscher Karsten Brensing über das, wie der Name bereits sagt, Mysterium der Tiere. Dabei geht er auf alle möglichen Themen ein - von Kultur über Gemeinschaft bis hin zu den Gefühlen.
Dies bringt mich auch schon zu meinem Kritikpunkt des Buches. In dem Buch wurden extrem viele Themen behandelt und dementsprechend wurde auch wahnsinnig viel Information vermittelt. Leider etwas zu viel. Bitte nicht falsch verstehen, ich fand jede einzelne Information wahnsinnig interessant, jedoch konnte ich mir nur sehr sehr wenig davon merken, da ich einfach überflutet wurde.
Was man jedoch sagen muss ist, dass die Information sehr locker und verständlich rüber gebracht wird. Dies liegt zum einen an dem lockeren Schreibstil, der eigentlich gar nicht an ein Sachbuch erinnert. Zum anderen liegt es daran, dass Karsten Brensing viele Informationen sehr vereinfacht hat, um sie auch für Laien verständlich zu machen. Für haben diese zwei Punkte das Lesen deutlich angenehmer gemacht - um ehrlich zu sein war ich von dem Buch richtig gefesselt und konnte es fast nicht mehr aus der Hand legen!
In dem Buch gibt es viele Farbabbildungen das Geschriebene gut ergänzen. Diese Bilden hatten jeweils eine Bildunterschrift, die genau erklärte was man auf dem Bild sieht.
Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, dass ich dieses Buch liebe! Es zeigt wunderschön auf, dass auch Tiere komplexe Lebensweisen und Gefühle besitzen. Für mich ist das eine sehr wichtige Nachricht die weiter verbreitet werden sollte um den Tierschutz noch weiter voranzutreiben und ein Bewusstsein für die Lebenswelt der Tiere zu schaffen. Wie oben bereits erwähnt, ist mein einziger Kritikpunkt dass es zu viel Informationen gegeben hat, weshalb ich das Buch auf jeden Fall nocheinmal lesen werde, um mehr darauf mitzunehmen.
Ansonsten kann ich das Buch nur jedem ans Herz legen!

You might wonder why I've given this book, chock-full of new information, such a low review. The fact is that Brensing is pedantic, and brings an obviously unedited manuscript to the public. His take on things from the perspective of a militant vegetarian (or vegan) and agnostic (if not atheist) combine to repulse, and deadens the impact of what could otherwise be a fantastic text that would've otherwise been destined to replace more staid and outmoded false information. The man simply cannot QUIT editorializing and putting forth his views intermingled with the new information. Often he presents as facts, things which have yet to be conclusively demonstrated. He could've easily cut the page count by almost a hundred pages, without leaving a single theory, incident, experiment, or fact out. Which is why I've given this such a low score, and why I fervently hope for the sake of current and future students of animal cognition, that I do not see this offered in any curriculum. Read this book, sure - but be wary of this man's opinions masquerading as facts, and of his dry-as-dust, overly grandiloquent writing style. (yes, I did that intentionally).

Eine gute und auch wichtige Lektüre, wenn ich es auch auf den Ohren hatte. An "Die Sprache der Tiere" vom gleichen Autor kam es für mich allerdings nicht ganz heran.

Kui muidu on kogu selle kuu lugemine tulnud koduriiulilt või ootel lugemisnimekirjast, siis selle raamatu puhul tegin erandi, sest tundus lihtsalt nii huvitav. Muidugi olen ma alati arvanud, et loomad on targad, kindlasti targemad, kui looduse kroon oma "tarkuses" üldse ette kujutada oskab. Võtame kas või sipelgad või mesilased. Milline hämmastav maailmakorraldus neil on!
Raamatu autor on saksa merebioloog ja seetõttu räägitakse teoses palju näiteks delfiinidest ja vaaladest. Muu hulgas saab teada, et tegelikult ei tunne delfiinid inimestega koos ujumise suhtes mingit vaimustust ja et otse pole mõtet delfiinide suunas ujuma hakata, sest seda võtavad nad rünnakuna.
Raamat algab muidugi sellega, mis müüb ehk seksiga. Loomulikult tahaks nüüd kohe väita, et see ongi ju loomariigis peamine ja loomad ühtivadki vaid elu edasikandmise eesmärgil. Tuleb aga välja, et tegelikult võivad mõned isendid seda kõike samamoodi nautida kui homo sapienski. Kui sa just isamesilane ei ole muidugi. Ja matriarhaat on ka loomade maailmas tavalisem kui arvatagi oskaks. Edaspidistest peatükkidest saame teada näiteks seda, et stressis kala tuleks rahustada silitamisega (muudan vist tänase lõunasöögi plaane) või et limaseenelgi on inimesega midagi ühist.
Tegelikult oli tore raamat, kenasti lihtsalt kirjutatud, palju näiteid ja viiteid ja võrdlusi inimloomaga. Mllegipärast aga ei edenenud mul selle lugemine kuidagi. Ei tahaks seda ka e-raamatuna lugemise süüks ajada. Midagi justkui häiris autori stiilis, võib-olla liigne familiaarsus. Kirjavigadest ja tõlke lokaliseerimisest ma parem ei räägi (need olid küll vaid üksikud kohad, mitte massiliselt). Ja vaatamata arvukatele teaduskatsetele (mida küll inimesed sageli enda vaatevinklist tegema kipuvad) jäävad loomad endiselt mõistatuseks. Võib-olla aga aitab selle raamatu lugemine ehk natukenegi paremini mõista, et tegemist ei ole tummade lojustega, vaid tunnetega olenditega.

Not without its flaws - repetitions, constant referring back and forth to other chapters (yes, I remember I read about this thing in chapter X, it was literally 10 pages ago, oh my god), some gaps in knowledge (clearly there are studies on species that he overlooked in favour of dolphins) - but all in all the book provides good food for thought, with up-to-date info and the right message.
Be prepared to read a lot about dolphins and other marine mammals, though. I understand, of course, as the author studied them for his PhD. So even when the chapters are not about dolphins, Brensing makes sure to at least mention them. By no means do I hold it against him, I'd gladly read a whole book on dolphins if he should choose to write one.
That being said, I don't get why there are bears on the covers (of all available editions), and not, well, dolphins. Just as a side note.

Das Buch ist eher für Menschen gedacht, die denken, dass Tiere nichts sind und nichts können. Ich fürchte nur, dass genau die natürlich so ein Buch nicht lesen. Mich hat quasi nichts in diesem Buch überrascht, im Gegenteil habe ich mich oft geärgert, was den Tieren alles abgesprochen wird. Wann fangen Menschen endlich an, Tiere wirklich zu respektieren und als gleichwertig anzusehen?

Kiedy ostatnim razem sięgnęłam po książkę o zwierzętach, to bardzo boleśnie zderzyłam się ze ścianą. „Nieznane więzi natury” Petera Wohllebena okazały się nieporozumieniem, a ja im dłużej myślę o tej książce, tym utwierdzam się we wniosku, że byłam dla niej zbyt delikatna w ocenie i gdybym omawiała ją dzisiaj, to zabawiłabym się w hejtera nie z tej ziemi. Dlatego „Misterium życia zwierząt” czekało ciężkie zadanie obłaskawienia niedźwiedzia literackiego bulwersu, jaki we mnie rozsierdzony ryczał. Czy podołało?
Tak. Pierwsze, co rzuciło mi się w oczy, gdy sięgnęłam po tę książkę, to przypisy. Trzydzieści stron zapisanych drobnym maczkiem jest poświęconych na odsyłanie do nagrań, badań, artykułów i opracowań. Mogłam, więc na starcie odetchnąć z ulgą, że tym razem autor zabrał się do pisania z większą ilością profesjonalizmu i nawet, jeżeli coś nie będzie mi pasować, to mimo tego tekst, jako taki będzie minimum poprawny.
Czy jest poprawny? Jest więcej niż poprawny. W środku „Misterium życia zwierząt” znajdziecie wiele tematów i jeszcze więcej przykładów i nawiązań do przeprowadzanych badań i eksperymentów na ich temat. Są między innymi rozdziały poświęcone mowie, osobowości, kultowi zmarłych, żałobie, zabawie i wiele innych.
Autor pisze językiem prostym, zrozumiałym dla przeciętnego odbiorcy. Na karty książki przelewa nie tylko wiedzę samą w sobie, ale okrasza ją również dawką poczucia humoru. Stonowanego – w końcu to nie komedia – ale jednak pozwalającego na uniesienie kącika ust w trakcie lektury.
Wiele rzeczy omawianych w tej książce miałam na zajęciach z zoopsychologii i z doświadczenia wiem, że mogą one zaciekawić również tych, którzy tematyką prozwierzęcą zajmują się bardziej hobbistycznie niż zawodowo.
Czy „Misterium życia zwierząt” ma wady? Tak i nie – wszystko zależy od tego, jakie mamy wymagania w stosunku do tej lektury. Z pewnością omawiane przykłady badań są potraktowane dość wybiórczo. Pozwala to na uniknięcie, co bardziej drastycznych i łamiących serce opisów, jednak jednocześnie nie pokazuje szerszego obrazu. Rozumiem takie podejście do tematu, dlatego sama za wadę tego nie uznam.
Jest tam kilka myśli, z którymi nie do końca się zgadzam. I żeby nie było – nie ma to nic wspólnego z wynikami badań – tych podważać nie mam zamiaru. Ale z drugiej strony są też takie, które dla większości ludzi mogą być nie do końca oczywiste, ale które warto brać pod uwagę, gdy ocenia się czyjeś działania.
Np. wiele ogrodów zoologicznych wyhodowane przez siebie zwierzęta z gatunków zagrożonych wyginięciem stara się wypuszczać na wolność. Z założenia jest to godna podziwu postawa. Jednak w ogólnym spojrzeniu na to postępowanie zapomina się o tym, że nie zawsze takie działanie przynosi same pozytywne konsekwencje. Ma to bowiem dużo powiązań niewidocznych na pierwszy rzut oka. I zwrócenie w tej książce uwagi na takie rzeczy jest fantastycznym posunięciem ze strony autora.
Czy więc polecam „Misterium życia zwierząt”? Tak. Natomiast jak zawsze przy tego typu lekturach zachęcam do krytycznego myślenia, sprawdzania zawartych w niej informacji, a tym samym zdobywania większej ilości wiedzy pozwalającej nie tylko na popisanie się nią przed znajomymi informacjami, że istnieje pięć smaków, a nie cztery, ale również na ocenę czy to lub inne źródło wiedzy jest odpowiednie.

En este libro de divulgación científica el autor nos explica, a través de diversos motivos y ámbitos, cómo piensan, sienten y viven algunos animales. Para ello usa más de 540 referencias sobre los estudios llevados a cabo en los mismos y las conclusiones que de ellos se obtuvieron.
El libro está dividido en 6 partes que abarcan temas como el sexo, la cultura, la socialización, el pensamiento o los sentimientos.
Los estudios de los que se habla están centrados, en la mayoría de casos, en delfines, ballenas, orcas, orangutanes, chimpancés, loros, hormigas y ratas/ratones. Se incluyen o mencionan algunos estudios llevados a cabo con otras especies pero éstas son las más mencionadas.
Es un libro muy interesante y actual (edición alemana 2017, edición española 2020) que ayuda a romper muchos mitos y ver a los animales (no humanos) como iguales a nosotros en muchos aspectos.
Me ha gustado especialmente el capítulo dedicado a la cultura. Nunca había hecho la reflexión de que "salvar a una especie de la extinción" no significa sólo el encerrar a esas especies en parques controlados y hacer que se reproduzcan, sino el protegerlas mucho antes de llegar a ese punto en sus ámbitos naturales para que su cultura, sus comportamientos normales, sus ritos y tradiciones como especie no se pierdan.
Lo más duro de leer del libro, más allá de las erratas que hay en la versión española que no son pocas, es la cantidad de salvajadas que se hacen con los animales con la "ciencia" por bandera. Sabiendo lo que sabemos ahora, ¿es realmente necesario que les sigamos tratando igual que cuando no sabíamos nada?
Sin duda una lectura muy necesaria para todas aquellas personas, mayores de 18 años por el carácter técnico de la lectura, interesadas en el Reino Animal.
El libro está dividido en 6 partes que abarcan temas como el sexo, la cultura, la socialización, el pensamiento o los sentimientos.
Los estudios de los que se habla están centrados, en la mayoría de casos, en delfines, ballenas, orcas, orangutanes, chimpancés, loros, hormigas y ratas/ratones. Se incluyen o mencionan algunos estudios llevados a cabo con otras especies pero éstas son las más mencionadas.
Es un libro muy interesante y actual (edición alemana 2017, edición española 2020) que ayuda a romper muchos mitos y ver a los animales (no humanos) como iguales a nosotros en muchos aspectos.
Me ha gustado especialmente el capítulo dedicado a la cultura. Nunca había hecho la reflexión de que "salvar a una especie de la extinción" no significa sólo el encerrar a esas especies en parques controlados y hacer que se reproduzcan, sino el protegerlas mucho antes de llegar a ese punto en sus ámbitos naturales para que su cultura, sus comportamientos normales, sus ritos y tradiciones como especie no se pierdan.
Lo más duro de leer del libro, más allá de las erratas que hay en la versión española que no son pocas, es la cantidad de salvajadas que se hacen con los animales con la "ciencia" por bandera. L'objectif de ce livre est clair: démontrer à l'aide de nombreux exemples d'études scientifiques que les autres espèces animales ont des capacités cognitives méconnues qui égalent ou se rapprochent de celles de l'humain. L'auteur a d'ailleurs créé une asbl (Individual Rights Initiative) pour faire reconnaître les droits de la personnalité aux animaux afin de pouvoir améliorer leur protection. J'ai trouvé de nombreuses informations intéressantes et le but tout à fait louable, mais je n'ai pas trop accroché au style d'écriture et aux nombreuses références à d'autres chapitres.

Die Querverweise und Erinnerungen finde ich hilfreich, auch wenn manch anderer davon genervt sein mag. So kann man zum einen von Kapitel zu Kapitel springen, das Buch längere Zeit pausieren oder in der Zukunft nachschlagen, ohne das gesamte Buch erneut lesen zu müssen. :)

I recommend it. Sometimes seems like the author wants to just fill in the paper and make the book longee but even though it is worth reading.

I truly wanted to enjoy the book, and while a lot of the information was fascinating, such as how crows in Japan have learned to use traffic lights to use cars to crack walnuts through imitation of other crows, the author also displayed biases and was ableist as well as sexist. He repeatedly referred to people as being "dumb", as in a mental disability. For example, he wrote on page 74, "You'll see an orangutan from a wildlife reserve talking by means of sing language with a deaf and dumb girl on Skype." (He goes on to say that is a fake, in support of a good cause, the Rainforest Action Network. He says that other great ape species have actually had conversation like this with human, but that this one was fake. He doesn't expand on why this specific one was fake. There are a few other times in the book in which he says something, and then doesn't expand on it)
He also at one point wrote, on page 21, on bonobos "One sex does not dominate the other; the opposite is of course the case with us and the other anthropoid ape species." With us . I was willing to give some leeway, as he didn't explain what he meant by that. If he meant in relation to the work towards equality, or in relation to physical differences (males typically being taller, typically run faster, the like (on average, not rule). It still raised a red flag regardless though.
However, in several other instances he uses sexist language. When comparing bonobos to humans, writing a situation, and if we were bonobos how we would react, he writes "...even the women's first thought would be of sex..." There were also other sexist parts. He referenced studies showing that sex-typed behavior is inherent, stating that "...the hypothesis that gender-specific behavior is all about upbringing is completely absurd," and references a study in which infants were shown videos of adults hitting or cradling a balloon, and male infants would hit the balloon, and female infants would alternate between hitting the balloon and cradling the balloon. The idea that sex-typed behavior is innate contradicts my own beliefs, causing me to look into into the study, to try and determine if it was incorrect/misrepresented and based off the author's biases, or if I did not want to accept it, as it went against my own beliefs. The study was published in 2011, and was conducted on (If I remember correctly) 25 male infants and 20 female infants. The author's of the article did mention that there may be other causes for difference in behavior, such as potential differences in how the male and female infants were raised, slight differences in how the adults shown hit the balloon, and similar things. They did believe that it was likely innate, but did mention that it may not be, which the author of the book did not mention. The idea either way of innate sex-typed behavior is still being debated as it is. The author's own occasional sexist views make it harder to personally tell if some of the ideas mentioned are correct, or biased. Some of the facts I am aware prior that they are biased through prior reading of a variety of well researched sources.
All in all, the book carries some truly fascinating information, such as on culture in animals, but the author does have some biases present making it harder to determine whether the information is correct or biased.

Voll mit interessanten Fakten. Aber zu wenig Quellen für eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit, zu viele möchtegern relatable "kennt ihr das wenn ihr mit Delfinen schwimmt und auf Weltreise seid". Es fühlt sich an wie ein YouTube Video ohne Punkt und komma. Dazu kommt das es geschrieben wie ne playlist auf shuffle. Angeblich damit man Kapitel einzeln lesen könnte aber da fast jede Seite mit Referenzen auf andere Kapitel gefüllt ist, ist das einfach nicht sinnvoll.

Laymen like me are not really in a position to judge whether this account of animal behaviour is full and unbiased. But I have to say that I found it compelling - perhaps the result of a psychological foible of which the book contains many. I don't think that we humans should rely on our animal brethren being more like us than we thought as a reason to stop treating them so badly, but it probably helps - and I will look at them through a different lens after reading this.

Eine leicht lesbare, erhellende Übersicht über die vor allem kognitiven Fähigkeiten und Verhaltensweisen von Tieren.
Für meinen Geschmack war es zwischendurch immer mal wieder zu undetailliert, dennoch fand Ich das Buch durchgehend interessant und angenehm zu lesen. Definitiv empfehlenswert
