Alvin^Schwartz Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Alvin Schwartz was the author of more than fifty books dedicated to and dealing with topics such as folklore and word play, many of which were intended for young readers. He is often confused with another Alvin_Schwartz, who wrote Superman and Batman daily comics strips and a novel titled The Blowtop.
This is a well-written guide to 24 different hobbies, divided into 4 sections... Crafts, Collecting, Nature Study and Science/Communications. Each chapter (roughly 15 to 20 pages long) focuses on one particular hobby. There are several sections of photos, many in color, as well as some drawings. The book was published in 1972, so many of the chapters will seem outdated, if not obsolete. But, others are probably just as valid today as when the book first appeared, especially the section on Nature Study. The author, Alvin Schwartz, is a friendly guide whose genuine appreciation of these hobbies is apparent on every page. If you're looking for a new and pleasant way to pass the time, or if you would like a little more info on a current interest, I definitely recommend this book.
