They were once orphans from London's roughest slums. Now they are students of Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Select Young Ladies, learning the art of spying and seduction. Bold, beautiful, and oh-so-dangerous, they are England's ultimate secret weapons…
The most skilled of Merlin's Maidens, Siena must unmask a traitor lurking among an exclusive club of book collectors. Armed with only her wits, her blades, and her sultry body, she joins the gentlemen at a country house party. But her prime suspect, disgraced ex-army officer Lord Kirtland proves as enigmatic as he is suspicious-and sinfully sensuous. Kirtland's instincts tell him the enticing "Black Dove" is hiding more than a luscious body beneath her fancy silks. Yet as he starts to plumb her secrets, a cunning adversary lays plans to destroy them both. To live, Siena must end her tantalizing dance of deception and desire-and decide whether to trust her head or her heart.
Andrea Pickens is a pseudonym for an author who has also written as Cara Elliott for Grand Central and Andrea Penrose for Kensington and NAL. Her historical mysteries and romantic novels are set in Regency England, an era that has fascinated her ever since she picked up a copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
A graduate of Yale, she has won numerous writing awards, including two Daphne Du Maurier Awards for historical mystery, the Golden Leaf, and she’s been a three-time finalist for the prestigious RITA Award. Her books have been translated into nine different languages.
The Spy Wore Silk is about a former street urchin who is plucked from the stews in London and trained to become one of England's most formidable weapons. Renamed Siena, she and her fellow students go through rigorous training in all forms of martial arts as well as the deadlier seductive arts that will become her raison d'etre into high society. As one of Merlin's Maidens, she is expected to fly solo and unmask who is selling England's secrets during the Napoleonic Wars. The traitor is discovered to be smuggling his secrets across the Channel through antique manuscripts, so our intrepid young spy sets out to ensnare an invitation to an extremely exclusive auction through the members of an equally exclusive club. These members are all possible suspects and so Siena sets out to capture their attention by concocting a slew of games, contests if you will, with Siena as the grand prize. While the men are busy running around, trying to outdo each other for the right to bed the newest courtesan in London, one man stands firm against the hysteria. Lord Julian Kirtland is no fool, and he immediately discovers Siena is not what she seems. Together, they seek out the traitor and set out to discover if their newfound passion can blossom into something longer and timeless.
While the premise of The Spy Wore Silk sounds exciting, it falls flat. It requires too much faith from the reader, and I just couldn't buy into this world. The whole contest scenario was just plain stupid. Nuff said. Siena is supposed to be a great spy, having trained for years for just this moment, only to spill the beans the moment Kirtland smiles at her and makes her heart flutter. Huh? I only hope real life spies are a little tougher to crack. The story is overpopulated and it's hard to keep track of who's who, plus the villains are a little too cartoonish, especially after all the dire cloak and dagger stuff.
It's not all bad though. I really liked Kirtland and how he respects Siena right from the start. I liked how there wasn't any, "I'm the lord, you're just the rabble." They meet on an equal playing field and I felt it allowed for more playfulness to come out between them. There is also one extremely erotic game of strip fencing that I would love to play. It was seriously one of the hottest, non sex game I have ever read about. If nothing else, read the book for that scene alone.
From the start of the book all the way to the end I was completely swept up in the mystery and intrigue! There were so many twists and turns that I could hardly put the book down. I loved the suspense and trying to figure out exactly who amongst the group couldn’t be trusted. The idea of a school that trained girls into lady spies was a unique take that I thoroughly enjoyed! I look forward to reading future books in this series!.

The start of a series of historical romances starring the pupils of a British school for female spies during the time of the Napoleonic wars. For this mission, Siena is called upon to determine which member of a rare book collecting society is selling government secrets to the French, so she passes herself off as a flamboyant courtesan and puts the men through a series of competitions for her favor, aimed at drawing out qualities that would reveal the traitor. One of the suspects--naturally, the most obvious suspect in many ways--is disconcertingly attractive, and finds his curiosity aroused by this mysterious woman despite his best efforts to ignore her. Intrigue ensues; along with the many other confrontations on the way to recognizing their feelings for each other, there's a bit of strip fencing.
All in good fun, and Perkins manages to work in some references to her heroines practicing tai chi and yoga without coming off too anachronistic. (After all, her espionage bureau has to be rather worldly by default...)
Siena, one of the Merlin's Mauraders, is on assignment to catch a traitor selling military secrets to the French. Playing the part of a courtesan known as the Black Dove, she infiltrates a house party of gentleman there for the auction of illuminated manuscripts. Lord Kirtland wants these books, but the lady captures his interest instead. He's suspicions of her games and knows there is more than the enticement of her company. If only they could trust each other to work together and capture a traitor. This one grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. Mild descriptive sex. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
Selina plucked her name from a spinning globe, much as she was plucked out of the gutter by Lord Lynsley. He saw in her a tenacity that would be perfect for his unique scheme, a scheme that saw orphans from the stews placed in the care of Mrs. Merlin where these select young women of no breeding would be taught to save England in it's hour of need. They were taught culture and seduction. They were taught to wield a blade and a pistol as well as any man. In fact, better than many. They were taught to rely on their own wits and work alone for king and country using the more subtle forms of warfare. And as the war with Napoleon rages on, England has need of Merlin's Marauders. Or it has need of one of them, their best. Selina. It is time for her to fly. There is a traitor who has been leaking documents to the French through expensive and rare editions of books. The most recent missive that has been stolen is in regards to Russia's alliance with England. If this were to make it into the hands of the French that alliance would come to an end. Because of the unique method of delivery the traitor might have tipped their hand. The Golden Page Club is a group of six men with disparate personalities who come together to talk about incunabula. Dunster, Fitzwilliam, Winthrop, Leveritt, Jadwin, and Kirtland are all men of means, but it's James Winchester, the Earl of Kirtland, whom Lord Lynsley has singled out. Kirtland had a rather glorious military career that ended rather publicly. If any one of these bookworms holds a grunge against England, he is the most likely. Which is where Selina comes in. She has launched herself, rather dramatically, into society as The Black Dove, a courtesan in search of a protector. And that protector could only be a member of The Gilded Page Club. All six members have been invited to Marquand Castle for a fortnight for an exclusive auction of a set of rare fourteenth century Burgundian Psalters illuminated by the monks of St. Sebastian Abbey. Thanks to Lord Lynsley, Selina will be one of the guests. During the course of the house party she will host a competition amongst the six men to see which one of them will protect her. All the challenges though are designed to route out the spy. Little did she think when starting this mission that her heart was most at risk. Selina is in danger of falling for a man who might just be a traitor according to Lynsley. But only time will tell if her instincts are right about Kirtland or if she's unwittingly risked the fate of her country.
I have been a fan of Andrea Penrose since I picked up her book Sweet Revenge on a perfect bookstore outing with my Dad one cold winter night in 2011. And yes, I can close my eyes and picture myself there in Barnes and Noble just like it was yesterday and not fourteen years ago. Little did I realize that Andrea Penrose was just another pen name of Andrea DaRif, who taught a class at Yale in 2010 with perennial favorite, Lauren Willig, called "Reading the Historical Romance." If I had put two and two together I would have hunted down all her books before that felicitous bookstore outing. For my blog's Regency Romp back in 2022 I devoured all of her Lady Arianna books having not realized that they had continued as eBooks after the first three were released in paperback. I had a lot of catching up to do. It was glorious. But after you've read all the Lady Arianna and all the Wrexford and Sloane books and even read her books written as Cara Elliott, what is a reader to do? It turns out she thankfully had YET ANOTHER pen name out there, Andrea Pickens! And, well, it just so happens that Andrea's partnered with Oliver-Heber Books to re-publish a number of her old Signet Regency books as well as her Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies series, The Spy Wore Silk being the first volume in this series. I went into this book with no expectations and was wonderfully surprised that this book felt written just for me. Books, art, a country house party!?! All while trying to foil dastardly spies? Seriously, written. For. Me. It captured the same joy I had when I first read Lauren Willig's The Secret History of the Pink Carnation, which is the standard by which I judge all modern authors writing in the Regency. Yet there was also the delicious romance of Lisa Kleypas's Wallflowers series. And yes, I realize that at this point all I'm doing is listing favorite series that The Spy Wore Silk reminded me of, but that's because I honestly think that after reading only the first book that this will become a new favorite series of mine and I can't wait to read the next three books. This book was just such fun, with memorable characters and so much appetizing alliteration. But what I felt stood out from the crowd with this book was that by posing as a courtesan Selina is treated very differently by men. This isn't the ton we are used to. Yes, women are always in danger of being compromised, for Selina it could be much much worse. They all think she's chattel and treat her as such. Thankfully she can defend herself. But this sure isn't Jane Austen's England. I need more!
This book took me a while to really get into, however, once I reached my stride it was wonderful. I enjoyed the heroine being in charge of the direction their journey took. It was interesting watching the various characters jockey for position. Seeing Siena gain more and more confidence in herself as her mission proceeded was nice.
Siena is a member of an elite group of women known as, Merlin’s Marauders. These women have been hand chosen by the Marquess of Lynsley, his official title—Minister to the Secretary of State for War. He has the difficult job of dealing with the worst of the worst threats to the crown and the country. Siena was plucked from the slums of St. Giles and given a very rigorous, intense and diverse training.
James Winchester, the Earl of Kirtland, has suffered massive betrayal while in the military for the crown. His superior was a puffed up nincompoop who refused to see the forest for the trees. This caused him to be separated from service under a cloud that the military did nothing to repair. Apparently it was easier to allow gross incompetence in a higher ranking officer to be brushed under the carpet and the lives James saved to be of no importance. He is tired of society and their penchant for gossip and pettiness. He is happier alone with a good book.
The mission Siena is sent on appeared cut and dry, but any time treason is involved there is going to be mess. I enjoyed the grand, bold way Ms. Pickens chose to introduce Siena to her suspects. I liked seeing her work out the possibility of wrong doing of each of the six men she was investigating. It was interesting seeing the interactions between her and James and watching them each grapple with trust and allowing themselves to let their guards down. As things progressed you could feel not only the tension in themselves and each other, but the doubts they had.
Ms. Pickens gives us not just the villain to uncover, but throws in a very handsome and unusually well informed red herring. This red herring was well placed and did indeed stir the pot, leaving you having to "work" a bit harder to discover the true villain. Alone the journey I had my suspicions and was pleasantly surprised that I was right, if only partially. It was a lovely twist that left me satisfied with the villain. Ms. Pickens also left several things unresolved, but not in a frustrating way, that will lead nicely into future books in this series...I hope.
This was the first book I have read by Ms. Pickens and I find myself looking forward to visiting with Merlin's Marauders. The timeframe of the story is my favorite and I usually read Historical Romance. This was a lovely mix of that and mastery. The mystery was nicely planned and the pace was pleasant. I enjoyed the romance development as well.

A new series, The Spy Wore Silk, by Andrea Pickens offers intrigue, mystery and romance rolled into one. We meet Siera, who is a former street urchin, from the toughest slums in London, plucked and taken to be trained at Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Select Young Ladies. While there, the ladies undergo extensive training in all forms of martial arts as well as seduction that will become her raison d'être to high society.
Her first assignment is to secure an invite to a country house party and infiltrate a gentlemen’s club known as The Gilded Page Club where she is hopeful to find the traitor selling England's secrets to France during the Napoleonic Wars. The traitor is smuggling England’s secrets across the Channel using antique manuscripts and Siera feels that Lord James Kirtland, the Earl of Winchester, with his background in military intelligence and the suspect.
Kirtland on his part is not fooled by Siera’s games that have the other gentlemen falling over themselves in the vain hope of being the first to sleep with Siera, the newest courtesan in London. He feels that there is more to her than meets the eye.
During the revelry at the house party, there is a cunning adversary bent on destroying them so Kirtland and Siera must put away the games, come clean with each other about their respective reasons for being there and work together to nab the traitor. All this of course, throws them into proximity that has them falling in love. Thrilling adventure that kept me riveted and thoroughly enjoying myself.
I would recommend this and look forward with eager anticipation to the rest of the series. I received an ARC from the publishers and Booksprout and submit my honest review voluntarily.
This is the first book in the Merlin Maiden’s series by Andrea Pickens. The series revolves around young girls who were once orphans from London's toughest slums. They have been taken in as students of Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Select Young Ladies, where they learn the art of spying and seduction. Bold, beautiful, and oh-so-dangerous, these young women are England's ultimate secret weapons.
The story follows Siena, who is selected for her first mission: to unmask a traitor within an exclusive club of book collectors. It's time for her to put her training to the test as she uses her skills of seduction, wits, and weapons, masquerading as the "Black Dove" at a country house party.
Her prime suspect, the enigmatic and suspicious ex-army officer Lord Kirtland, is as sinfully sensuous as he is difficult to read. He suspects there is more to Siena than meets the eye. As they try to unravel each other’s secrets, a cunning adversary lays plans to destroy them both. To survive, Siena must end her tantalizing dance of deception and desire, deciding whether to trust her head or her heart.
This masterful tale of secrets, betrayal, misunderstandings, intrigue, and mystery is captivating and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The beautifully written development of feelings between Siena and Kirtland enhances the intrigue of the story. Their complex and evolving relationship adds depth to an already thrilling narrative, making this book a must-read for fans of romance and espionage alike.

Andrea Pickens’ “The Spy Wore Silk” is a re-release of a spy/regency romance and the first in a series of stories of Mrs. Merlin’s Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies (I love the new series title!).
Siena, an accomplished pupil of Mrs. Merlin’s Academy is tapped to ferret out a traitor of the Crown among the most wealthy and influential in London Society. She has little to go on, but quickly narrows her suspects to the members of a gentlemen’s book club (they seek to purchase the rarest of tomes for their personal and collective collections). Siena matches wits with the enigmatic Lord Kirtland, but isn’t sure she can trust him. Soon bullets are flying and Siena is in danger. Is she closer than she realizes? Can she root out the traitor before it’s too late?
“The Spy Wore Silk” is an excellent adventure full of intrigue, twists, and turns. The story plays out in an ancient castle in the remote reaches of England. This backdrop is perfect for the mystery and moodiness of the story. The characters that I am guessing form the backbone of the series are delightfully intriguing. Also, Orlov! (for fans of Andrea Penrose’s Lady Arianna series)
This story is great for readers who enjoy regency spy, regency romance, and regency mysteries.
I received an advance review copy for free from Booksprout and Oliver Heber Books, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Sienna was plucked from the streets and trained in drawing room, seduction, and martial arts. She is sent on a mission undercover as a mysterious courtesan to find a traitor and papers that they are passing. At first the group of rare book collectors she entices seem relatively harmless. But she devises games with her as the ultimate prize to help figure out the culprit. Kirkland was formerly branded a traitor for disobeying orders and choosing to save his men in battle and he is not interested in he games until he realizes she has an ulterior motive. I agree with him about being angry that she was sent on this dangerous mission alone especially when dealing with aggressive men who are determined to take what they want even by force. James and Siena draw closer but will they be able to make it out of the mission alive? There were plenty of twists and turns and some suspenseful moments in this steamy historical spy romance.
Selina, a street orphan who chose her name from the globe, has become one of the best students in Mrs. Merlin’s school, and as such, it’s best spy. Her current assignment is to find and track a traitor, presumably a member of the Golden Page, a rare book collectors society, who is selling information to the French. Posing as a courtesan, she flirts with the men to gain information. Her prime suspect, Lord Julian Kirtland, turns out not to be the traitor. He then joins her in the hunt. The story has intrigue, secrets, a bit danger, and some fun. Will Selina and Kirtland discover the traitor? Will they allow the attraction between them to grow? An interesting story and the first book in the Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies series. I received a free copy of this book via BookSprout and voluntarily reviewed it.
The Spy and the Earl Siena is no ordinary woman; she is a skilled and lethal force. Trained in the art of combat by a secretive academy, she embarks on a perilous mission to capture a spy. Her journey is fraught with danger, where every move could be her last. As she plays a dangerous game of seduction, she finds herself entangled in a web of peril. Someone is willing to go to any lengths to stop her from uncovering the truth. But is the earl the traitor she seeks? Though her instincts urge her to trust him, is that trust rooted in emotion or logic? A captivating historical romance filled with mystery, betrayal, and suspense, The Spy Wore Silk weaves a thrilling blend of action, adventure, and romance that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. I recommend it for fans of gripping, twist-filled tales.
This is the first installment of the series Merlin's Maidens and is a tantalizing historical romance that delivers a captivating blend of intrigue, seduction, and espionage. Set against the backdrop of an elite academy that trains orphaned girls from London’s slums into deadly spies, the story follows Siena, the most accomplished of Mrs. Merlin’s Maidens, as she navigates a world of secrets and scandal. Tasked with unmasking a traitor at a country house party, Siena meets her match in the brooding and mysterious Lord Kirtland. Their chemistry crackles, but danger looms large. With sharp dialogue, sizzling tension, and a touch of danger, this novel is a deliciously entertaining read if you are a fan of steamy, suspenseful historical romance.

The heroine is part of a group of women who were taken in as young, orphaned girls, to be trained as special agents. When she is picked to find out who is a traitor, she disguises herself as a courtesan and tries to use her wanton behavior to find out the guilty party. The hero is among a group of suspects. He is a little too laid back for my taste. He doesn’t seem to care if his name is cleared for being insubordinate. I felt at times the story dragged as I wanted more action and less of the seductive part.

An well written book in which the author promotes females as intelligent, strong, capable and ready to serve their country. This story is set in Great Britain in a time when women were definitely considered less then men and with very few rights and protections. Young girls/women who lived a hand to mouth on the streets of London were "recruited" by a special agency to become super spies who had to be willing to do whatever it took to perform the job. I liked that the women were portrayed as capable and strong. To bad this actually never happened.
This was a pretty good book. I tried to enjoy reading it but it was too wordy for my taste. When I find myself rolling my eyes at the over descriptive scenes I know it is just not working for me. I really liked the storyline idea, take orphan girls from the stews and train them into spies and how to be a lady to help the Crown during the war. Had it going with everything but the over kill on descriptions!
This book made me cry, laugh, smile, stress eat, everything 😂 I love it so much, I can’t express how amazing this book is, and how it takes you on a journey with theses strong independent, beautiful, women. Who can kick as better then any man, which makes me soooooo proud. I’ve been searching for a 18th century, strong women, spy romance for agers now and this... this was the cherry on my cake, thank you! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Siena is a hard-core spy. She kicks, she seduces, she fights, and she spies. Sent to capture a spy selling secrets, Siena must use her womanly wiles to suss out the spy. The hero is a book worm, and their relationship is a little wild.
This book was okay. You do have to pull on your reserve of belief or ignore some scenes for the book to totally make sense. James lacked depth and could have challenged Siena more.
I enjoyed this book about a chosen group of orphan girls selected from the St.Giles area in London. Siena was one of the girls that was taught to fight, shoot and many other things. She meets Julian Henning, the Earl of Kirtland,at a house party where her job is to retrieve a stolen document. This is a good book to read!
"The Spy Wore Silk" by Andrea Pickens offers a refreshing blend of historical romance and intrigue that left me thoroughly entertained. The novel's protagonist, Siena, is a compelling character with wit and bravery, making her an engaging heroine to follow. Pickens' attention to historical detail breathes life into the setting, immersing the reader in the elegance and danger of Regency England.
The plot unfolds at a brisk pace, balancing romance and espionage seamlessly. The chemistry between the main characters is well-developed, leaving room for tension and growth throughout their journey. Side characters add depth to the story, enriching the narrative and providing moments of humor and camaraderie.
Overall, "The Spy Wore Silk" is a delightful read for fans of historical romance with a dash of mystery. Andrea Pickens has crafted a story that captivates and entertains, earning a well-deserved 4-star rating. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging and romantic escape.
I can always count on Andrea Pickens' books to capture my interest and distract me from daily life. And really, who doesn't need a distraction right now?
With complex characters and twists that kept me turning pages, not only did I love this book, but I am looking forward to the next one in the series!

Siena is fire and ice. She’s deadly with a sword, her intellect and her wits. She’s a soy and a dangerous one. An orphan from the streets, she’s is a skilled marauder (soy).
Kittland’s boring compared to Siena. I think she needed a different pairing. Like a good vicar.
Avenging Angel, Valkyrie - all perfect ways to describe our heroine. Imagine doing all those self-defense moves in long silk gowns with petticoats, corsets and your cleavage ready to burst out 😉. A great adventure and I'm looking forward to the next Merlin's Maidens stpry.
This first book in the Merlins Maidens was an interesting and unique spy regency romance that told about females that were trained in a British school to help protect the crown. I enjoyed the intrigue, mystery, and romance. I recommend reading.
Good read! Fascinating look at how the government sets up this woman as a spy in a totally different country and society. Hard for me to imagine such an opulent lifestyle she is thrust into.
This book had an interesting premise. A little different twist on the genre. However, it could’ve saved about 200 pages. And would’ve been a better read.
