This big trade paperback collects the eight Amaze Ink issues of REPLACEMENT GOD. Series creator Zander Cannon garnered a Harvey Award nomination for his work on this series, before going on to win an Eisner along with Alan Moore and Gene Ha for Top Ten. Many of these issues are out of print, and this collection is the best introduction to Zander's work. It will especially appeal to fans of fantasy books and good old-fashioned adventure tales.
I remember picking up Replacement God #1 way back when. I think I got most of the initial run but missed 1 or 2 because smaller press books weren't always consistent. I was glad to find this book one collection and it reads much better as one solid book.
In some of the art, it's hard to tell what's going on and some of the lettering can be hard to read. I think the printer had the pages set too close to the gutter as I had to really pry the book open to read a few word balloons, too.
Minor flaws aside, I enjoyed the storyline, world building and sense of humor.
The story continues in The Replacement God and Other Stories which was published by Image Comics but I don't believe it was ever collected into one volume. Time to hit up eBay and see if I can track all of those down.
Right now, I’m a 3.5 stars, but I feel this will age better and I do want to continue with this series. I made the mistake relating the illustration style to Jeff Smith’s Bone (which there are a few similarities), but I started comparing this too closely to Bone (which I love). I found this good, though I couldn’t fully get on this book’s wavelength. Like I said earlier, it’s got my interest enough I want to follow through with the story. Here’s hoping my interest will grow, but for now, a soft recommend from me.
While rich in detail, this graphic novel attains a level of readability that does not require you to be a student of ancient languages. Cannon weds engaging characters, fairy tale storylines and a light-touched irreverence for the sacred into a very entertaining read.
I hate cliffhanger series ends... I finally hit my stride with reading this, and now... poof! Once my eyes adjusted to the monochrome, I was into it, though. (It gained a star over last time, even.)
