I enjoyed this very much for about the first 7-8 Chapters or so. We start off meeting Dave as he tells us in the first person about his background, his experiences and discoveries growing up and his special friendship with his best friend. While in his first year of college, Dave experiences a tragic loss and decides to join the Navy to see the world and figure out which direction to take in life. All this was wonderful to me and I found myself wanting to follow Dave on his journey. Then things got complicated and a bit too cheesy for my taste.

The story actually revolves around three other main characters besides Dave and we are introduced to them as Dave meets them. This is when things started falling apart for me. They all took turns narrating the story in the first person and if that wasn't bad enough, there were sections where there was head hopping in the third person. The author was clear on letting us know who was going to take over the narrative before hand, but I still found it confusing and hard to follow. It think it was mainly because they pretty much sounded alike and expressed themselves in similar ways. There wasn't much for me to differentiate between the personalities of four men who are from different parts of the country and have different backgrounds.

Then there were parts of the story that had me rolling my eyes. There's the falling in love within hours and the declaration of such a thing. There was another major part of the story that was hard to me to believe involving Doug and Brent, just couldn't buy it. No major drama, all very easy, nobody had a problem with anything and was very understanding and supportive. They are in the Navy, seriously? This is part of a trilogy, and although the guys a likable enough, my journey with them ends here.

The first person narrator is never a good choice if one wants to explore more than one point of view in a story and in this novel the head hopping is driven to extremes. There are parts where even switching to a different narrator doesn't help, so the author suddenly chooses an omniscient narrator for a chapter.

Everybody speaks as if he were a genteel 60+ person, even teenagers. And frankly: where's the plot?

Strangely enough, this is one of my comfort reads. When I'm upset, sitting down with the splash trilogy where nothing really bad ever happens after the big bang in the beginning can be quite calming.
