Dylan Monroe is the kind of chick females love to hate, but children and dogs mysteriously adore. She's a material girl, living in a material world filled with diamonds, furs, limousines, celebrities, and private planes. To the world, she has it all, but behind closed doors, she has nothing. Almost bankrupt, she finds solace with State, a wealthy entrepreneur with a heart of steel, the man who breaks her heart time and time again. When State leaves her heart in shambles, she turns to Angel, her best friend's brother. She's had a secret crush on him for years. Swept off her feet by her new love, but still mending from the pain of the old one, Dylan finds herself caught up in a web of lies, lust, love, and betrayal. National bestselling author Keisha Ervin delivers a sophisticated love story filled with laughter, witty banter . . . and excessive shopping!
Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Keisha Ervin is a prolific writer and devoted mother. Her success has drawn much deserved attention to herself and her hometown. She is the author of the National Best-Sellers Chyna Black, Me & My Boyfriend, Mina's Joint and Hold U Down, as well as the novel Torn and the short story After the Storm, featured in the Street Love anthology.
Material girl by Keisha Ervin was a damn good read. This book brought me 2 tears at the end. I'm so glad Dylan put her big girl panties on and finally so the light. And I hope it's not 2 late 4 her. Can't wait 2 read the next 2 books in this series.
Let me start off by saying that Keisha Ervin is one of my FAVORITE urban fiction authors. I have read all of her books starting with her first novel “Me and My Boyfriend”, which is still by far one of my favorite books of all time! I find that her books encompass relatable situations for the every day young woman heightened with some things we may want to experience but do not have the means to. When one hears “urban fiction” I think they instantly think vulgarity, sex, and drugs. While a lot of times that is the case, this author goes beyond that. I notice a pattern of “relationship” related topics. If we have not experienced something that she has written, I can guarantee we know someone who knows someone who has been through it! I read a lot of books mainly from the urban fiction genre but because of the type of person I am (a “sucka for love”), my reading preference is books that deal with the topic. I am going to try to do a review of her latest book entitled “Material Girl” without it doubling as a spoiler, just in case any of you lovely people are interested in picking it up.
In my opinion, Material Girl is a good book. If I had to put it on my list of favorite novels written by Keisha Ervin, it would be number 4. The book is about a young woman by the name of Dylan Monroe and her relationships with her boyfriend, State, the handsome, successful, liar, her mother, Candie, the outrageous man and money chaser, her best friend, Billie, who is brutally honest with everyone else but herself, her cousin Tee Tee, who is just off-the-hook, and Billie’s brother, Angel, who is also handsome and successful like State, but is the opposite in every other way as far as Dylan is concerned. The title of the book definitely describes Dylan, she is a “label-whore”, who purchases more than she necessarily can afford and thinks she has it all because she owns a mass amount of material things. Throughout this novel you will see Dylan loving someone that doesn’t love her back, then she gets a good man but is so stuck on the bad one that she doesn’t recognize it until its too late. I recommend for anyone who loves to a good read about love, hate, lies, betrayal, infidelity, denial, drama, and steamy sex scenesJ .The ending isnt strong but you can tell its a set-up for a part II and I respect the growth of the character so I was satisfied.
Oh and I just read that we can expect part II to release on July 26, 2011. I already have it added on my Amazon Shopping List because although it wasn’t my favorite, it definitely is a good read that held my attention from beginning to end and I would love to see what happens next!
This book is so messy! I forgot how frustrating and fun it was to read these urban books! Dylan is truly dummy built but she can't help it. That epilogue...i screamed!
Spoiler Free Review 4 out of 5STARS Genre Urban Lit/Romance
I thought this book was pretty good but the main chick Dylan was not quick on the up take. Dylan has an inheritance and throughout the book she just spends, spends and spends some more. Mind you Dylan does not have a J O B. In the mean time she has been seeing her off and on ex bf State. Problem is this dude is all out for self and will throw Dylan under the bus if need be. While out in LA with her bestie Billie(girl) and she finds out just how out for self Sate can be... But Dylan is not broken she moves on with Billie's little brother Angel. Angel is a pro boxer and all kinds of sexy, him and Dylan hit it off and sparks fly. Unfortunately Dylan has a weakness. State. And when he calls she goes running right back to the heartbreak hotel much to Angel's dismay.
Dylan was very naive and insecure about herself in alot of ways. I gave this book 4Stars b/cause of Angel this dude was smokin HAWT!!!!! It took waaay to much for Dylan to come to her senses. This chick had to suffer too much lost to finally see the light. SMDH... The secondary characters played their part well Candy,Billie and Tee Tee are hilarious to the point of tears!!:D
My Rating Characters- Likable Writing Style- Good and Witty Plot/Storyline- Enjoyable Overall- Enjoyable Read
I absolutely looooved this book. This was the first book Ive ever read by Keisha Ervin but its sure not the last. This is a must read and I hope there is a part 2 coming out........SOON!!!!!
As usual Keisha delivers another exclusive read, just when you think her books are going to be predictable she fools you, the ending wasn't quite what i thought it'd be but a good ending nonetheless.
This was a pretty good book. I wanted Angel and Dylan to work out but she wasn’t ready to move on. Rebound relationships aren’t the best. It’s good to get closure before moving on, if you don’t someone always ends up heart. Angel knew what he was getting involved with when messing around with Dylan on the rebound. I hated that Dylan broke his heart. It’s hard to find a good man and I hate seeing women not appreciate them. I like the ending of this book, it gives me hope for Angel and Dylan.
Dylan worked my nerves the entire book 😩. Great read overall. Found myself talking out loud due to my frustrations with her. I felt for Billy but we all have that one friend that just doesn’t listen.
One of the first books I'd read by this author nearly a decade ago & I guess I liked given I'd invested in purchasing BOOK 2! LOL! Wonder why Ms. Ervin seems to only promote Ashley Antoinette's books but has stopped writing her own anymore?
Definitely a great read that I didn't want to put down. Dylan was so blinded by materialistic things that she often found herself making many mistakes. She allowed one mans lies to cause her to lose the best thing she'd ever had. Billie and Tee-Tee were great friends to have because they often kept it real regardless of how harsh it seemed. Tee-Tee was beyond a trip and I truly loved his character. Billie was caught up in Cain but it was good knowing Knox was able to bring some joy back into her life. Now Candy was trifling for what she pulled on Dylan and needed to find her own way instead of all the get rich quick schemes. Angel was the epitome of a good man and instead of Dylan appreciating it, she allowed her insecurities to dictate her decisions. State worked my nerves to no end and Ashton got one up on him for sure. Dylan proved that things can change in the blink of an eye and none of the materialistic possessions owned will matter. I can't wait to start part 2.
I really enjoyed this book. I finished it in 2 days and it would have been one if I could have kept my eyes open last night. Ervin is definitely one of my favorite urban lit writers...she is very good at telling a story! She does a good job at creating characters that you can relate to and understand. Many of Ervin's writers will be able to relate to Dylan and Billie, some may even be able to relate to Tee Tee. Ervin kept my interest and the plot was quite intriguing. I'm actually going to buy Material Girl 2 and support Ervin. I appreciate a good story. And Ervin actually delivers.
Keisha Ervin has done it again. She's such an amazing writer especially for the Urban Literature world. Her books have always showed that there's a truth in Love. From "Me and My Boyfriend", "Mina's Joint", "Gunz and Roses" and "Material Girl" all are the epitome of true black love. You may have obstacles but love somehow prevails. Ervin is an inspiration to me. This book was a strong eye-opener that you have to know you deserve love and it can be there right in front of you. You definitely see the character arc in this book for the characters Dylan and Billie.
Very well paced story of poor little rich girl Dylan Monroe. Dylan is, a self centered, label whore who spends frivolously but loves too seriously. The object of her desire is State. He is a rich, egotistical man who does what he wants while blindly stringing Dylan along.
We get to meet Candy along the way and makes it perfectly clear how Dylan came to be the way she is. Dylan has 2 bffs that love her to death but hold no punches when they think she's letting State play her.
When Dylan finally has her "aha" moment it changes her life.
Mrs. Ervin did a more than splendid job on this book! I recommend this book to all the pretty girls put there who think they have it all and love to be selfish and spend spend spend! This was a delight to read and I learned so much about each character. Some are just not willing to change their ways like Candy. Eventually, everyone is happy and chooses their own directions and make their own personal decisions. I can't wait to read the rest of the series! I'm dying to know if the baby will be Dylan Jr or Angel Jr...
I loved this book from the very beginning. Dylan was spoiled rotten and thought that money could buy happiness. State kept coming into her life and was her drug of choice. I loved the bond that Billie and Tee Tee had with Dylan. It's hard to find that bond these days. Angel was the one for Dylan but she didn't see it until it was too late. I highly recommend this book.
Keisha Ervin is a very good writer. this book is about this girl name Dylan is one of them girls that loves to hate. She’s a material girl, living in a material world filled with diamonds, furs, limousines, celebrities, and private planes. this book on some pages can reflect on my life some can't but dont get me wrong Keisha Ervin is a strong writer.
Material Girl was good from being to end. Although I could not stand Dylan in the beginning, as she grew I grew to like her. Her best friends are AMAZING, reminds me of my own. I loved this book and had it not been a second one coming out soon I wouldve been HIGHLY upset with Keisha Ervin lol. She's a great writer!
This was an interesting read. It had a little bit of everything including a ton of drama. The storyline was thoroughly entertaining, sometimes heartbreaking, and a little bit sad also. Dylan did make a complete evolution with her life, and the way the story ending makes me intrigued to see what will happen in part 2.
oh wow! I've been sitting on this one for awhile...I finally picked it up and couldn't put it down..Dylan, Billie, and Tee-Tee will keep you wanting to find out what is going on next..Dylan will learn the hard way that Material things come and Material Things go....enjoyed this one now I am on to part 2
This book was absolutely amazing from beginning to end! So refreshing to read an urban book that did not revolve around drugs, violence, and nonsense. I truly couldn't put it down! I am so proud of the growth Dylan had. She was a mess but she finally did get it together. Ready for part 2! Ms. Erwin has a new fan in me!
I really enjoyed this book. It hit close to home and felt almost as if I was reading bits and pieces of my life. definately a good, I enjoyed the characters and I had a few lol moments. would definitely recommend.
