Benjamin Read writes comics and makes films. He wrote the multiply award-nominated PORCELAIN: A GOTHIC FAIRY TALE, the silent comic BUTTERFLY GATE, and children’s book, NIGHT POST, as well as the TRUE GRIT and SUPER 8 comic adaptations. He also wrote and produced the films ARMISTICE and 500 MILES NORTH. He is one of the founder members of the Improper Books comics collective, and is fuelled principally by tea and whimsy. He is currently working on the rest of the Porcelain sequence, alongside writing his first novel.

Emily mag van haar ouders soms weer naar het Middernacht Uur. Maar ze krijgt wel een soort avondklok mee, om een bepaalde tijd moet ze thuis zijn. In het vorige boek was er aan het einde een strijd met de machtige Nocturna. Samen met de Bibliotheek werd de strijd gestreden. Nu is de rust teruggekeerd en kan Emily genieten van alle magische wezens in het Middernacht Uur.

Emily wordt op een gegeven moment achtervolgt door standbeelden en schilderijen beginnen te bewegen als zij in de buurt komt. Emily begrijpt er vrij weinig van. Wie wil haar iets aandoen? Ze gaat samen met haar vriend Tarkus op onderzoek uit naar ‘het gat’ in het Middernacht Uur. Maar andere personages proberen er voor te zorgen dat ze die niet vinden.

Ga mee met Emily in dit magische avontuur door het oude Londen. De wereld wordt duidelijk beschreven en je voelt echt de sfeer. Er zit (weer) in de tweede helft van het boek veel actie. Soms ging het me even iets te snel, maar de strijd is niet zo snel gestreden als Emily dacht.

Dit boek is geschreven voor kinderen van 10 jaar en ouder.

Ich fand den zweiten Teil tatsächlich spannender als den ersten, auch hatte ich persönlich das Gefühl, dass die Geschichte schneller startet, was natürlich auch daran liegt, dass man das Grundkonzept und die Charaktere schon kennt. Wie man erfährt, geht Emily nun regelmäßig mit ihren Eltern in die Mitternachtsstunde, um dort ihre magischen Púca-Fähigkeiten zu trainieren. Da ihre Mutter aktuell jedoch schwanger ist, darf diese nicht in die Mitternachtsstunde. Jedoch erlaubt sie es Emily einmal mit ihrem Vater mitzugehen und alleine zu trainieren, sie soll sich dabei jedoch genau an die aufgestellten Regeln halten. Das funktioniert mal so gar nicht.
Emily trifft auf ihre Púca-Familie.
Kurz darauf taucht auch noch Bibliothek auf und bittet Emily die Mitternachtsstunde zu retten – erneut. In der Mitternachtsstunde tauchen immer mehr Gegenstände aus normalen Welt auf und die Magie entweicht zeitgleich aus der Mitternachtsstunde, was schlussendlich zu deren Zerstörung führen würde.
Man trifft viele Protagonisten aus dem ersten Band wieder. Dazu kommen aber viele neue kreative Ideen sowie die Figuren aus Emilys Familie.
Die Geschichte ist spannend, aufregend und teils sehr rasant. An manchen Stellen ist sie auch ein wenig gruselig. Dank Emilys Mundwerk, das die teils nur schlecht unter Kontrolle hat, kommt es aber auch zur einen oder anderen sehr unterhaltsamen Situation.
Emilys Art und ihre Ausdrucksweise fand ich im ersten Band durchgängig unterhaltsam, jetzt im zweiten war es teilweise jedoch einfach too much. Sie befolgt keine Regeln, ist teilweise unhöflich, trotzig, bricht im Grunde ständig ihre Versprechen, auch wenn sie damit ja nur Gutes erreichen möchte, ist nur genervt und gelangweilt von ihrem Menschen-Freunden. Zeitgleich ist sie dann aber leicht zu verunsichern, was mir sehr sympathisch war, da sie nun mal ein 12(?)-jähriges Mädchen ist, dass sich halt als etwas Besonderes sieht und dabei ein wenig übersieht, dass sie auf sich alleine gestellt in beiden Bänden auf den ersten 50 Seiten verstorben wäre.

Ich hab den zweiten Teil gerne gelesen und bin schon gespannt, was der dritte Teil bringt. Ich hoffe doch sehr, dass es mehr über ihrer Púca-Familie zu lesen geben wird.

Ik vond dit echt een leuk en goed boek! Voor mijn gevoel wat hoger leesniveau dan het vorige kinderboek dat ik las (Miljonairskind - Ilona de Lange).
Door dit boek werd ik echt meegezogen in de wereld van het Middernacht Uur, zelfs ik (met weinig fantasie) zie deze fantasiewereld echt voor me.
Het boek is fantasierijk, spannend, avontuurlijk, soms grappig en soms serieus. Je kunt uit dit boek ook nog wat lessen halen over samenwerking, familiebanden en de (soms onduidelijke) lijn tussen goed en kwaad.

Biba and I went into the Midnight Howl without having read book one, The Midnight Hour, but we found that this can be read happily as a standalone with plenty of looks back to the first story to explain how it all fits in. The world is just wonderful though, utterly filled with magic and magical creatures that were fantastic to discover. The really is something for every reader in this book whether it be more on the spooky or more on the whimsical side, we both loved both the Library and Art!

Emily is a great protagonist, although she is probably more for the upper range with her thoughts and actions, however, Biba thought that she was very brave and determined, so what do I know! Emily admits that her "gob" runs away from her so despite her speak first attitude she does keep herself in check. The dynamic she has with her newly found family members is brilliantly played out. The Victorian backdrop lends itself perfectly to the story which is hugely atmospheric, plenty of cobbled streets and swirling mists and things that go bump in the night. It can also be incredibly beautiful, a thorough picture painted so as a reader you knew exactly how to visualise each scene.

I would say that this is probably better placed for the upper end of the middle grade market, Biba is a strong reader for nearly 10 years old but this book uses complex language at times, is very descriptive and she often stumbled whilst reading aloud with me. 

If you enjoy darkly atmospheric, magical reads, with lots of humour and holes in the fabric of space, then you will love The Midnight Howl! Thank you so much to Chicken House for sending us a copy of this for review.

I loved the first book but I actually think I enjoyed the sequel even more! Emily is just such a great character and I laughed out loud quite a few times at some of the things she said/thought! The worldbuilding is brilliant (as it was in the first book) and I love the spooky atmosphere of the Midnight Hour. Laura Trinder and Benjamin Read have fantastic imaginations!

Rasant, spannend, witzig – Emily ist wieder in der Mitternachtsstunde unterwegs – ein magisches Abenteuer

Schon wieder muss Emily die Mitternachtsstunde retten. Immer mehr Gegenstände von der „normalen“ Welt gelangen neuerdings in die Mitternachtsstunde. Dies ist ein Problem, dadurch die Magie verloren geht und damit die ganze Mitternachtsstunde ebenso. „Bibliothek“ bittet Emily, die magische Welt erneut zu retten. Und so schlittert sie schon wieder in ein gefährliches, magisches Abenteuer. Dabei trifft sie auf ihre sehr große Pucá-Familie. Doch das ist kein freudestrahlendes Treffen, Emily wird erst einmal angefeindet und abgelehnt. Sie muss sich behaupten, um dazuzugehören. Ob ihr das gelingt? Schließlich steht sie noch ganz am Anfang ihrer Pucá-Laufbahn und kann sich bisher nur in einen Hasen verwandeln und so ein kleines bisschen auch in einen niedlichen Hund. Also weit entfernt von den großen, machtvollen Wesen, in die sich Pucá normalerweise verwandeln. Immer an Emily Seite: ihr guter Freund Tarkus, der Mitternachtspolizist, der ihr eine große Hilfe ist. Und natürlich ihr Igel Hoggins – ist er nun magisch, oder nicht?

Die Welt, die die beiden Autoren mit der Mitternachtsstunde geschaffen haben, ist einfach großartig. Es wimmelt dort nur so vor den verschiedensten magischen Wesen, manche harmlos und nett, andere gefährlich und düster. Und mittendrin Emily mit ihrer großen Klappe, die sie oftmals nicht im Zaum halten kann und ihrer überaus pfiffigen Art, das Leben und dessen Probleme anzupacken. Sie ist mutig und lebensfroh und ein bisschen rebellisch, hat aber das Herz am rechten Fleck, ist hilfsbereit und sehr witzig. Eine tolle Mischung, die gute Unterhaltung verspricht. Und so ist es auch. Es geht sehr rasant zu in diesem 2. Teil und durch den wunderbar athmosphärischen Schreibstil, der mich die Personen und Schauplätze bildhaft erleben lies (Kopfkino pur), konnte ich mich perfekt in die Geschichte hineinversetzen. Auch musste ich oft lachen und schmunzeln – Emilys Humor ist großartig und in Tarkus hat sie einen Freund, der dem in nichts nachsteht. Der Schlagabtausch zwischen den beiden ist so amüsant und liebenswert.

Schön finde ich, dass Emily im Vergleich zu Teil 1 eine Entwicklung erlebt hat. Sie „wächst“ also mit, was gut bei mir ankommt. Das Ende ist mächtig spannend und ich war wirklich gefesselt, was sicher auch an dem Spannungsbogen lag, der sich durch das ganze Buch zieht.

Spannung, Abenteuer, Magie und viel Humor und Spaß – eine tolle Mischung und daher vergebe ich gerne die volle Punktzahl. Ich bin sehr gespannt auf Teil 3. Da bekommt Emily ein Brüderchen, der zum Ende dieses Teils in der Mitternachtsstunde geboren wird. Das verspricht noch richtig aufregend zu werden.

Mein achtjähriger Sohn hat dieser Fortsetzung schon entgegengefiebert und nach Weihnachten war es endlich so weit und er konnte seine Reise durch die Mitternachtsstunde fortführen.
Generell wird das Buch ja erst ab zehn Jahren empfohlen, jedoch liebt Paul die Geschichte. Doch da es ihm zum Selber lesen noch zu viel ist, lesen wir ihm die Geschichte vor. Wie schon im ersten Teil gibt es wieder die ein oder andere gruselige stelle, wie zum Beispiel ein Bär mit Rachegelüsten, den wie ja schon kennen. Daher empfehle ich das Buch frühestens ab acht Jahren.
Die Story ist wieder richtig genial und wir lernen nun auch wieder neue Charaktere kennen, darunter auch welche, die zu Emilys Familie gehören.
Auch an der Spannung im Buch mangelt es nicht, denn die Mitternachtsstunde ist wieder in Gefahr und Emily sieht sich in der Pflicht etwas zu unternehmen.
Während Sie in der Mitternachtsstunde unterwegs ist und ermittelt, passieren dazu noch komische Dinge wie zum Beispiel, dass Staturen und Wandteppiche zum Leben erwachen, so scheint es. Und dann ist da noch das Hauptsächliche Problem- ein wanderndes Loch in die normale Welt.
Wirklich vom Anfang bis zum ende spannend, immer einmal schaurig und zwischendurch richtig witzig - absolut empfehlenswert.

Emily's gob is wanting to burst out again.
She's been Hour-grounded since her Mam became pregnant. She was nearly there with her hound transformation too, it's so unfair. Since finding out she was half Pooka and saving the world you'd think she'd be given a smidgeon of trust.
Her Dad talks her Mum around but there are conditions....

Emily returns to the Midnight Hour, the Victorian night of Magic stuck in time so magic and it's beings can remain safe.

She should be practicing but it's not her fault something happens, and then... Well you can guess the trouble Emily might get in with her gob and haywire Pooka powers.

Grabbing her flowery Inspector friend, Tarkus it looks like Emily is going to be sent on another madcap adventure again. Just as well she took Hoggins, her hungry pocket hedgepig.

This is such great fun to read and imagine. I loved the witty characters and giggled at the hilarious family interactions. I especially loved book alley and was pleased the entertaining Library made a show. For any ages who love mayhem and magic in their adventures.

This is a sequel book of midnight hours which is a middle grade fantasy book. Yesh you are going to say another fantasy magical middle grade book 📖, karam?
Well yes.

Emily must battle her enemy which she faced in book 1 the midnight hours. She need to prevent the magic to sweep in to the real human world 🌎 She gets to learn some of the most painful moments like her birth rights and her very new identity. The only reason why i gave it 4 stars 🌟 because there was not much magical world building in this book. Understanding some of the elements was tough. Nevertheless i loved the 👻 spooky monsters creatures.

Equally as good as the first book, The Midnight Hour. I couldn't stop reading it as like The Midnight Hour, it is full of spirit, friendship and determination. The Midnight Howl by Benjamin Read and Laura Trinder is a fun read full of excitement and action with the occasional mystery and it also has a wonderfully magical sprinkle of warmth kneaded into the pages like a dusting of icing sugar on top of a Victoria Sponge. I would recommend this book for readers above the age of 9/ 10 as it is truly amazing and enchanted. I loved laying on my bed every night and getting lost in the magical world of the Midnight Hour…

Reading this brought me so much delight! This just oozes magic, charm, wit and adventure. Going back to the Midnight Hour and being back with these characters was such a delight! There’s so much action filled in this book that I didn’t want to put it down. What happens when there’s a big Hole that is zapping all the magic and a once-thought-dead enemy is coming back?! Well obviously it’s down to brilliant Emily (who’s battling against being unwelcome in her family clan, becoming a big sister and being grounded) to save the day!

... second book syndrom? The plot wasn't as captivating as the first book imo, although I love the world in this series! And Emily is such a great character 💜
I don't know if it is due to the French translation, but the dialogs were soooo cringy (I don't remember this being the case for book 1), which is my biggest issue with this book because it kept taking me out of the story.

Ein gelungener zweiter Teil mit Charme, Humor und sympathischen Figuren. Der Feind bleibt zwar der gleiche, wohl auch im kommenden Band, aber das ist bisher absolut glaubhaft und überzeugend dargestellt. Man lernt etwas mehr Emilys Familie kennen und wie man am besten mit dieser umgeht. Es gibt neue magische Elemente. Mir gefällt, wie man mit den Figuren miträtseln kann, es gibt schon früh Hinweise auf die ein und andere Entwicklung.

Rating to be determined. I admit, I probably will have to revisit this one. It's so strange, It's not like it didn't capture my attention while I multitask, but I definitely failed to capture its story arc. I don't think rating it now would be fair because it felt like a 3 (for 3.56~4), and it likely deserved more, because I took the time to actually make highlights (which I haven't done, for the past couple of books from other series I've read).

I can’t believe it’s been nearly 3 years since I read this first installment of this series, because I can still remember it really well, but I’ve been saving this (which is the second book of the Midnight Hour trilogy) for this post for a while now, and I was very excited indeed to finally pick it up. It continues the story of Emily, and it follows her venturing back into the world of the Midnight Hour to try and find out why magic is leaking out of it, amidst dealing with her slightly shady Pooka relatives, parents who are definitely not keen on her risking her life to save the world (again), and getting a grip on her malfunctioning shape shifting powers. Emily is a fantastic main character and I loved her even more this time round. Her gob made me laugh so much, I love her relationship with her lovely pet hedgehog (who may or may not be magical), and she’s so plucky and determined even when things go wrong. Her Pooka abilities are another element of both her and the book that I love, and I was once again enchanted by the worldbuilding of the Midnight Hour. The Nocturne remained a terrifying villain, I still love the Library and Tarkus, Emily’s mum was just hilarious and it was so cool to get to meet Art in this installment too. The mystery element of the plot was really exciting and fun, and I’m very much looking forward to reading the next one. I definitely won’t take me anywhere as long to pick up book 3 because I was very kindly sent a copy by the publisher and I’m so excited to get to it after the coda of this.

An improvement on pacing and a couple of issues I had with the first book. Really enjoyed this one, possibly even funnier; I certainly had a good laugh to myself even now and then.

Also, I've been searching for this book for a good few months, so it's great I've gotten to read it and can now move on to the final book very soon, since I already own that one.

This was excellent sequel and I really enjoyed the audiobook. I'm hoping more sequels to this series because I want to learn more about the magic system and how the magical world works. I don't think this book had enough world building and that's why I can only give this story four stars.

When you've saved the world, shouldn't it just stay saved? Unfortunately this isn't always the case, and the Library has another mission for Emily. She'll somehow have to get past being epically grounded and still find a way to save the Midnight Hour.

J'ai vraiment adoré du début à la fin, je n'ai pas encore acheté le dernier alors je vais rester un peu dans le suspense, j'ai hâte de voir ce qu'il va se passer et comment ça va se finir.
Mais dans celui là, il y a vraiment eu de l'action, du suspense et vraiment c'était très entraînant !!
