An interesting and thorough book, but it is mistitled. it should be titled The History of Buddhism, because it reads much more like a short textbook on the origin of the Buddha, his Enlightenment, and how practicing Buddhism spread throughout the world, than a guide on learning about Buddhism the practice and how to understand and apply its teachings.
Book rich with information on Buddhism. It's not all encompassing but a nice little primer on Gautam Buddha, his life journey and teachings. There's even an appendix which has writings from letters and interview with the Dalai Lama.
Like Buddhism (and life) itself, it is hard not to like this book and hard not to complain about it. It is supposed to be a dispassionate book at Buddhist history and thought, but the apparent devotion of the writer comes through. You will find nothing critical or questioning in this book. It is a presentation of mainstream Buddhist beliefs. Having registered these complaints, the book is presented very well but would benefit from a skeptical tone even if that is just confined to a final chapter, but the devout look is not without interest.
Fairly informative. But pretty repetitive. I was looking for a book on Buddhism. This was more a life story of Buddha (it was repeated thrice throughout the roughly 200 page book). If you're looking for a history book, maybe this is it. If you're looking for a guide to Buddhism, this isn't the best fit.
I picked this up for 50 cents at a book fair mostly for the beautiful artwork inside. The text is a bit dry but has some useful information. I was curious about the meaning of the hand positions of Buddha images and was delighted to find it here.
