By way of technological preamble, I found this manga series on Crunchyroll after watching the 13 extant episodes of the anime series, which turn out to follow the first 7 volumes of the manga very closely. I am new to streaming services, so this was my first venture out of the anime side into their e-manga stash. The series does not appear to be available in English translation on paper at this time.

Lovely clean artwork, and my first (though I suspect not last) encounter with manga in full color, something the new medium makes economically possible. It was brilliant, in both senses, on my Android tablet.

I'd call it science fantasy meets slice-of-life. 27-year-old underemployed down-on-his-luck dude is recruited to be an experimental subject for one year to return to high school (with a magic pill that allows him to look 17 again, though really, between 17 and 27 is not that much difference) and be observed in how he fares. We meet his classmates, teachers, and the ReLIFE observer-handlers; the set-up gives a grand excuse for a plot that mainly involves, as someone I knew once described such things, as "running around taking one another's emotional temperatures". I found it utterly charming, though I admit it took a while to build.

Volume 7 ends on a cliffhanger, argh. I hope there will be more volumes along soon; the story is only about a third through the promised year. We are only beginning to get down to everyone's angsty backstories at this stage, and I really want to know more about support-handler Ryo. Also the adorkable love-interest girl with no emotional skills, though that appears to be coming up in Volume 8.

(Also, just fyi, 27 is not "an old man". 27 is an infant.)

Ta, L.

Much later: Crunchyroll has provided the last episodes including a final 4-episode conclusion, coming to a pretty satisfactory finale that, with some contortions, did not betray its setup. So, still recommended.

You should read this if you like: slice of life stories, high school setting, struggles students face about studies, careers, etc., societal pressure, bonds of friendship, slow burn romances, trauma, mental health, suicide, self identity, pressure of conformity, struggles with adulthood, regrets, failures, second chances, and healing.

Reading ReLIFE was such a transformative experience. Very rarely do mangas, or any story, manage to satisfactorily cover all the above themes while still managing to be a deeply introspective experience. It made me take a look at my current life, flashback to high school days and simpler times. At the end of it, it even made me believe that current things really weren't so bad after all. I feel rejuvenated after reading this, almost as if I had undergone the ReLife experiment myself.

“School isn't just about studying. It's also a place where one can earn all the various skills necessary to live in a society. At least that's what i think now that I’ve become an adult...Whether they’re adults or kids, nothing really changes.”

ReLife follows the story of 27 year old Arata Kaizaki. Following an incident which forced him to quit his first job after only 3 months Arata is unemployed and deemed a failure by society. Depressed by his failures Arata lives a morose, hopeless kind of existence. Until he encounters a mysterious man, Ryō Yoake, who makes him a very curious proposition. Arata is asked to be a subject for the ReLife experiment aimed at rehabilitating people to once again become productive members of society. The only catch is that participation in the experiment means that the subjects are sent back to high school for a year!

Lured by the promise of full time employment, Arata agrees to the terms determined to quietly coast through high school. But he soon becomes embroiled in the lives of his fellow students and starts to actively correct his past mistakes.

One of my favorite things about this manga are its characters. Character interactions within ReLife are not just narrative devices to drive the story along. But rather, they all contribute something towards Arata's personal growth even as Arata influences them to be better adults. Each character that Arata interacts with is written very vividly. They are all individuals with their distinct personalities, backstories, likes and dislikes, ambitions, fears, etc. Each of the cast of characters undergoes their own mini arcs within the larger story.

The school setting also plays a very important role as it serves to highlight different issues these characters are faced with. Everything from tests/exams, to issues about identity, college, future careers, friendships, love, pressure, dreams, goals, etc. is wonderfully tackled under a layer of humor, romance, and mystery. The storytelling never felt contrived or like a series of cliched tropes tacked one on top of the other. It felt very sincere, that much more impactful for the way its written. 4.5 stars.

P.S. because this is a manga set in high school, there is still a lot of romance to go around. But it's a relatively slow burn romance with some solid foundation in friendship. Its sweet, angsty, and oh so delicious! So if you are here just for the romance you won’t regret it.

Aaah, that was quite a ride. And I'm so happy that I decided to finish this manga in one weekend, the story is so heartwarming it gives me the right boost to face Monday!
First, let me get a little philosophical here; the main reason that I pick up ReLIFE is that because I do too am a believer of what I'd like to call A Highschool Effect. More than my time when I was at university, many of my personality traits I possess now coming from my experiences around the age of 16 to 18 years old—that was the time I started to search for an identity. The identity that as I'm getting older (along with all the hardships, growing pain, and other ordeals that I face) finally making me who I am today.
Now into the story! I already mentioned how I appreciate the uniqueness of the premise of ReLIFE on my initial review.
Sure, a story about second chance isn't something new, but the way Yayoiso-sensei present this story in a box with a pretty bow to us is just beyond amazing. It's pleasant, exhilarating, heartening, inspiring, cheering, encouraging, and yes, please give me more adjectives about how this story gives me so much joy.
Also, the slow burn romance is top-notch! Complete with multiple ships who bickering all the time, the opposite attract arc, and amazing friendship parable.
So my final verdict is, if you're into manga then this is the one manga you just have to read at least once in a lifetime!
The story is perfect, the art is also very enjoyable to look at. Do you really still need me to persuade you any longer?

17 July '20:
Soooo I've been really into manga lately (before, I almost exclusively only enjoying many of the stories through anime medium) and as probably lots of people would agree ReLIFE is THAT one manga you must read, it's very well acclaimed!
To those who wonder what's the story of ReLIFE is about, it's about a 27 years old man who chosen as a research subject where they try to rehabilitate a NEET (an acronym for "Not in Education, Employment, or Training") back into a fully functional human socially by giving the subject a pill that will transform them back into a highschooler—expect the shenanigans to occur and thus giving them a chance to refind their purpose in life and, in the end, restarting their life. I KNOW, IT'S A CRAZY GOOD PLOT.

*Review based on part of the series (ch. 1-144) since it is still ongoing

Before my fall semester began this year, I had a fabulous one day anime marathon of ReLife (because for some unknown reason the entire season was leaked by TMS Entertainment in one night). I had such a fun time with the show that I immediately had to do some research and find the webtoon to further indulge in the engaging storyline. And, no surprise, I found the manga to be even better!

ReLife follows the story of 27 year old Arata Kaizaki, a guy that can't find a job after leaving his first employer after only three months (apparently the lack of commitment is really bad and most corporate companies are too skeptical to give him a callback because of that). Then he meets Ryou Yoake who offers Arata a second chance through a program called ReLife. ReLife is designed to reintroduce NEETs back into society by physically transforming them (via a pill) into their youthful forms and returning them back into high school, where the company believes the root of many NEETs' problems began, for one year. During the experiment, all the subject's expenses are covered, and he/she actually attends a real high school with real young students. At the end of the one year program, all evidence of the subject's existence will be erased from his/her peers' memories. The only catch is that the subjects are not allowed to talk about the company, program, or process; and if they do, the experiment will end and the subject's memory will be erased.

The plot is very unique. And I appreciated that it's essentially not just another story set in high school. There's some teenage drama but a lot of the conflicts have more mature themes that really apply to life in general and inclusive to those of all ages.

The cast is also very relatable with their many insecurities and vulnerabilities.

My favorite character was the female lead, Chizuru Hishiro. At first, I was skeptical of her personality because she was yet another clueless, detached heroine that didn't know anything about friends, relationships, and love.

However, though aloof, she doesn't come on as annoying (as other characters with her personality type that I've encountered previously in the anime/manga world) in the slightest. Of course, she doesn't make the best decisions, but she's constantly trying her hardest to better herself in a way different from our main protagonist, Arata. She's unpredictable, earnest in her actions, and possesses a hardworking attitude. Character development and evolvement is a common reoccurrence for almost all of the characters in Relife.

As how the anime was highlighted, ReLife introduces some important themes about life, but it's overall more of a slice of life that relies on humor. I was cracking up so hard at the many comedic scenes; the familiar antics between the charming characters never got old. (The scene above isn't as funny since it's out of context but I didn't want to include any spoilery gifs. This encounter shows just how bad Chizuru is with making friends. That's her trying to "smile" and being friendly.)

Also, after 13 episodes and almost 150 chapters I've totally become an Arata and Chizuru shipper. Of course, the passion meter is nowhere near my Khalid/Shazi ship... but the former's relationship is so awkward, but refreshingly pure and delicate. (Arata/Chizuru may be the couple that will finally cure my reading hangover/slump after The Wrath and the Dawn duology.)

As expected of a webtoon, the art is super vibrant and crisp. I absolutely adore that at the end of each chapter Sou Yayoi includes a quick chibi sketch of a humorous or cheesy scene. Those were such perfect touches.

In all, I thought Relife was a series that went beyond my expectations; it's much better than how it was first advertised (with the anime). I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. By the end (or where the webtoon has left off so far), I really grew attached to the characters and the storyline remained addicting. I'm looking forward to the future chapters as this series is updated; and I'm hoping that the webtoon will be officially published in English in the States (so I can go out and buy it). Anyway, this one goes highly recommended from me!

Actual rating: 4.5 stars

Note: As Goodreads has Volumes 1 to 5 mentioned, and there are 150 chapters in ReLIFE, I'll be reviewing 30 chapters per volume. (Math, people. Math!)

So I don't generally read manga much (I much prefer watching the anime) so I guess this would be my first manga (I've read a couple of chapters of Kuroshitsuji and a few of Kuroko no Basuke, but then again I went and watched the anime so they don't count). ReLIFE was actually a great read! The art style is a bit simple and straightforward, but the storyline so far, the characters and the humour are all perfectly lovable. Onwards to Chapter 31!

Bisa dibaca (gratis*) di sini! ☜(°

My life is so similar Arata Kaizaki aka the protagonist of Relife. Although there is a little age difference but all stuff he is going through in his real life, I am sailing in the same boat. His character is so similar to mine. I really can feel what he is going through. This manga is based on very original idea. Loved the first volume.

Waooww... Akhirnya saya bisa baca komik ini juga^,,,^)/ Sudah lama banget carving for this manga. Ok, first thing first:

Mari kita bahas dari segi fisik dulu. Saya beli komik ini di Gramedia (stoknya masih bejibun padahal komiknya bagus lahir-batin) seharga 72rb. Dengan cover photo yg agak tebal, all-180s-full-color pages, serta kualitas kertas dan cetakan yg bagus, saya rasa harganya quite worth-it (asal ga naik tiap tahun ajaa). Sedangkan untuk jenis font, well,, karena saya biasa baca komik yg jenis fontnya berbeda menyesuaikan situasi (which is really good), membaca komik ini awalnya terasa agak nggak 'klik' karena jenis fontnya sama semua. Mungkin cuma pas suara orang emosi aja jenis fontnya agak beda. Tapi setelah baca sampai chapter 3an, I got used to it sehingga bisa enjoy aja. FYI, dalam satu volume ini ada 19 chapters ditambah bonus Report yg menceritakan kegiatan Kaezaki setelah teken kontrak ReLIFE tapi sebelum masuk SMU ^ω^). Artwork & coloring, semuanya bagus & rapi d(^○^)b

Even so, there're always rooms for improvement, aren't they?

Saya udah baca sampe chapter 5 kok biasa aja?? Overrated kali yaa??'. Tapi jangan menghakimi dulu. Ini komik nggak overrated kok. Baca saja komiknya dulu sampai habis. Dan kalo anda merasa ceritanya jadi makin bagus,, jangan khawatir,, semakin jauh, ceritanya akan makin bagus, kocak, menyentuh, inspiring, seru, ngocol, bikin gemes, greget lahh pokoknya♡♡ A whole new level of manga.

---------------
Selanjutnyaa,, some greget lines:

The ReLife experiment gives you the ability to redo a part of your life after a critical setback. You get paid but you have to hide this secret from the rest of the world. ReLife is one of those webtoons that leaves you invigorated. It is a slice-of-life story that gives important implications about relationships and living in the present moment.

Our main character is a 27-year-old unemployed Arata Kaizaki. He is given the opportunity to embark on the ReLife experiment after a traumatic event from his past leaves him mentally crippled. Albeit the experiment does sound a little creepy and its consequences are even more so, but it isn’t as cliched as it sounds. He joins a prestigious high school and makes friends along the way who teach him valuable lessons about life. One of my favorite aspects of this work is Sou Yayoi’s beautiful artwork. The drawings are immaculate and the mirage of colors illustrates extraordinary talent. But you should start this webtoon for the comedy if for nothing else. There are many comical moments that are well done and made me laugh unexpectedly!

My favorite characters are of course the two main characters, Arata Kaizaki and Chizuru Hishiro. Initially Arata thinks he can speed through the experiment with as little involvement as possible, but his gradual transformation brings with it important lessons that we can all incorporate into our own lives: learning to cherish friendships in the same way that we cherish favorite pastimes and enjoying the present moment before looking out into the horizon towards the future. On the other hand, it takes a little more time to warm up to Chizuru but you come to fully appreciate her once you understand the depth of her character. She has lived her whole life in independence, but she learns that sometimes independence can have unfortunate consequences. Cooperation is the biggest hurdle she has to overcome.

So, this isn’t finished yet...it’s currently on chapter 152 and I honestly don’t know when it will be completed. But, I’m not anticipating anytime soon and if you enjoy realistic comics that give you happy feels and hope that there is more to life than a series of unfortunate events, then I highly recommend it! At least try the first few chapters and see how it goes.

I just finished watching the ReLIFE anime yesterday, and it is honestly one of my favorite animes to date (albeit, I haven't watched that many). It has such loveable characters, an amazing soundtrack, was jam-packed with emotions, was stupidly hilarious (really though, it had no right to be that funny), and was the perfect medicine to ease my current aches from missing my high school experience. Overall, it was such a great anime, and I can't help to recommend it.

Anyways, that leads me to this review of the manga. When I heard online that the manga was better and had much more content and character development, I immediately knew I had to read this. I was surprised to find out that the anime crammed over 100 chapters into just four episodes, and the anime cut so much character development. So yes, I have no shame in admitting I found ways to read the manga the second I finished the anime (it is a shame that there are no physical English copies available, but the fan-translated ones are still great). As for the manga, just as I expected, the first volume was just as hilarious as the anime and had amazing artwork (and in color too!). The first volume is such a great start to the series, and I am sure I'll be a crying mess by the last one. I am so excited to get a more in-depth look at this story and how it pans out.

Kaizaki, the protagonist of ReLIFE is a 27-year-old unemployed man who one day meets Yaoke, who ensures him a job contract after a year, but for that Kaizaki has to participate in a strange experiment that requires him to turn into a high school student with the help of a pill. And that's how his 28th year begins, in 3rd year of high school with students 10 years younger than him (shhh, nobody knows yet!).

The first volume presents us with the protagonist Kaizuki (obviously), Yaoke who might end up being his best friend further in the manga, some of Kaizuki's classmates and Hishiro, perhaps his love interest. Kaizuki's character seemed to be rather fun to read, and I can see him getting attached to Hishiro soon. The scene where he pats Hishiro's head was so cute, honestly! I love it when two quiet people come together in mangas, and I bet this couple is going to make my heart flutter too.

3-3.5/5

I am not entirely sure what to think of this yet after the first 19 chapters/reports. The English translation I'm reading online is, at times, Not Great, making it difficult to stay in the story, and I am having trouble with figuring out what it is Yoake wants Kaizaki to do, as he seems to be contradicting himself a lot. And I can't tell if that's the story or the translation.

Also feeling kind of uncomfortable with there being a love interest, haha!

Either way, I might continue this, but I also might not. I haven't yet decided. At least it'd be a fast read!

I wanted to check this out for a while and now that I did, I am definitely not disappointed. Will definitely continue this soon - in fact, I aim to read the whole webcomic, really curious about what's next. It's great to see it bringing awareness on important topics like depression and life struggles. The concept is quite original as well and the artwork is quite fun.
