When a woman running scared runs into the arms of a sexy cowboy, she might lose her fear, but will she also lose her heart?
When a woman on the run hits a town right out of the Wild West, the first cowboy she meets sets his sights on her. Alone, scared, and starting over, Susan will have to decide if the big, bad Russell Ryland, retired Navy SEAL, now rancher, is for real or just using up his down time between missions.
Russell takes one look at the smiling, blue-eyed beauty and realises there's a heck of a lot more after retirement than he'd thought. As he begins to dream of a life with Susan, he fights an unfamiliar battle within himself-doubt. Does she want him, or is she merely out for some fun?
Time for the reluctant couple nearly runs out when the very men Susan is hiding from come to call. Will Russell wake up quickly enough to save her? Or will their doubts get them both killed?
Well, let's see. I write romance -- mostly paranormal and historical, but I have a few contemporary I'm working on as well. I tend to write series, but slowly. So, if you liked Midnight Star, I have more coming out soon.
I also work on single stories, and one of those might be hitting the shelves soon as well.
I grew up here, there, and everywhere, from California, to upstate New York to just about everywhere in between. I think the moving around drove me to find my own outlets in life -- reading being one of them, and writing being another. I hope that my work is enjoyable to my readers, and some day I'd love to hear from a fan that they have my book stored all safe and secure on a shelf where they can pet it when they want. :) Or that they pull my book down on a bad day to simply escape for a bit into the worlds I spin.
This book starts off reminding me of a classic Linda Howard romantic suspense, but it begins to go down the crapper pretty quickly.
Lacey/Susan (let's call her Lazy Susan) is presented to us as a structural engineer and yet she cannot install a door lock, and seems entirely flummoxed by the mechanics of it; and Russell (let's call him Big Alpha) is outraged at the concept of Lazy Susan purchasing/using/having knowledge of power tools of any kind.
Naturally she is the most beautiful woman in the world--and a virgin (BUT NOT FOR LONG). Big Alpha eliminates that hymen toute suite and they have sex for an entire day during which she orgasms approximately 900 times.
I kept waiting for the author to reveal to us that Lazy Susan had time-traveled here from 1958, to explain why she says things to Big Alpha like "you're so bad" (coy slap to his manly chest is implied) and "don't swear so much" (which made me go back and look for the swear words because they were so mild and/or infrequent). I for damn sure swear more than this fucking guy.
I read some great reviews for this books, and thought why not? I mean, there's a damsel in distress, an ex-Navy SEAL who is now a cowboy... It sounds delicious. Unfortunately it didn't deliver.
Lacey is in a lot of trouble. She witnessed a mob hit and is now in hiding. Not that it went well the last time. Four agents were killed when her cover was blown and she ended up in coma. That's how she found herself in a small town in a middle of nowhere. Her first day there she meets Russell Ryland. He is exactly her type, if only the timing is better.
Russell is enchanted by Lacey. She is everything he always wanted. Of course she doesn't seem to want to get involved, but he can convince her.
You know there's a difference between an alpha male bent on protection, and a guy with sex on his mind and some serious issues with control. I mean, nothing about him actually said protective, more insulting with his I've got to protect the silly little woman from hurting herself. He annoyed me to no end.
Lacey is better, but not much. I simply don't get that woman. Some of her thought process is totally beyond me.
Now, there were some good moments, and I did get through the book and even somewhat enjoyed it, but like I said some serious issues.
And I can't believe I'm saying this, but there was simply too much sex scenes. I was skimming them before I even got to the half of the book. Their answer to every problem: "Lets have sex and forget about everything else!" It gets old.
I did like Russell's SEAL buddies, and if the author writes their books I might be tempted to read them. That's all I can really say.
I decided to give this book a chance after reading so many of the four and five star reviews the novel garnered. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to disagree with their assessment as my take on it was completely different from theirs.
The two protagonists at the heart of the story is Russell (former Navy SEAL), and Susan (real name Lacey) who’s in hiding from the Russian mob. This was a good story. It’s just too bad it reads like a novella. Sure it says “369” pages, but instead of writing an in-depth story of what was outlined in the synopsis, the author gives the readers pages upon pages, chapters upon chapters of Russell and Susan having sex. Lots and lots and lots of sex. Don’t get me wrong, the sex is quite hot and sizzling, but holy crap! 60% (if not more) of the novel is just about them going at it like rabbits. Who’s kidding who? The rabbits were taking lessons from them. There’s so much sex it eventually became boring and redundant. Like many others I love well-written, sizzling, scorching hot sexcapades, but there’s only so much I can take. After a while I found myself quickly skimming thru it, eventually skipping pages altogether. Could you blame me? Hell, I lost count of the number of times Susan yelled “Oh.”
“Oh, Russell, oh my God!” “Russell! Oh, oh my God, Russell! “Russell, oh, God, oh, my God.” “Russell…oh…oh…Russell!” “Oh my God, yes. God, Russell!” “Oh, Russell, that feels so good,” “Oh, Russell, there. Oh, there.” “Oh, God…so good… Don’t stop, Russell, don’t stop.”
You get the picture. Now I’ve heard of alpha males who’ve had long lasting hard-ons. However, this alpha male takes the cake as he’s got a hard-on 24/7 (no joke). Even after he’s had one, two, and even three orgasms, he’s still hard. He would have to be given that Susan was having orgasms in the double-digits in just one day.
The story is told from several POV’s which I love. However, it was a little hard at times to figure out exactly whose POV I was reading as it switched back and forth between Susan and Russell without any markings, title, name, or new chapter to indicate the switch. At one point I’m reading the assassin’s POV and in the blink-of-an-eye it switched to Susan’s.
There were some factors of the novel that didn’t make any sense to me. Susan’s a structural engineer, so why does she have such a problem installing a lock correctly? She even had it upside down. Hello?? To be qualified as a structural engineer she would’ve had to have been a college graduate which means she worked as a structural engineer before she went into hiding. If that’s the case, why would the FBI allow her to work in the exact same capacity when they’re trying to hide her? Also, it’s hard to believe that the FBI would place her in Troy, Montana, home to a couple of former Navy SEALS, as they’d have done their research to make sure she was completely safe and her identity secured, especially when her own father was a retired Navy SEAL who trained others.
I’d like to know exactly how the assassin located Susan. Who told him? How did he know where she worked? Once he knew where she lived, why did he wait weeks and weeks to kill her when she was alone? Instead he waits for Russell to return home before he starts shooting.
Now I may have not enjoyed this novel all that much, but I’m not going to tell you to read it or not. I’ll just leave it up your discretion. Will I read book 2? I’m going to have to say thanks, but no thanks.

Running Scared was my first book by Billi Jean. She will be on my auto by list!! This was a great Navy SEAL book full of snarky humor, smoking hot sex, and some action!!! Who doesn’t love hot SEALS? Throw in the daughter of the former trainer and the most badass SEAL of all times, and you have the makings of a great book!!!
Lacey Fletcher is in unfamiliar territory. She is in Witness Protection, and on the run from the Russian mob, due to the fact that she witnessed the murder of a young girl outside a night club. She has to leave behind everything and everyone she knows even her name. Now she is Susan, and living in Troy, Montana away from the beaches she loves. The mountains are the last place she wants to be, until she meets her sexy neighbor Russell Ryland, retired Navy SEAL. To say sparks fly between these two is a major understatement. They both have an instant attraction, but also Lacey has a fire that keeps him on his toes and draws him as much as her sexiness. Will she give into the desires he stirs up, and can she trust him with the secrets she carries??
Russell is having a hard time adjusting to retirement, so he still helps his friends out doing freelance security jobs. He just gets back from a big mission in Columbia, when on the road home he meets up with a woman that sets his libido and heart on fire. He realizes this is different than the normal post mission hookup. She speaks to a deeper part of him. He has to get past her fears, and get her to see that he is not a typical SEAL. He has to show her he is not out to just f**k around, but that he wants to make her his.
I loved everything about this book!!! I laughed out loud literally, and lawd was it smoking hot!!! Once these two start burning up the sheets, they burn up the SHEETS! Not to mention the walls and kitchen cabinets!! I highly recommend this one! Get a fan, a man, and or some batteries for this one!! Hehehehehe!!!
OMG! I just finished this book... can I find this man somewhere. This one was so good that I will be re-reading this weekend. Strong alpha male all the important features, tall, strong, intense, former Navy SEAL and a rancher! The female was strong but willing to show that she needed someone in her life.
The book also sets up for feature books in series ( I can't wait! Billi get to writing) I am ready looking for forward to the Dare (Shemar Moore Ladies! Wink! Wink!)
Lacey and Russell make one hot couple. Love the action, passion and suspense in this one, and want more from this world of Navy Seals, the women who love them, the adventure, danger, and fast paced action. The heat in this could melt walls, and the sassy dialog and humor are great balances for the edge of your seat suspense and dangerous situations these folks find themselves in. the characters are well crafted, the world is detailed and believable, and the friendships are a delight. I love the strenghthof both main characters, and their determination. This one kept me reading long after bedtime, and I wanted more the minute I was done. Please, billi, I want much more from this world.
There's only been a few times since I started reviewing about 5 years ago where I've complained about TOO MUCH SEX. This is one of those times.
Lacey hates Troy, Montana. She hates her new government issued name, Susan. And she hates that the first man she's met in town has the power to render her speechless at a glance. After witnessing a mob hit, the subsequent fallout has her on the run from some seriously bad dudes. Her heart stops when she meets Russell Ryland, the big bad former Navy SEAL, upon arriving in her new town. The second Russell lays eyes on Susan, his heart started pounding and he became a tongue tied, bumbling teenager. His desire for her is all-consuming, to the point of obsession. He must have her, claim her, mark her, own her. But when it seems that Lacey's past has caught up with her, he'll have to figure out just why they're both in danger since his woman isn't exactly sharing her secrets.
RUNNING SCARED is the first book in Ms. Jean's Love's Command Series, and having read a later book in this series first and LOVED it, I desperately wanted to love this one too. But maybe my expectations were just a little too high for the first book in a new series since there was very little about RUNNING SCARED that I can say I enjoyed. Unfortunately, the sheer amount of sex, while insanely erotic, simply took over the story. I'm sure that Ms. Jean wanted some level of action/adventure in RUNNING SCARED, but it really just turned into porn with a been there/done that plot. The sex scenes weren't just long, they were cheesy as hell, too. A quick search showed well over 200 instances of the word baby, and it was sprinkled liberally in bed. Witness these nuggets from ONE scene:
"Damn, baby, suck me. Show me again."
"Holy hell. Ah, fuck. Baby. Let me, baby?"
"Come on, baby, come with me."
"Ah, fuck, Susan, baby, God yeah, so good, so good. Open for me, baby."
"Ah, God, yeah, yeah. Come with me baby. Keep your eyes open. See me. See who's giving you this. Take it, baby, take it. For me. Give me this, Susan."
"Damn, damn baby."
"Baby."
In addition, Russell was obsessed with Susan to the point of being a bit creepy. They used sex to avoid having any sort of conversation, which would be just fine if this wasn't a HEA sort of book. I also thought it weird that they both had an addiction to smelling one another (we get it, she's sunshine, he's like meadow and man. Duly noted). Last but not least, I was very confused on why Ms. Jean used the Queen's English despite her being American and her story being set in Montana. Don't get me wrong, I love kerb's and manoeuvres as much as the next Anglophile, but in this case the language simply didn't add up. Add all of this to the "how does she feel about me?", "how does he feel about meeeee?", "Am I just a convenient fuck?", "Does she love me or the SEAL?" GAAH! Stop! Everything about this story just drove me insane with anger, which is a real shame since I really REALLY wanted to love this book. That said, I'm committed to the series at this point, so I'm hopeful that the writing will improve as the books continue. Fingers crossed!
Bottom Line: While this is an uninspired first book to kick off a series, later books are indeed very good, so those who don't like to leave a series unfinished may enjoy Russell and Susan/Lacey's story. - See more at: http://erotic.theromancereviews.com/v...
This book is HOT! Definitely on the smuttastic radar for me. Russell is definitely an alpha male. I got this rec from the Amazon discussion thread (thanks ladies!) and this definitely fits the possessive, protective, crazy in love hero.
I'm looking forward to reading Mac's and Mandy's story in Safe In His Arms.
The story really flowed with this book. It felt like a well-considered pice of writing with no awkward moments or silted dialog. No scene changes that left you confused or up in the air as to what was happening. The heroine is a smart women and doing her best in a situation out of her control. Having grown up in a military family she knows how to deal with an alpha male like Russel and doesn’t get pushed around by him. With really stong male characters heroines can end up looking like a doormat or really combative. Susan is neither she uses humor and an iron will to make sure Russel listens to her.
You get a good look into Russell’s head as well. Is there anything hotter than an alpha male tied up in knots by a girl who just doesn’t fall in his lap. He knows he wants Susan and will do anything to secure her if he only knew how to win her over. He will use every tactic he can think of to reach his objective. Of course they both bring baggage to the relationship which means it’s not smooth sailing.
When they do come together its steamy and detailed. You also get both of their perspectives during the love scenes. Providing insight that they are falling in love as they fall into bed.
Closer to the end of the book I did find there were a lot of coincidences which were kind of unbelievable. With out putting any spoilers in, mutual friends they didn’t know they had just pop into the picture. I can see the author is probably using this to introduce characters for future books. But it did seem a little much.Saying that I can't wait for the next installment in the series!

I feel a warning label should be attached to this review/book, hot alpha Navy Seals, read at home or carry spare panties. This book was super HOT. Lacey Fletcher the daughter of a Navy Seal is in trouble. She has been placed in Witness Protection after witnessing a Russian mob hit and is forced to move to the wilds of Montana. Attacked and thought dead, Lacey now Susan is scared and alone, her father has died and she feels like a fish out of water in this small Montana town. Things take a turn for the better when she happens to meet her new neighbor ex-Navy Seal, Russell Ryland. Susan keeps Russell on high alert out of the bedroom not allowing him to boss her around and Russell keeps Susan occupied with super hot sex. Is it love that will last or just a short lived fling can Russell keep her safe from those who want her dead? If you love Navy Seals and looking for a super sexy read full of suspense and laughter, I recommend diving into this great read. Hoping to hear more from this Seal Team in the future.
Very steamy story with frequent, sometimes long drawn out sex scenes. Perhaps too many? The flow is good, but there is quite a bit of what the mcs are feeling and thinking. The suspense storyline plays a minor part. The story just ends; no epi, nothing. I am looking forward to Mac and Mandy's book Safe In His Arms.
Lacey (Susan or Sara) is on the run from one incident that happened one night. Russ is an ExSeal that just wants more from life.
Parts of this story were really good though I felt things were rushed in areas and some things just to neatly tied in a bow. All in all though not a bad read.
WHEWWWW Super hot sexy book with all the Alpha male anyone could ask for. While hiding away in FBI protection "Susan" finds just what she needs to help move from the past. This was a super steamy romance that was well worth the read!!
Well not just your boy meets girl book .this book had a great plot ,but i found the ending was just cut off like the aurthor just got sick i wrighting and finnished
