Sandi's anchor of hope: A true story

Rate this book
Sandi's home was not broken. It was shattered. Repeatedly.Rejection, abuse, neglect, drunkenness, betrayal, upheaval -- all were part of Sandi's childhood. Her drunken, abusive mother paid more attention to the succession of immoral men in her life than to the yearnings of her children for love and security.

This true story tells not only about Sandi's sad childhood and confused teen years, but also about the answers she found in God. Sandi learned that where sin abounds, grace does much more abound.

Read her story and rejoice in the providence and grace of God. Read it and weep for the many in our society who are like her and have never met God.

What an amazing story..... there are so many devastating stories of shattered ,abusive families that innocent children have had to endure, that for those of us who were fortunate enough to have a "stable" or least loving parents were truly blessed. That poor child lost her eyesight in one eye at age four due to neglect. Her "mother", such as she was I suppose if you could call her that, told she was old enough to feed herself when a knife went into her eye.... Beatings and hunger, constantly moving as the mother flitted through men++.... thankfully she was able to encounter some kind and compassionate people who tried to help her and sister as they could. She came to know the Lord which as the title says, gave her an anchor in which she was finally loved and cared for, finding her purpose, joy and contentment. Powerful book.

The best stories of hope, courage, and/or healing are the true ones! I'm grateful to Mrs. Stauffer and "Sandi" for recording this testimony of God's deliverance.

The down side: I was sad for Sandi and her husband feeling guilt and shame after their conversion to the Mennonite church for having gone swimming together at a Christian summer camp the day they met and Sandi being ashamed of her "immodest" wedding photos to the point that she didn't want anyone to see them. Sandi and her husband were both Christians when they met and by all descriptions they were very upright and circumspect in their dating life. It truly didn't sound like they had anything to be ashamed of. But because it didn't line up with the accepted courtship/modesty model exemplified in their new church, they regretted those aspects of their life story, a story which God had clearly written for them.

I would eagerly recommend this book to all readers over the age of 13 for the overwhelming testimony of God's faithfulness and deliverance with the caution that it does contain descriptions of a violently abusive and broken home life (could be very triggering for an abuse survivor even though it's written carefully) and a gentle reminder to those struggling in their faith that salvation is not based on following a set of rules but found in a relationship with God, a God Who is kind, loving, patient, full of grace and mercy and forgiveness. I myself came from a background of legalism and I'm still trying to unlearn it. I think that's probably the reason this one minor point stood out to me. It just saddens me when a believer carries needless guilt for something God is not holding against them, either because He's already forgiven it or because He never had a problem with it in the first place. (Seriously though, the regrets/shame issue was a few paragraphs out of a 258 page book. Don't let that one honest insight to their maturing, learning hearts stop you from being blessed by this book!)

I found the book incredibly encouraging and inspiring. I read it over the course of one quiet afternoon/evening; I could hardly bring myself to put it down! There was one section on the doctrine of eternal security which shared some verses to explain the Mennonite view of the subject. I found these helpful, as this is a topic I've been trying to settle in my own heart since joining mainstream Christianity. I am inspired to keep pressing on toward the mark and to better create a loving, secure, Christian home for my husband and children through Jesus's strength.
