The acclaimed historical novel based on the amazing life of Harriet Tubman, legendary conductor on the Underground Railroad; A Literary Guild Alternate Selection: Made into a TV Movie, starring Cicely Tyson.
Harriet Tubman is one of those people I've known very little about. As a school child, I remember hearing about her as one of the conductors of the Underground Railroad, but that's about it. Heidish's historical fiction about Tubman was really my first complete introduction to the woman, and her novel inspired me to do more research on Tubman. This woman called Moses was born into slavery, but from the time she was a small child, she was a free spirit. Her first runaway attempt was at age 6; as a young teenager, she suffered a brain injury when someone threw an iron weight at her. As a result, she suffered from narcolepsy and severe headaches for the rest of her life. Before reading this novel, I was unaware of Tubman's connection to John Brown. I also learned more about the Underground Railroad. All in all, I think this is an excellent book to learn more about both Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
This was a very good historical novel. HARRIET TUBMAN led an amazing life and no one can question her great place in history. This was a well organized interesting story of her life. The fact that the author included parts about her being in Odessa and Warwick and other areas where I lived, made it more interesting to me. There was not a wasted page, every one was interesting to read.
This was a stunning portrayal not only of the efforts of Harriet Tubman to rescue a huge number of those held in bondage to slavery, but of the trials of slavery and the inhuman treatment by many slave holders. Beautifully crafted and researched. I understand it was fictionalized but there is much truth to this tale.
