Cree artist Neepin Auger, a member of the Bigstone Cree Nation of Alberta, Canada, presents this third trilingual board book, following upon her
Discovering Words
and
Discovering Numbers
. Here, twenty-two animals are depicted, with their names in English, French and Cree. The artwork is bright and vibrantly colorful, the animals all species one would expect to see in northern Canada. A pronunciation guide is provided for the French and Cree words, in a table at the rear.
I did wonder, with a few of the animals in Discovering Animals - insect and whale, for instance - why the general term was used, rather than the specific one - ladybug and orca - referring to the creature depicted in the artwork. Leaving that aside, this was a lovely little book, a perfect companion to the other two titles from Auger, which I now own, thanks to a generous gift from my friend GR friend Manybooks. Great thanks to her, for introducing me to these titles - I will have to get my act together and review the earlier two. Recommended to anyone who has enjoyed the earlier Auger titles, to anyone looking for Native-content baby books, and to those searching for multilingual word books.

There are three books in this series so far. Discovering Animals, Discovering Numbers, and Discovering words. There is a brightly coloured photo shown and then the word in English, French and Cree. These would make such a great addition to a child's personal library. I will think about these books in the future as baby shower gifts!
