Corse, 1850.
Atmospheric and suitably bloody 'Western' in mid 19th century Corsica. Strong on scenery and social mores (which I didn't know much about beyond the idea of the vendetta). Lots of shootin' and fightin' and pretty entertaining at a general level.
Where I struggled was piecing it all together - probably not following closely enough to satisfying work out why Orso and his brother weren't killed in the first place; what bearing being born of the witch had on things; how Rocco and assorted fellow bandits fitted in and...what it all amounted too. A similar reaction I get, in fact, when I watch movies and am so often left wondering 'Hang on - b ut why didn't he just shoot him?'. I dunno.
Good, adventure story setting and dynamics. But the dynastic stuff seems to have gone over my head. Must focus more.
