A humorous story about a girl who treats her beloved pet rabbit like a toy, until she experiences a vivid dream where their roles are reversed and the girl is now the pet of her giant bunny! This enlightening and entertaining tale by debut author-illustrator Yang Dong, told with charming illustrations, teaches children about the importance of treating animals with respect and allows children to practise their early literacy skills.
When a little girl receives a bunny as a birthday gift, she is delighted, taking her new leporine companion with her everywhere. Convinced that she is taking excellent care of her pet, she lists the many things she does for the bunny, from feeding her to washing her. Then one night she has a dream that she is the pet, and the bunny the caretaker. A little frightened, upon awakening, the girl reads the guide to bunny care she has been given, and realizes that she has been doing everything wrong...
Apparently the picture-book debut of Yang Dong, an expatriate Chinese author/artist living in the UK, Mine! is a cute little book, one that can be used to launch a discussion with very young children about the correct way to care for and interact with the animals in our charge. The text is simple - no more than a phrase per page - and the artwork sweet. I'm not sure, all told, that this one was entirely to my taste, aesthetically speaking - somehow, it was just a little too cute - but I think it will work quite well for the intended audience. Recommended to anyone looking for children's stories that can be used in humane education.
Pets are not toys, love is more complex than you think... Charmingly enthusiastic rabbit-loving girl discovers that real love means she has to look at a rabbit as a rabbit, not as an extension of its owner’s wishes. A deceptively deep book - not just for a girl who wants a rabbit!
