Action packed story of a hiker, Chey, lost in the woods. Chey is washed away by a flash flood and loses all of her hiking equipment in the process. If all of that isn't bad enough, she finds that she is being stalked by a pack of wolves. Six adult wolves to be exact.

description

Chey climbs a tree in order to survive, but becomes alarmed by an evil howl in the distance. A growl vicious enough to scare off six timber wolves. An evil werewolf approaches, intent on killing Chey. Except there is just one thing wrong. She recognizes it's distinctive green eyes, those eyes !

David Wellington spins an amazing werewolf tale full of deceit, action, and horror, as the hunter becomes the hunted. I was on the edge of my seat flipping pages like a madwoman. The plot is full of unexpected twists and surprises. I highly recommend this book to fans of werewolf horror, cause this is not a shifter romance.

Awesome. Just enough thrill, blood, chase, betrayal, death and, humanity to keep me up all night reading. This was not one of the current house trained semi neutered Werewolves, thankfully. They are big teeth, hate filled predators. The author did a fabulous job for this readers taste, never going too far, never cutting back to soon, never throwing in the lust is the reason card. Horror ? I don't think I'd call it that, it was a thriller, edge of your seat thriller with some blood, crunched bones and big teeth.

I started book 2, about 10 second after putting this one down

Cursed is the first book in a new werewolf series by David Wellington. I have had my eye on this book for what feels like ages so I was thrilled when Piatkus sent me a review copy. And I wasn't disappointed, Cursed is a very good werewolf tale.

We meet Cheyenne Clark, "Chey", out in the wilderness of the Arctic Circle. We're not sure why she's there but she's heading towards something. The first chapter begins with a bang as Chey is violently carried away by a flash flood, but fortunately she walks away alive except for a few cuts and bruises.

After walking for sometime, Chey feels eyes boring into her, and as she realises it's a pack of wolves her only savour is to climb a tree. Suddenly the wolves smell and hear something that frightens them away and Chey looks down to see another wolf staring up at her. But this wolf is different, he's huge with shiny green eyes. The wolf jumps to try and take a bite but can't quite reach her. He does manage to damage her ancle, tearing through to the bone.

After the wolf leaves in frustration, Chey climbs down and walks for days until she finally comes across a strange man called Dzo who at first isn't concerned by the fact that she's freezing, injured and almost starved to death. Eventually he concedes after Chey shows him her bite wound, which is healing somewhat quickly on her ancle. He takes her to a cabin where she meets Powell.

Chey's own particular story unfolds over the course of the book, which is frustrating as well as fun all at the same time - my fault entirely, I'm just too impatient.

Quite a lot of the story is in flashbacks giving the history of Powell and Chey and although it's mostly telling us rather than showing, it was still very absorbing. Chey and Powell both have interesting backgrounds and as Chey's story unfolds, everything builds to a very exciting climax and an ending that was satisfying and had me wanting to read book two.

However, I did have one issue. I found the writing a little repetitive at times and the author's apparent affinity for the word 'though' was very distracting. This was added at the end of almost all of the characters' dialogue. I'm sure it was to give the dialogue a more natural and authentic style, but it just didn't work for me. It bugged me no end! If it was a trait one character had, then I would have let it pass but it didn't matter which character was speaking, it was added anyway. After a while this became more and more noticeable and increasingly irritating.

VERDICT:

For me, Cursed is more of an urban fantasy than a horror. I will admit I was expecting something more horrific in nature, more visceral, but the fact that it isn't didn't diminish my enjoyment. The story moves along at a good pace and there aren't many moments where the story dragged.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book and I'm sure both urban fantasy and horror fans would enjoy it.

Holy sentence fragments and comma splices Batman!

To be fair I read this novel online, but a little editing would have been very appreciated.

The entire work was a tad cliche and the writing abysmal. It was disjointed, unfocused, and amateurish. I think the story would have been decent if I hadn't been so distracted by the poor writing. The repitition (which I suspect Wellington intended to parallel Chey's transition from woman to beast and to reinforce the primal, animalistic side of her) was mostly annoying.

Still I commend Wellington for "putting it out there". I'll just hope his vampire and zombie novels are better written.

It's nice to read a book in which werewolves are still monsters, not alpha male boyfriends showing off their abs on the front cover. This is pretty standard horror werewolf fare (girl on a hunting trip/hike in the wilderness gets attacked by a wolf-like creature and becomes 'infected' with werewolf virus). There are a few minor twists and changes by the author (), but it was still a fairly basic story, told in a fairly basic way.

I enjoyed the couple of vampire books I've read by this author, but this left me cold and I won't bother with the sequel, even though I have a copy on my shelves. In fact, both the books will be heading for the second hand book store soon - hopefully someone else will enjoy them more than I did.

If you're looking for werewolf horror, I would recommend The Last Werewolf or Maneater rather than this novel. If you're still curious about this one, PM me - if I still have them, I'll post both paperbacks to you.

Cheyenne is a dedicated woman and she has a job to do, but when she is scratched by the very thing that has haunted her since she was twelve years old, she now becomes that very monster. Her life drastically changes and her survival is at risk. The choices she has to make will determine what kind of future she will have. Nobody can help her decide; her thoughts have to battle themselves before she can make one final choice. Will she join the beast that ruined her life all those years ago, or will she lift that gun, the one with the silver bullet...

(Please be aware that this review may contain spoilers before reading further.)

I loved this book. Unlike other urban fantasy, it centres on one woman’s survival without the silly things in-between; such as random sex scenes or the boring, stupid actions of a dumb heroine. This is not a romance book, nor is there any romance in it, but it really didn't matter.

Cheyenne goes through so much, physically and emotionally, but she never gives up. She is one amazing woman and I really can’t say anything bad about her. She does what she needs to and never disappoints. Just if all female leads were like that...

The other characters were well written; Powell coming off as lonely and an old soul and Dzo... well Dzo peeked my curiosity. I liked him. Very mysterious indeed. I can’t say I liked Bobby much, his hair actually made me cringe.

There is quite a bit of back story, explaining both Chey’s and Powell’s past. I found it very interesting even though it strayed from the main story. I didn't get bored at all; in fact I wanted to read it, which surprised me. Usually back tracking over past events bores me to the point I want to skip ahead.

The setting in this book was simply beautiful. David Wellington describes things so well and being a wannabe writer, I really appreciated the detail and it gave me motivation to try and get that standard of stunning atmosphere writing. The Arctic, whilst beautiful, is just as deadly, and we get to see the hell Chey has to endure. In fact, when walking my dog through the woods just the other day, I found myself thinking what it would be like to be Chey. Of course there was no snow, but nevertheless, the pine needles sent my mind racing.

I usually like the change from human to wolf as painful as possible. I preferred the get-down-on-all-fours-with-bones-shifting-and-fur-sprouting and not the easy way. I remember watching the movie Blood and Chocolate and hating the simple flash of light and BOOM, wolf. While I still prefer the horror way, I accepted the magical way in this book. It was a curse after all, tied completely to the moon.

The wolf and human as separate beings is more enjoyable than them being the same. They are two halves of a whole, the wolf hating humanity with its very core. This was a great touch.

A great adventure in my opinion. It was refreshing. I can’t wait to read the next one. While this is classed primarily as 'horror', I wouldn't call it so.

Werwolves are my favorite classic monster and this is a good one. Good story with in-depth characters lots of action, and few plot twists. Normally novels with lots of action bore me but this was a real page Turner and none of the action seems like it is pointless and just added so the story will be action packed. I highly recommend it and will be reading more from this author soon.

I became a staunch David Wellington fan before I’d even passed the first few sentences. Any author who can write this well, with this powerful impact, who can turn his characters inside out, plot like a demon-deserves the widest possible readership. I found “Frostbite” incredible, and am racing on to read the sequel, “Overwinter,” and then everything else Mr. Wellington has published, including a Zombie trilogy and several vampire novels, as well as others.

Initially “Frostbite” is the story of a hapless female eco-tourist, separated from her group, subsequently lost in the high summer Canadian Arctic North. Ostensibly-because this is no ordinary tourist, no citified lady visiting what is nearly the last remaining primeval wilderness. Cheyenne Clark is a woman with a mission-a woman determined to track and to locate an enemy whose predations she has suffered from since age twelve. But because this is a David Wellington novel, absolutely nothing is as it seems.

Gentle Reader, this is not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill, werewolf novel. Far from it. By the end you will find everything you ever believed about werewolves (and so much else) turned completely inside out and topsy-turvy. Please don’t take my word for it-you MUST read this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book. Not sure what, entirely, I was expecting upon going into it. Whatever they were though, this book veered off in a completely different direction and I kind of appreciate that. It's a very different approach to what I'm used to seeing in werewolf novels, and that was refreshing in its own right.

I will say, I've not checked yet to see if there's more to this, if the author turned it into a series or anything. Holding out hope that he did, because there are a few loose threads it feels like he left dangling, and I'd kind of like to see them resolved.

Should you find yourself looking for a somewhat chilling book next spooky season that leans more towards horror and you want werewolves, I do recommend this one. Fair warning though: after the last handful of chapters, the word "silver" ceases to hold any and all meaning.

I long for a good werewolf book. They come out rarely, and good ones rarer still. This is a good one and this author gets it right. It's not about the rampaging beast, but about the curse. It is about the curse, what it does to families, to people and to the fabric of morality. It is wrong to kill, right? But is it wrong to kill to eat, to survive? When you are THE apex predator, then you kill as you wish. Throw in the duality of the human versus the wolf in each shapeshifters core, where the Human fears the Wolf, and the Wolf hates and hungers for the flesh of the Human, and the story gets deeper still. The is a second book in this duology and I cannot wait to delve into its depths. I highly recommend this book. So very good indeed!

The story starts right in the middle of action, as lone hiker Cheyenne is swept up in a flash flood in the Canadian wilderness near the Arctic circle. She survives, but is caught up in a tree when a pack of wolves comes after her. Then those wolves are chased away by a much larger wolf, one that tries to attack her in the tree. Injured, she meets up with a strange man named Dzo in the forest, who takes her to a man named Powell. As she is getting cleaned up, she overhears that Powell wants to kill her, and she runs. Unfortunately, night is falling, and now is when Chey learns that Powell is a werewolf, and she is too. And Powell's wolf wants to kill her... but Chey has a secret up her sleeve, one that will leave her running from Powell and from others.

This was an interesting tale, full of action. I enjoyed reading about both Powell and Chey's pasts, although it looks like I will have to move on to Overwinter to see more of them working together and not trying to kill each other. I can't say I haven't seen or read other things where supernatural creatures prefer living in the Northern regions because of all the night/lack of people, but this was an enjoyable, fast read. Definitely for horror fans and NOT paranormal romance fans.

This was an okay book; I love all of Wellington's other books, but this one felt amateur to me. The dialogue was stilted and clumsy and the exposition got tired. It felt like the story took way too long to get started and then it barreled toward the end, throwing out plot twists and characterization changes haphazardly. By about two-thirds of the way through, I was done reading all the back-story and I ended up just skimming anything that wasn't action or dialogue.

Overall, I'm glad I read it, because I really, really do adore Wellington as an author, but I can't see myself picking it up again.

This is horror, not Young Adult. When I first read this, I was taken aback by the language--but that is because I had been on a Young Adult binge. It’s a little graphic but a great read, Wellington kept the story suspenseful and quick. It was realistic and gritty; the story's ending left it open for a sequel. The reason I gave it four stars was there is a character that is never fully explained, and I am still scratching my head wondering what he was--if you read the book you will know who I am talking about.

I personally would not recommend it to anyone. Around chapter five, I could no longer tolerate the confusing descriptions, or the idiocies of the Mary Sue protagonist, Chey, and grabbed my trusty highlighter and pen. I made it to chapter thirteen before I gave up--honestly, worse than "Twilight", and that's saying something. I haven't read the author's other books, and if they're anything like this, I don't want particularly want to, so I don't really have a standard on which to compare him. Regardless, this book is bad, and not in a good way. Please don't read it.

Reading this novel's sentence structure is like riding a dinky bus at full speed over an unpaved gravel road. It's hard to enjoy the ride when every few seconds you're being catapulted from your seat by a pothole, or thrown against the window when the bus swerves to avoid a chicken.

Name: Bryna Boettcher

Book title: Frostbite

Personal Response
Frostbite is an exciting, otherworldly mystery book. Cheyenne Clark was lost and alone in the woods. She got separated from her exploratory group and never found them. She was too far from the rendezvous point to be found. It seemed like she was on her own. Once it was dark she started looking for a safe place to wait out the dark of the night. The indigenous wolves disagreed. I liked this book because I really enjoy supernatural topics. Which. In this book-there was very much of. I was stuck in this book and had a very hard time putting it down, I really enjoyed following Cheyenne´s journey and how she dealt with it.

Plot summary
As Chey runs for her life in search of sanctuary from the wild beasts, the beasts get scared off by something. Chey has lived her whole life frightened of wolves. One wolf in particular. The cursed werewolf that brutally attacked and killed her father right next to her. The same werewolf that the timberwolves were running from, Chey managed to get herself up a tree and out of the reach of the little wolves. However, this tree would not stop the cursed wolf from getting to Chey. The big wolf scratched Chey’s ankle to the bone. Legend has it that one scratch from a werewolf will pass the curse onto the wounded.

Recommendation
This book would appeal to a crowd that finds interest in supernatural topics. I recommend Frostbite to anyone in the teenage crowd. It has many chapters that will leave the reader struggling to put the book down.

2.5 Nice bit of werewolf adventure. The first couple of chapters were quite spooky, girl chased by wolves at night in the frozen tundra. There were some unexpected twists to keep it interesting but dragged a bit with back story and ended predictably. Overall a an ok fun read.

I love Wellington. I have not read a book of his yet that I havent liked. He writes about these monsters and changes the way everyone thinks about them, but he keeps enough of the legend to be able to keep the name of the monster. some books change the rules so much you cant even call it a vampire, or werewolf anymore. I love that this one was written in the perspective of the monster and not of someone hunting the monster. I recommend Wellington to anyone who likes books.. You dont have to only like monster books. He is just amazing at telling stories.

Wellington creates a compelling, taut, page-turner set in the Arctic wilderness of Canada, starring another solid female lead who he puts through her paces (and then some), mixing in his trademark gripping action and pacing, then adding new seasonings to the werewolf mythos.
