Healer of Souls: The Life of Father Peter Mary Rookey and the International Compassion Ministry

Rate this book
"We all have weaknesses that affect our body, mind, and spirit. But it is our will to overcome them that decides how we live.´With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible´ (Mt 19:26)" - Father Peter Mary Rookey, O.S.M.

The ´healing priest´, Father Peter Mary Rookey, O.S.M, received Christ´s Gift of Healing in 1948. Since then, thousands of healings have been reported worldwide. Witness letters, some with medical consensus, have been submitted to the International Compassion Ministry. When asked about the healings, Father Rookey simply says, "I just do what He told us to do and the people are delivered and healed. We are answering the last command of Jesus,´ . . . They shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover´ (Mk 16:18).

For the first time, in his own words, Father Rookey explains his life´s journey that has been guided by his constant "Yes" to God. With gentle humor and keen intelligence, Father Rookey provides practical direction of how deepening trust in God´s Laws and Love leads to the healing of serious hurts and the overcoming of life´s most difficult challenges. In the process, Father Rookey says, "Our souls begin to recognize that we belong to Him and He is Love. Ultimately, filled with His Love, we can give the gift of ourselves to Christ and His Love will come forth through us."

" . . .it is all I can do to put it down. There is so much to this book. . . The testimonies of numerous healings are wonderful to read. The insights into Father´s life are also wonderful to read. But perhaps the most important parts of this book deal with his answers to the insightful questions which the author asks. For example, in asking Father about spiritual enslavement, he talked of conversion and turning away from serving Satan towar

Fr. Peter Rookey, has had such a lasting impression on my faith journey. Years before reading this book, I was introduced to Fr. Rookey by a close friend who had Fr. Rookey as her guide on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Prayer intentions were for her beautiful teenage son, who had terminal cancer. So many things opened her eyes while in Medjugorje. So, in 1993-4-5 when Fr. Rookey had mission visits to churches we could attend, She & I went to his masses.
One such Mass was in Chicago, in the Cabrini Green area, then destroyed by poverty, crime & drugs. The police guards w German Shepherd dogs, protected us as we filtered into Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica (the shrine of St Peregrine).

The inside of this basilica was spectacular. Lay people witnessed gifts of healing they had received, penitents going to confession, Rosary prayers, Mass & final healing blessings were offered to everyone. What an impression this humble, holy man made.
Months later, we drove from Omaha, Ne. To Sioux City, Iowa (1.5 hrs) to another Mass/ Healing Service. Although my friend also brought 2 of her school age children, I will only speak of my experience. Here we prayed for the teen w cancer. But during the consecration of the Mass, I looked at the host and saw… a face…. I immediately looked down at my hands, questioning my imagination- then looking to the 8th grade girl next to me.
She said,” you saw Him, too?” !!!
Ah! A confirmation, for my heart, that didn’t doubt in the first place.

I’ve often thought back to that day. But:

About 5 years later, I moved to FLorida. I was hired to teach in a Catholic elementary School. I drove to a small private Catholic bookstore, in FL, that I had never visited before. The female owner, in her mid twenties, was sitting on the floor stocking books. I picked up a paperback children’s book that had pen & Ink sketches on one side of the page, and English & Spanish words on the opposite page. I came across an image of Jesus Christ wearing the crown of thorns, eyes looking downward. I immediately gasp, and broke into tears. This was the face I saw in Iowa! But the young lady of the floor said, “ are you ok? Did you see His face while attending Mass w Fr Peter Rookey?”
How could this stranger know that?!? She, had attended a mass at Our Lady of Sorrows church, Chicago, in 1998. She was looking for her life directions, spontaneously flew from FL to Chicago, and saw the same face during the consecration of the Mass she had attended. On her plane ride home, an entrepreneur offered to sponsor her new mission, to open a catholic book store. She was so grateful for his help and my reactions, confirming what we both believed. Through the gifts of Fr. Peter Rookey, we had our faith strengthened, our missions made more clear, and blessings beyond our imaginations. As for me, I spent the next twenty years teaching Religion full time, to children.
