Sugarplum Falls #3

Blame It on the Candy Canes

Rate this book
“You have to kiss me!”

Those were the words I blurted out to my employee seconds before asking him to be my fake boyfriend.

When my parents told me they were coming to Sugarplum Falls earlier than expected and asked me to attend their friend’s holiday party— I knew it was all a ruse to set me up with their son. So, I needed a plan and fast.

I was surprised when Zach agreed and fell right into the role of loving, doting boyfriend. But what caught me even more off guard was how easy it seemed to be for us to be together— even when no one was around for us to fake it.

Regardless of how right it might have felt, there were too many reasons why I couldn’t date Zach. I had already convinced my heart, but his was another story.

I'm so happy to have another book to add to my favorite holiday series! In Blame It On The Candy Canes, Andi, the owner of Sugarplum Sweets, and Zach, her employee make arrangements to fake date each other to get Andi's parents off her back and for them to stop seeing her up with people.

I love a good fake dating trope! This one did not disappoint. Zach knows exactly what we wants and how to get it. Andi can be stubborn, but once she finally realizes Zach is the one for her, things start making sense to her. Throw in some snowy holiday weather, a power outage, and some yummy lattes with candy canes and you have the perfect recipe for love. Even though this is a novella, you aren't left feeling like you're missing something by the end.

THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU IF: You're looking for a quick and spicy holiday read where you can also explore other holiday books!

Once again, this adorable series by Samantha Baca did not disappoint! If you are looking for an adorable holiday themed little spicy romcom, this is the series for you!

Once again, we are transported to Sugarplum Falls, a small town full of holiday spirits, loveable characters, and the perfect amount of spice for your life!

I absolutely adored this fake dating trope and seeing Andi and Zachs relationship unfold. I am hooked on this entire series. I just can't get enough of the small town, banter between characters, and the delicious spice that is placed so perfectly.

It was confusing and felt unreal.

I usually love fake-relationship trope as well as friends-to-lovers. This one however took a bunch of weird turns and I got lost, constantly finding myself back in the same place.

So they agree to fake date for the sake of her parents who are visiting and want to matchmake her with some guy. And it's only fake between them (Zach and Andi).

But he thinks it'd be better not to pretend date, date for real instead.

But it's all pretend so kisses are only for show.

But she says she's bad at lying so instead of pretending they're going to date for real.

And they have sex.

Oh, but don't forget it's only pretend, Zach! Andi's reminding you of it like ten times a day.

But they have sex and sleep the whole night with each other which makes it ok because it's fake but not.

And there's an incident that I won't write about but it confuses me.more because he's adamant at talking it out while she wants to pretend it never happened...and the book goes on as if it never happened until I thought it won't be talked about. Which means that whole scene might've as well never happened. But then the subject is finally addressed after the "something goes wrong and they split before making up", it's like in the last chapter which for readers who decided to take a longer break in reading earlier on the book might not really remember what it was about.

There's also the fact that even though it was fake-real-fake, without discussing it before (they never discuss anything, basically she makes excuses to avoid social gatherings with parents before he takes over and does the opposite), he tells her and both their parents he's in love with her which shocks her (I'm with her on that).

Also, after they "break-up" and get back together, he makes a gesture (even though it was she who was supposed to realize things and go after him, IMO) he asks her

And to think I started this book, thinking "this is going to be a 5 star read. Nope.

What an adorable Christmas read that had me hooked from the first line. I adore anything festive and when it’s set in the perfect winter location it’s even better. Who doesn’t love a fake dating romance story with an adorable main male character. This was the first book I have read by Samantha and even though it’s part of the Sugarplum Fall Series, it is perfect as a standalone read. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series. I thoroughly enjoyed Blame It On The Candy Canes.

Thank you to Author Samantha Baca and Booksirens for providing an ARC of this spicy Christmas novella 🎄

I loved that the story jumped straight in and explained the need for the fake dating scenario between bakery owner Andi and her employee Zach. Zach knew what he wanted and this situation was just the way he could show Andi how good they could be together... given a little push.

This was short and sweet, full of Christmas spirit and sweet treats. But don't worry, the spice really heats things up 🔥 I'm going to read the rest of the stand alone holiday novellas in series in the lead up to Christmas as this was great!

If I could give a half star I would - so really a 3.5.
Thoughts: the love story was right up my alley, good hallmark quality love, cute little bakers. But then the smut hit and I wasn’t expecting it after all the hallmark feels. So I was conflicted on how I felt about the storyline with the mix. Maybe it was because it was also Christmas themed and I view that as a more wholesome time of year?? Not sure 🤷🏼‍♀️. Would it keep me from reading another book by this author- nope!! And let me add- she has an impressive list of works already!! Additional bonus- under 200 pages!!! 🎄📖

This was a very fun hallmark style book! I always love a fake relationship romance and this one was done well. The only reason this isn’t 5 stars is because I leave that for my absolute top favorites, but this was a highly enjoyable read! Written well, flowed at a nice pace, lovable characters.

Disclaimer: I did not purchase this book, I was given it for free to review.

I needed this heavy dose of sugary sweet (heavily laced spice) romance to pull me out of my dark October reading stint. I'm a big fan of fake dating and he falls first, along with a bit of forbidden romance from a work perspective.

I 100% recommend it for the season - I think it checks all the boxes of what a person wants to read for seasonal holiday romance! As many reviewers have commented, this gives a very Hallmark-vibe.. I did appreciate the small town setting and I like that there were 2 previous couples' stories to follow in this magical Christmas town.. it's just that this formula of romance story is for me. I love spice, there's nothing off limits for me, it just sometimes felt out of place with the pacing or even what I thought I knew about the characters.

My absolute favorite part? The growth in how the FMC allows herself to be her most vulnerable with the MMC.

If you like:
- Hallmark Christmas movies but make it spicy
- Smalltown romance where almost everyone runs a small business and truly comes to life for Christmas
- vulnerability in the bedroom and encouraging partners to work through anxieties
.. add this to your Holiday TBR.

If you're yearning for a festive read that packs a punch of wit, warmth, and whimsy, then Samantha's "Blame It On The Candy Canes" might just be your mug of cocoa! From the outset, I was roped in, like a kid spotting the biggest present under the tree. Picture this: a snow-draped setting so dreamy it would give any Hallmark movie a run for its money. And at the center of it? A delightful fake-dating escapade.

As this was my initiation into both Samantha's writing and the "pretend lovers" trope, I was like a cat on a hot tin roof, alternating between giggling and rooting hard for our main pair. It’s like watching two friends dancing around the inevitable and wanting to yell, “Just kiss already!” The witty banter? Imagine if Christmas crackers were filled with zingers instead of predictable jokes. And trust me, by the time Candy makes her entrance, things go from fizzy to full-blown fireworks.

Part of the "Sugarplum Fall Series," this gem sparkles on its own, but now my curiosity's peaked for the rest of the lineup. In between festive film squabbles and uproarious holiday shenanigans, you'll find your heart both laughing and longing. So, do yourself a favor and serve this up on your reading platter this holiday season. And who knows? You might just find yourself blaming all those feelings on the candy canes!

By the way, I snagged this delightful tale as an ARC, and let me tell you – it was love at first festive frolic!

😊What i liked -

✔ Workplace/Fake Relationship/Christmas.
✔ That first page itself had me laughing. I could picture the amusement on Zach's face.
✔ It gave out a very hallmark Christmas movie feel. So if you like hallmark movies then this is the book for you.
✔ The side characters were the cutest.
✔ The banter between the two was cute. This was a quick read too.

🤔What could have been better -

✔ Though I liked them both together, I felt they lacked chemistry. (but hey that's what I feel )

Worried her parents will try to set her up for the holidays, Andi begs her friend and employee Zach to pretend they are dating. Their fake relationship quickly feels anything but fake, but while Zach wants to go all in, Andi seems to be holding back. And, as things snowball, it's up to Zach to show Andi what he feels is for real and to find out why she is so afraid of a relationship between them when they seem to fit together so well in every way.

I am so happy to be back in Sugarplum Falls for the holiday season! These books always help usher in the holiday spirit with a smile! Blame it on the Candy Canes was a sweet holiday romance that wrangles quite a few tropes (fake relationship, boss/employee and friends to lovers) with ease. The author did a great job of combining some very sexy moments with a sugary sweet romance that also had enough depth to keep things interesting and not too “fluffy.” All of the holiday themed parties added some really funny moments and the story of the two candy canes gave me all the feels! And, my favorite part is the amazingly sweet and genuine grand gesture that helps to wrap up everything perfectly in the end, even if there were some bumpy relationship moments to reach it. 4 stars!

When bakery owner Andi lied to her parents about having a boyfriend to get out of a setup with their friends' son, she wasn't thinking about what would happen when they came to town for the holidays. With her parents due to arrive any minute, a panicked Andi begs her friend and employee Zach to kiss her - as a part of playing her fake boyfriend, of course. Zach, however, has been attracted to Andi since the moment they met and has no interest in pretending; he wants to date her for real. Can he help her overcome her fears and convince her to give their relationship a real shot?

Samantha Baca's holiday romances are always a ton of fun, and this one was no exception. I loved Zach and Andi's witty banter and powerful chemistry, as well as Zach's determination to win Andi over. I wish she had talked to Zach about what was causing her fears sooner, but I completely understood why she hesitated. Fortunately, they figured everything out in the end, and I was very happy with where they ended up.

I highly recommend this funny, sweet, and perfectly steamy story for all contemporary romance fans. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book of the series!

Andi needs a fake boyfriend and she needs one fast to prevent her meddling mother from setting her up with her friend’s boorish son. So she begs her employee Zach to pretend to be her boyfriend and get her out of the holiday party. Instead, Zach shoots his shot at getting his boss into a relationship.

This was a light, cute holiday romance. There wasn’t much weight to the story and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I did find myself regularly annoyed by the main characters’ inability to actually have a conversation and talk to each other. Zach repeatedly tried to convince Andi to make their fake relationship real only to drop it at the first sign of resistance instead of pushing the point.

Andi has a sexual dysfunction that, rather than discussing with Zach like a grown adult, lies about and evades multiple times creating unnecessary drama. I didn’t particularly care for how any of that was handled but I did enjoy seeing someone with sexual dysfunction in a book rather than the normal “easy to come and comes multiple times” that we normally get. I will be honest, it was the most interesting part of the whole thing.

Book Review
Blame It On The Candy Canes
By Samantha Baca
Thank you to @booksirens for an advance copy. My review is voluntary and is my opinion.
To avoid going out with the son of a family friend, Andi comes up with the idea of fake dating. So, she brings this up to Zach, one of her employees at Sugar Plum Sweets and he agrees. The deal was to pretend to be together only while her parents were in town for Christmas. Andi has basically sworn off dating because it would interfere with growing her bakery. She also doesn’t think it’s professional to date a coworker. But this was an emergency, and it was fake, so it was okay, right?
Andi is strong and independent. She has worked hard to get her bakery to be a successful business. She loves peppermint mocha lattes which Zach always brings her everyday they work together. When he picks up their daily coffee order, the barista gives him two candy canes because together they make a heart.
Zach had secretly been attracted to Andi, and so he was completely on board with fake dating her. He is supportive of everything Andi wants to do with the bakery and always tries to help in any way he can.
I love the small town feel and the chemistry between Zach and Andi. This is a “he fell first” where he will do anything for her. Zach is caring and his actions are not unbelievable or over done by the author. He is just right. Andi has feelings for Zach but is not ready to let it be known. This book is fast-paced and there is never a dull moment. This would make a great addition to your Christmas romance reading especially if you enjoy a little spice sprinkled with holiday cheer.
QOTD: Pumpkin spice latte or Peppermint mocha?

This is book 3 in Baca's Sugarplumb Falls series and can be read as a stand alone but what a delightful read this is and so addictively sweet with some heat - just like a good candy cane should be! This is the first of this series I've read and enjoyed it so much so I'm looking to read the first two soon. I love a good fake it troupe and this one was wonderfully done. Well written with amazing characters in bakery owner Andi and her employee Zach. Andi's been focused on her career and now with her family coming to visit she can't take her mother's matchmaking schemes. Enter Zach who's crushed on Andi all along but not wanting to risk their friendship much less their working relationship he's kept his feelings to himself - only she's just given him the perfect excuse to show her how well they can be when this fake relationship could be the real deal. I great, if short holiday romance read that ticks all my boxes!

Having not read any of Samantha's books before I wasn't sure what to expect. However I was pleasantly surprised. Andi has been busy building her business in Sugarplum Falls, when he's mom calls to say they're visiting for christmas she panicks cos she knows her mom's matchmaking plans. Zack it's one of her employees, he's had a secret crush on her not wanting to risk their friendship and his job he doesn't say anything. Until she fakes him as her boyfriend. Can they pull it off, or will her parents see through it. Andi is hiding a secret and the trouble is Zack seems to know her better than she thinks. This is a lovely story with some wonderful characters, with some interesting Christmas facts. I will say its a bit more explicit than I usually read althoughi was enjoying the story so much I didn't mind, I will certainly look for more of her books. I received this as an ARC copy and this is my own honest opinion and review of the book

As someone who struggled with feeling worthy of unconditional love myself, Andi’s story truly hit home.

This is the fairytale we all need, our very own Hallmark chapter in our lives. One that holds kept promises, loyalty, an unwavering conviction, and true altruism.

Zach: employee, easy on the eyes, truest of the true cinnamon rolls; savior of the fiery, warm hearted, but slightly closed off owner of Sugarplum Sweets, Andi.

Andi: boss, striking beauty, ambitious, big heart, workaholic, and guarded.

When fate brings them together their reactions, their wants/needs, their fears…it all adds a level of clarity, rightness, comfort, and warmth on so many levels.

There’s so much more I want to say, but alas I think you should experience the wonder of this Christmas miracle yourselves!

This book was such a feel good, holiday book. It takes place in a cute little small town called Sugarplum Falls. It's about bakery owner Andi freaking out because her parents are visiting and she's still single. To avoid being set up with her parents friends son, she decides to fake date Zach, a baker in her bakery.

When push came to shove, Zach was set and knew what he wanted with Andi, however Andi wasn't on board right away, Zach had to show her just how good they could be together.

This book was short and sweet and full of Christmas!!! I am a sucker for Holiday books with a small town setting/ feel. The book has a low spice level, but it's still there nonetheless.

This book is one short story in a series of short interrelated stories and I cannot wait to read the rest (I already bought them) this Holiday season!!

Thank you Samantha and BookSiren for the ARC!

Fake dating for the holidays sounds like a good idea, right? If it means not being set up with your parent’s friend’s son, it’s perfect. But for Andi, it means asking her employee to lend her a hand. An employee who isn’t afraid to push the taboo of a boss/employee relationship. Andi is so frustrating at times because she won’t allow anything real in her life. But Zach isn’t afraid to pull out the big guns to get what he’s always wanted, and that’s Andi. Her fight to keep Zach at arms length causes a lot of heartache and me screaming at her to let him in because he’s amazing!

As in all small town romances, there are parents with the best intent, neighbors with perfect advice, and a little nudge from special people in their life.

With a story centered around the joy and celebration of Christmas, I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and spirit of the book.

Blame It On The Candy Canes is book #3 in the Superplum Falls series of holiday novellas. This small-town, fake dating gem was just what I needed to get my holiday spirit fired up. Andi owns Sugarplum Sweets and is doing well with her business. Her mother is wanting to set her up on a date for an upcoming holiday part and Andi wants no part of it. She asks Zach, her employee, to be her fake boyfriend and help her "get out" of going to the party. Zach is more than happy to help her out, but he's all in for this adventure! The author has this special talent to transport you to this magical small-town (think Hallmark sugary sweet), but then spice it up (think Passionflix) for that perfect balance of love and lust. Andi and Zach are a perfect pairing for the holidays! *And I really do wish they would make this series into movies!!

This was so dang cute! It was just what I was looking for in a holiday novella and I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

I really enjoyed that this story jumped right into the fake dating aspect with just a quick explanation. Andi, the bakery owner, and her employee, Zach, jump into fake dating and he quickly realizes it's not fake for him. Zach is so caring and I love how quick he was to help Andi with anything she needed, even if she didn't know she needed it. SWOON! Their story hooked me right away and didn't let me go!

If you're looking for a quick Christmas themed read, don't look any further! The small town setting, sweet treats, and Hallmark type feels but with great steamy scenes was just what I wanted to start off my holiday reading!

Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.

The definition of a steamy hallmark book!

What to expect:
Adorable meet-cute
Forced proximity (One bed)
Strangers to lovers
Small town
Cinnamon roll hero
Independent heroine not looking for love
Steamy
Hea

This book was absolutely adorable! Blame it on the Blizzard features two authors who get stranded together in a blizzard. What better reason to throw so many tropes in one book? I felt like I just watched a hallmark movie but better because there was plenty of spice and everything nice! This novella has the perfect amount of Christmas magic that you won't want to miss! Sabastian and Brynlee are some of my favorite Samantha Baca characters and absolutely loved watching them fall in love!

Book 3 in this series of holiday books about the small town of Sugarplum Falls were people love christmas and find their true loves.
This is a fake relationship romance between Andi and Zach.
They work together and Andi needs a fake boyfriend to stop her parents trying to set her up with their friends son.
But this fake relationship gets out of hand and snowballs into something bigger and bigger everytime they lie.
But for Zach it is not fake he falls for Andi quickly and it is Andi who takes her time falling for Zach.
This is another wonderful audiobook narrated perfectly by Mollie Bensin...she was so Amazing telling this story and making Zach and Andi come to life..I Loved listening to her performance.

This is such a charming, great, Christmas story with heart, secrets, slow burn, he falls first for her, boss/employee… Andi is afraid to fall in love and show her feelings… especially for her employee Zach… she convinces him to be her fake boyfriend for holidays ehile her parents visits… Zach..well he likes Andi..alot more than just as a boss. The "candy cane story" from the coffee shop is a really a cute addition to this story, along with the charming characters of friends and family will really put you in that wonderful Christmas spirit!! Go grab a cup of your favorite Christmassy drink, a snuggling blanket and read this book!!😉🎄

Zach works for Andi in her bakery and has always harbored a mini-crush on her. When she asks him to be her fake boyfriend to stop her visiting parents from playing matchmaker, he agrees but presses her as to why they have to be fake instead of real. But Andi has been hurt in the past and she values Zach’s friendship. Can she put aside her fears to try something real?

This is a bit of an insta-love situation - their relationship moves quickly but the premise is they have known each other for a while. I have read the first book in this series. I liked it but the books work fine as stand-alones. All you need to know is that Sugerplum Falls is crazy about Christmas!

From the first page, to the last- I was completely engrossed in this book, because as always, Samantha Baca knocks it out of the park with a romcom that will make you laugh out loud and delivers all the warm fuzzies.

We find ourselves, once again, in the lovely town of Sugarplum Falls, where Christmas is always done right. This time, we meet Zach and his boss Andi- who is scrambling to find a boyfriend before her parents can set her up.

I rooted for the characters, I couldn’t put it down, I laughed out loud, and this book just made me happy… oh yeah- did I mention it’s also spicy?!

A quick and cute holiday read, perfect for christmas time.
A good 2/5 spice for me.
It started off so fast, I don't think I was ready for it. But, the first chapter had you like woah we're diving right into this haha. I do wish I had a little more background of Andi and Zach's relationship before they started fake dating. But, it was still a cute read. I just loved all of the Christmas themes all throughout the book. Reading this got me into the Holiday season coming up!

This is the first holiday story I have read. It definitely will not be the last. Andi, the boss, and her employee Zach decide to "fake date" so her parents will stop playing matchmakers. Zach quickly agrees to the plan. He knows what he wants, and that is Andi. And, however is determined it is fake. There were definitely a few times I caught myself yelling at her to open her eyes and heart. Thankfully, Zach wasn't willing to give up on them. This had the feel of a Hallmark movie with a bit of spice. This was a great read ahead of the upcoming holiday season.
