I enjoyed this book immensely. Melt follows the friendship of Jess and Cait, best friends forever. Chapters alternate between their teenage years in the 90s and growing into adults with kids, marriage, divorce and loss.

So much of this story I could relate to - Jess and Cait graduated from high school the same year as I did - it was like a blast from the past reading this book. From the relationships the friends had with boys, to the dresses they wore to their grade 12 graduation, I could practically see myself in their shoes. Wicks did a great job with the nuances of friendship, evoking feelings we all know well.

Heidi writes adulthood just as well as the teen years. I loved the comfortable and real way the characters spoke to each other, so true to Newfoundland. The politics added into the story was a nice feature. Newfoundland has always fascinated me and this book reminds me of my Newfie mother’s stories of her childhood.

I hope to read more from Wicks in the near future! Thank you to Breakwater Books for a copy of this book.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the writing, the characters and the setting. It reminded me of the years I spent in Newfoundland and the warmth of the community. The struggles in the story were so real and relatable. Excellent read.

I adored this story! Wicks beautifully shows us the significance and comfort of what lifeling friendships can be.

In Melt we follow friends Jess and Cait, weaving back and forth from their teenage years in the 90's to present day where they are in their late thirties. We see them go through the ups and downs life can bring, from the good times through the bad times. Boyfriends and graduation to marriage, kids, heartache, divorce, grief, loss, and all the complexities adulthood brings. Wicks's prose are smooth as she weaves us back and forth through these womens lives. I loved these characters, and easily saw myself in them and the senarios they go through, which were so real and relatable. I loved the Newfoundland setting too. Wicks really captured the essence of decade long friendships, how they can entwine into our lives and become a part of us. Thank you so much to Breakwaterbooks for sending me this beauty.

I actually enjoyed this book a little more than I anticipated. Perhaps it's because of all the references to growing up in Newfoundland in the late 90s? I really, really love how Cait and Jess's friendship is intertwined with the province's recent history. I think the back and forth worked really well--plus, I always appreciate when a chapter lets me know what year the story's in now, haha.

I read this in two sittings. I thought Heidi did a really good job of highlighting the ups and downs of being an adult, the messiness our relationships often end up in, and how we persevere anyways.

Notable mention: The Gap Hoodie we all had back in the day.

A refreshing and honest look at the nuances of female friendship. This book felt like a time capsule that seeks to remind you to cherish the good times, while recognizing the lessons you can take from them. It is filled with 90’s nostalgia, many hilarious moments, and real characters. Emphasis on the real.

This is a book for people of St. John’s- I loved the story and all of the mentions of familiar places. I don’t think it would hit the same for people not from the area
