Belonging to what one may best describe as representative of the culture of the ‘urban popular’, the novella dissevered (khandita), published seventy years after independence, incorporates the birth pangs of a newly emergent nation experienced by the so-called ‘gully boys’, Gora, bias, and Sati, in a form that presents historical events through the techniques of fiction. Its added significance to the modern reader is its prescient quality, bringing to the fore dominant questions of nationalism, identity crises, communal disharmony, and citizenship that mark public discourse in the present times. In the portrayal of events and personalities which belong to the twin history of the Partition and the birth of a new nation (Bangladesh), and through a language of the gutters that ironically mimics the mores of civic society, The desire for unity of the nation felt by the three disoriented youths is in the realm of the ideal possible.This is metaphorically envisioned in the figure of Gandhi in Noakhali and as embodied in the desire for the nomadic female with amputated arms by satu, one of the three young men. This novella perhaps best illustrates Samaresh Bose’s genius as a writer, who could translate his experience of historical time in all its multiple complexities without the imposition of any doctrine(despite his leftist leanings). it remains a unique depiction of the conflicting emotions experienced by ordinary folks on the eve of India’s independence.

'Dissevered' (translated by Rani Ray) is the english translation of Khandita(খন্ডিতা)(meaning cleft into two) written by Samaresh Bose. It's a historical novel set in the context of the partition of Bengal. It's the story of three bengali hindu friends Satyesh Chattopadhyay (Satu), Saurindra Mitra (Biju) and Gauranga Ghosh (Gora) who experienced the pain and anguish of the partition of Indian subcontinent.
However, the three friends decided to celebrate India's independence by traveling to see how the newly formed (East) Pakistan looks. They wanted to see how the people on the eastern part of Bengal are celebrating their freedom. This desire sparked three of them to visit East Pakistan on the night of August 15 from their hometown in West Bengal.
Their journey begins when they met Syed Badruddin Islam in North Bengal Express. Hearing their wish to see the newly-formed country, Badruddin invited them at his house as guests. Accepting the invitation, they spent three days at Lalbagh, Rangpur. On 19th August, they arrived at Syedpore from Rangpur to meet their friend, Madhusadan's elder brother, Harisadhan Prasad. They heard about the settlement of nomadic women dancers at a penal colony where they confined as sex-slaves. Satu visits the colony and encountered with a woman called Moti. The story unfolds when Moti told how her body and soul was partitioned since childhood, making the book absolutely an amazing read.

দেশমাতৃকাকে ভাগ করে খন্ড করা হল বলেই নাম তার খন্ডিতা। যোগ্য নাম বটে, তবে আনন্দের কিছু নয়।
তিন বন্ধুর দেশভাগ নিয়ে আলোচনা ও পূর্ব পাকিস্তান যাত্রা পথের অভিজ্ঞতার মধ্যে দিয়ে উঠে এসেছে দেশ ভাগ নিয়ে সাধারনের চিন্তা, ততকালীন রাজনীতিবিদদের নিয়ে সাধারণ মানুষের ধারণা, হিন্দু মুসলমানের মনের মধ্যে সহাবস্থানগত সমস্যাগুলোর বর্ণনা ও ও তাদের চেতনায় দেশভাগের স্বস্তির কিংবা সংশয়ের জায়গাগুলো। উপন্যাসটি ভাল লেগেছে,অস্থির সময়ের একটা খন্ডচিত্র যেন উঠে এসেছে খুব সহজ ভঙ্গীতে। পথে দেখা হওয়া সংকীর্নমনা কিংবা ক্ষেত্র বিশেষে উদারমনা – দেশ বিভাগের সুবিধা ভোগি ও ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ দুইদলের মানষের চোখে একটা সময় যেন উঠে এসেছে, দেশ ভাগের সেই উত্তাল সময়।
পুরো উপন্যাস ভাল লাগলেও ফিনিশিং এবরাপ্ট লেগেছে। পাঠকের চেতনায় একটা কষাঘাত করার ইচ্ছে লেখকের থাকলেও থাকতে পারে তবু তুলনা/মেটাফোরটা ঠিক ভাল লাগেনি আমার। কেমন যেন রূপক এবং মূল জিনিষের মধ্যে সংযোগটা লাগসই হয়নি।
প্রচ্ছদটা বেশ লেগেছে আমার, টাচ করেছে।

দেশভাগ আজ একটা প্রতিষ্ঠিত সত্য।আমরা যারা স্বাধীন দেশে জন্মেছি তাদের কাছে দেশভাগ শব্দটা অদ্ভুত রহস্যময়।দেশভাগ নিয়ে অনেক লেখা হয়েছে কিন্তু এইরকম টানটান adventurous, খন্ডিত ভূখণ্ডের দুই সম্প্রদায়ের perspective এমন নির্লিপ্তভাবে কোনো লেখায় ফুটে উঠেছে কিনা সত্যি জানা নেই আমার।
