Christy Is a Forever Friend

A Time to Cherish

For Labor Day weekend, Christy Miller is on a houseboat at Lake Shasta. What could be better? She’s about to find out! Before they know it, both Christy and her best friend, Katie, are receiving some unexpected male attention. But somehow these best friends are at odds just when they should be having the most fun together. Christy soon realizes that sometimes you have to stand back and let people make their own decisions, even when they’re headed for a fall. And although life is never perfect, this is definitely a time to cherish.

Sweet Dreams

Christy Miller’s senior year is delicious, especially the time she spends with Todd. But her best friend, Katie, is struggling—she’s realized she needs to break up with Michael. It’s not easy! Fortunately both Doug and Disneyland help Katie to cheer up. Christy is learning to let go and get out of the way so that her friends can become who they’re meant to be...even when it jeopardizes her own sweet dreams.

A Promise Is Forever

Christy Miller’s going to Europe! It’s a three-week missions trip with Doug, Katie, and Tracy. First London for some sightseeing, and then a castle in the English countryside for group training. Christy is so excited to be headed for Belfast with her friends—despite some tension among them. But when plans go topsy-turvy at the last minute, Christy must face her fears and realize that some things are more important than her own comfort...and that even when she can’t foresee the end result, a promise truly is forever.

Story Behind the Book

“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise . I love that!” —Robin Jones Gunn

I do my reviews in the form of a letter, which is why they are written like this.

Dear Robin Jones Gunn,

This volume and the first volume are tied as my favorites. They are both so touching and sweet. Honestly, all of the volumes are good, but volumes one and four are my favorites. :) I really like what happens between Christy and Todd. :)

A Time to Cherish-

Where to begin with this book? It's just honestly so good. The characters are good (except for Katie and Michael [argh!]). I really really REALLY love that Todd and Christy FINALLY start going steady. It's been nine whole books before they openly decide that it's time to date. :) I do admire them both for being so wise though. It was a good thing that she and Todd waited until they were older and wiser. It was just so great to read about them being boyfriend and girlfriend. I like how they are around each other now that they're dating- especially since Todd treats Christy like more than a friend now. He talks about all their special things, too. :) Unfortunately, I couldn't really stand Katie in this book. I felt really bad for her at first. The poor girl was having so much trouble getting a guy to like her. I could understand why she felt sad and somewhat insecure. I just did NOT like the fact that she started dating Michael. When she started dating him, it's like she completely forgot about God and put her desire to be liked by a guy first. And then she treated Christy like junk! Dating a guy that is not a Christian was NOT a wise move for her. It's not that non-Christians are disgusting or repulsive or anything like that. It's just that a person who doesn't know the Lord is not seeking the same thing a Christian is seeking. That makes the two people fundamentally different. Katie was just so blind, though! She acted as if Christy was being judgmental for telling Katie the truth. And she also stopped hanging out with Christy too. So in this book, kudos to Christy, but NO kudos to Katie.

Sweet Dreams-

I can't even begin with this book. It was totally and amazingly great! I looooved it! First off, I'm going to start with the small details. (Well, they're not that small.) I am so glad that Katie finally made her decision and broke up with Michael. I felt really bad for her, especially because she was really hurting. I'm just glad she made the right choice. Christy and Katie's friendship had been suffering for long enough. Also, it was nice to see Katie be her old self again. :) Also, Christy's senior year is almost over! It's so weird to think that she had just come out of her freshman year when I first met her. :/ Now to the bigger things. Christy and Todd and so serious about each other in this one! It's so cute! I love how Todd tells her how much he cares about her, and how they both fell in love with each other. And it's so clean! I really like that their relationship is very, very clean. :) But the ending... Why? Why? I wish Christy had never broken up with Todd!! They were getting so close and everything was perfect! But then Todd had to spill the beans about his missionary job offer. Well, at least they both honored God, and that's the most important thing. I especially like the message that we need to give God all we have, even what's most important. So anyways, great book!

A Promise is Forever-

This book is pretty good for the most part. Christy seems to be mostly over Todd. The majority of the time is spent planning and talking for Christy. I think it's really cool that she went to Europe for a while. She met a lot of friends and learned a lot about the culture. Anyways, there's a bit of drama in this book. Christy and Doug are dating, which I think is not a good idea at all. They should just be friends. Thankfully, they both figure that out, and Doug ends up with Tracy. It's so cute! Christy also meets Sierra, who seems like a cool character. I just might read her series some day. I really like the fact that Christy learns that she needs to depend on God alone. She finally figures out that God needs to be Lord of her life-not herself. Her trip to Barcelona is pretty harsh, but it teaches her that. And and and!!!! She is reunited with Todd!! I was soooooooo happy!! Todd and Christy belong together!!

Anyways, thank you so much for this book and for this series. It's so great!!

Sincerely,
Lena Marie

05/24/20 Update: I don’t know if it made a difference that I’m older and can understand more, but I really felt for Christy in these books. The last one, specifically. It was so obvious that Christy ached for Todd and wasn’t over him. It was obvious that she and Doug didn’t have the “spark” a man and a woman need to have a romantic relationship. Even though these books are fictional, there’s something about Todd and Christy being together that just feels so right. I have never encountered another fictional couple that meshed so well together. Todd and Christy love each other will the purest of loves. Now that I’m older, I really appreciate how long their relationship took to develop. It builds anticipation and also shows us all how we can be patient. And yes, I cried a good amount while reading these books, especially the last two.

I have conflicting feelings about these books. On the one hand, they are sweet, wholesome and innocent. Loyalty to friends, respecting your family, helping others less fortunate and being a good person are all very good messages stressed here, but I do have a lot of problems with the series though. It's definitely the most judgey and preachy of the series. Christy spends a lot of the story lamenting the fact that Katie is dating a non-Christian, even though Katie states that he believes in God and is spiritual. I guess there is a difference in this world. Michael is depicted as shady and not to be trusted due to his beliefs and his interest in organic food and green lifestyle. The character of Todd continues to grate on me. I became irritated when he expresses his belief that the man should be the one to make the moves and basically control the relationship, and Christy is fine with that. He seems so concerned with what went on with Christy and Rick when they were dating. He frets that she may have been taken advantage of. What if Christy had said she was? I wonder what Todd would have done? Dumped her? He seems so obsessed with her purity and innocence. And of course, he's off again in the jungles or somewhere, converting those icky non-believers and when they meet up again, everything's perfect and they resume their very hard to define relationship once again. The ending of the last book is very sweet and all. The fairy tale ending. I just worry about how many young girls are going to read this and think that their life is going to turn out like this. They are going to be rescued by their Prince Charming and everything will be nifty, while he calls all the shots. And let's not even get me started about No Kiss Doug and their pseudo relationship.

By far the best volume in the series. the characters have grown and changed and become so dynamic by the time you hit the end you feel like you've experienced your senior year of high school all over again without all your own personal drama.

*bittersweet sigh*

It's over. The Christy Miller High School series is officially over. I cannot believe that one, it ended like that, and two, that I enjoyed the last two volumes so much more than the first two.
I've taken some guesses, but I think a lot of it has to do with Christy's maturity, or perhaps I can just relate more with the older Christy. But whatever the reason I ate volume 3 & 4 up.

A Time To Cherish ★★★★☆

Friendships aren't necessarily an easy feat. I appreciated the examples of what a Christian is expected to do in a situation that our friend is doing something we consider morally wrong, or goes against our personal beliefs. I think it's a very useful thing to know, and it's definitely something I've had to learn through some trial an error I might add 🙈
Overall, a great book, and jam packed of some useful and relatable life lessons.

Sweet Dreams ★★★★☆

I finished these books a little bit ago so its a lil rusty in the brain, but I remember laughing out loud at moments (I don't remember why anymore 😅)
I thought the Disneyland setting was cool (but like also I feel like they're dated at this point bc Disney ain't the same Disney it used to be).
Overall a very sweet book. But honest to goodness the painting scene was ✨perfect✨ and should be a trope at this point.

A Promise Is Forever ★★★☆☆

I'm not sure the lower rating is a great rating, but I read the Sierra Jensen series before this and it spoiled the ending for me so I wasn't surprised in the least. I think the change of settings was great, and the aspect of missions too. I was a little upset with Doug bc how could he switch over like that??? (Iykyk 🙄)
I did like how realistic it was to have the "incident" in the train car bc as a female I would be like pulling things in front of the door to make sure no man ever gets close to me, but I'm overly paranoid 😅
Overall, knowing the ending kinda made this book a full star lower so if you don't know the ending it will definitely be much better for you.

To wrap this up, I enjoyed this series a lot more than I thought I would, and I'm glad. It definitely lived up to the Christian girl staple hype that I've seen, and there's a reason so many people talk about it. Can't wait to read the continuing years (and I'd love to get my hands on the Christy & Sierra book bc I'm dying to see who Sierra ends up with. But also I just realized the glennbrook series is the book for a lot of the side characters so that's on the tbr now too 🤭). If you haven't read this, or any of Robin Jones Gunn's books than you're definitely missing out 😜

This is a three-books-in-one volume that includes books 10, 11, and 12 of the Christy Miller series. I’ve given a review of each story below.

Book 10
A Time to Cherish
Christy, her friends, and her aunt and uncle take a houseboat vacation to Lake Shasta. She and Todd finally agree to start dating. And while this seems to make their relationship even better, it ruins everything for Katie and Doug, who now feel like third wheels. How is a girl to behave when she has a boyfriend and her best friend doesn’t? And when Katie does find Michael—a guy who isn’t a Christian—how is Christy supposed to be a good friend? By telling Katie the truth or by giving her the freedom to crash and burn? Christy doesn’t know.

This was a great story. After so much time that Christy had patiently waited for Todd, I was thrilled that they were finally together. But I could feel her pain with the situation with Katie. When our dear friends are in relationships that are destructive, it’s hard to know what to do or say. With Todd’s nearly always perfect advice, Christy learned how to love her friend no matter what.

Book 11
Sweet Dreams
In this story, Katie breaks up with Michael, and Christy tries to learn how to cope with someone who is constantly depressed. It seems like everything she does to try and help Katie is the wrong thing to do.

This book was one of my favorites! And it was so bittersweet. Christy learned from Katie’s pain and was obedient to God, and it was beautiful! And sad. I cried, I admit it. But I have hope for the future.

Book 12
A Promise is Forever
This book fast-forwards a year. Christy is halfway through her freshman year in college. She, Doug, Tracy, and Katie travel to London for a mission trip. Christy is searching for a calling, to discover what she should do with her life. What she finds instead is total trust in God.

This book was another one of my favorites, though I have to admit, I was getting pretty grouchy alongside Christy when I realized what was happening with Doug. Still, this book was a beautiful example of how we—with our selfish emotions—need to get out of the way and let God work. I almost cheered out loud when I got to the end. You just have to read these books yourself to see what I mean.

I very highly recommend this entire series for girls ages 12 and up. I adore these books. Christy is a lovely example of a Christian teen, who struggles with almost everything you can imagine. There is no better set of books out there to help young girls prepare for life. I will be putting this entire series in the church library. Someday, my little girl will read them. And while I wait for my girl to grow, I will go read Christy and Todd: the College Years.

A Promise Is Foreever

Christy Miller is finaly going to Europe with her three frinds. Doug,Katie, and Tracy for a 3-week-missions trip. there's some tension between the group about Doug and Christy going together.

At the last minute Christy must decide a BIG question which mean's she must face her fears and relize that something's are more important then her own comfort, and that even when she cant see the end result, " A Promise Is Truly Forever."

I highly recommend this book, but more girls then guys. Full of drama and suspence, and a good page turner.

"Sealed their forever promise with a kiss." :)

This collection of three books encompasses the end of Christy's high school years: her relationship with Todd deepens and her friendship with Katie gets toppled for awhile, ending with a missions trip to England with Doug for a boyfriend, among other surprises. As RJG has written these the writing does get better and the characters definitely grow and change, but I do wish she could have given Christy a season without a guy to lean on. The second she decides she doesn't need one, back into her life one comes. And "the garden of her heart" is one of many phrases that make my teeth hurt.

Sierra Jensen is introduced in the final third. She is a breath of fresh air for awhile.

I'll just say this for the whole Christy Miller series. I read every book, minus the college years, about a year or two ago. I don't remember the little details, but I do remember LOVING the books. They were all very fast reads and contained great lessons for my faith. The only thing bad about any of them is they can get a little cheesy at time, but not enough to make me put them at a 4 star rating.
Whole Series: 4.5 stars
(And I do plan on eventually reading the last three books in the college volume.)

This series was amazing. Watching Christy mature helps you mature along with her. Watching her grow closer to God makes you grow close to God with her. These books put so much perspective in life that I can't imagine having gotten so quickly and easily. I have to say that the final book did have me stressed in some ways because there was so much change that felt so jarring after getting to know Christy in the 11 preceeding books, but it really helps to show how you cannot try to control everything, you have to surrender it all.

I'm so sad the series is finished!
I know RJG wrote about Christy's and Todd's life after this series, but still! I feel like I lost my best friend. I would recommend all 12 books to anyone, Christian or not. It's amazing how God used the series to touch my life- and I know it will continue to bless people all over the world. :)

What I really loved about the book series was that I could I relate to it. It was honest, and many of the things Christy and her friends went through really hit home for me.

This summer i read this series for the second time. It changed my outlook again on so many things, for the better. Everyone needs to read this series. It's full of romance, and everything a teenager goes through. This series is incredibly encouraging & shows how everything works out for those who wait and trust God. <3

I finally got around to reading this series. This volume has the next three books of the series, and they're good. The writing is well done, the characters are interesting, and the plots are cute--totally appropriate for older kids and teens. I love her learning about faith and about friendships and relationships.

The first book in this volume is good, it really gives you hope with Christy and Todd. Though it does drag slightly. The Second Book I liked a lot though the end sort of killed me! But I made it through. The last book really wrapped up the series in the only acceptable way! It made me want to read the "Christy and Todd: The college years" series!

The ending of book 11 was so sweet. I really like this series.

UPDATE 2017: I think that I meant book 12. That is a sweet ending! While I liked the Sierra Jensen and Katie Weldon books too, Christy is my favorite. She is the one I find myself most able to relate to.
