I read this due to an interest in Ireland and the Troubles, but also b/c I was friends with the author's daughter in college. McNamara died tragically when a young man - it's sad that we've all missed everything else he would have written.
This is a novel but has some great truths to it. I bought it for a dollar somewhere back in the 80's and it, more than any other book of Irish history or fiction I've ever read, opened my eyes to the fact that the "Troubles" in northern Ireland were controlled by groups of people who didn't give a damn about people or ideals, all they cared about was power and money. Turned my idealism on the subject into more factual pragmatism.
