A coming of age tale reminiscent of CS Lewis, The Four Faces, is a fine debut novel written lovingly by author Retha Groenewald. Her four main characters, Human, Lion, Eagle and Ox, experience a spiritual and emotional journey meant to prepare them to justly oversee Human’s father’s kingdom once the time comes for his father to step down.
There are a slew of interesting characters (with equally interesting names) in the story, each a helpful or detrimental steppingstone in the four adventurers’ search for meaning.
Groenewald has managed to create a sweet story, suitable for the whole family. A story woven with Christian themes of love, forgiveness, devotion and most importantly purpose in serving God.
The book itself has a few bumps in its presentation, but nothing that makes it difficult or unenjoyable to read. It did become clear though, as I read along, that the book seems to be written for grade school age to early middle school readers, and a bit simply written for the discerning adult fantasy reader.
I would recommend this novel and find it a good start for a first time author. - Chrinda Jones author of ‘Darkness Knows Me’ and blogger for ‘Readers Unbound’
A nicely woven tale filled with adventure, danger, deceit, and the pursuit of knowledge. Biblical truths shine throughout the long journey that ultimately leads The Four Faces to an important and profound discovery as they make their way back to the kingdom. I think this book would be excellent for YA Bible study groups, Sunday School classes, etc, as it contains many parallels to the Bible and would appeal to that age group.
After reading some other reviews, I was interested to read this book to my children. I started reading it on my own first, however, and I am glad. The writing is very simple, which others have said would appeal to children. I have read many wonderfully written children's books, and unfortunately, I did find the writing style for this to be distracting. The story itself is very creative and has a lot of potential. If it was meant to be a children's book, however, there are a lot of complicated themes that I believe would be missed by the younger reader. I read through to the end, mostly because I was intrigued by what the answer to the king's question would be. I know for myself, as a Christian, what my purpose for life is, and was curious to find what the four faces would discover. There were many interesting plot twists, however they were all very quickly and too conveniently resolved. I appreciate what the author was trying to do with this story, and like I said, there were many interesting ideas in the book, but I was disappointed by the writing style. The author has potential, and will hopefully work out the kinks in future books.
Hats off to Retha Groenewald for beautifully combining a fantasy adventure with a biblical understanding of our life's purpose. This book captivated me to seek the answer to life's most important question while taking a journey with "The Four Faces." Traveling through diverse earthy terrains to find my answer, Retha helped me encounter a full cast of characters that continually offered biblical truths and insight into our human condition. Being both a dreamer and a lover of God's word, I thoroughly enjoyed how Retha deeply employed biblical symbolism throughout her book. A must read for anyone with a big God imagination!
