Being paid to explore sounded like a dream job.

From Norway to Madagascar, by campervan, taxi, boat and small plane Amelia Dalton hunted down remote archipelagos, deserted beaches and tiny local museums to create expedition holidays with a difference. On the way she was abandoned on an unpopulated island and escaped a hotel fire – and worse. Pages from my Passport is a memoir of adventures, disasters and occasional triumphs, all infused with Amelia’s unquenchable enthusiasm.

My reasons for DNFing:

Quote 1:
‘'It seems opening Tower Bridge is free, and I love the idea of stopping all the rush hour city traffic. Watching the bridge open from the water will be fun. I was smiling at the thought.
'Och, have you no sense of economy, girl? The bridge may be free, but what about all the charges once you're through? Lightermen and all. It'll be a closed shop, everything tightly controlled.'

HOW DID YOU PLAN A CRUISE WITHOUT CHECKING THINGS LIKE THIS! IN LONDON!! HOW THE HELL NO ONE TOLD YOU ABOUT IT BEFORE THIS WAS EVEN PLANNED!

Quote 2:

'Good morning, this is Gladstone & Sussex.' One of Rosemary's contacts wanted to meet me.
They had a group of twenty-five Americans booked for a tour entitled 'Castles and Gardens of Bohemia'.
It was a chance to become a tour leader in the Czech Republic.

SHE GOT THE JOB, CONGRATS! HOWEVER…

‘That's Ok, but I think it would be sensible for me to have a look round Prague at least before your clients arrive. I have been there but in the depths of a snowy winter.’

SO YOU SAID YES TO BECOMING A TOUR GUIDE IN A PLACE WHERE YOU’VE BEEN ONCE BEFORE AND ABOUT WHICH YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

‘Time for a new start for me too, even if it felt like climbing a mountain. So where exactly in
Europe was the Czech Republic?’

YOU SAID YOU HAD BEEN TO PRAGUE
WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHERE IN EUROPE IS CZECH REPUBLIC?!!!!!

"Amelia, Dick murmured, 'Deborah needs a restroom.'
'Right, yes of course.' For a moment I considered an empty bottle.
Ladies, if we get Deborah down, do you think we can make a screen? We can stand close together.
Squeezing up tightly, they linked arms, closed up and corralled the wheelchair.’

I GET IT, YOU DIDN’T KNOW ONE OF YOUR GUESTS IS GONNA BE A WHEELCHAIR USER BUT THE FACT THAT THIS THOUGHT EVEN CROSSED YOUR MIND IS ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS

A BOTTLE?! AN EMPTY BOTTLE?!

I really enjoyed the writing style of Amelia Dalton but some of her thoughts on the ‘Pages from my passport’ made me want to put my head through the wall. I understand trying new things in life but for fuck’s sake why would you go into things you know absolutely fuck all about?

For the record, I’m not trying to be a hater and I’m only reviewing this book with what I knew about Amelia from the book description, author description and what she says in her book.

Thank you NetGalley for giving me this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting and often amusing tales of events happening during Amelia’s time planning routes for cruise boats, planning the tours for passengers and as a travel guide. She visits and describes many remote, beautiful locations. Not many of her travels seem to go without incidents, like the time she was dropped off for a couple of hours by a little ferry boat on a remote Island of Norway, but the skipper forgot to pick her up until 24 hours later. Her journeys include visiting Egypt, Madagascar, Greece and other countries. A sketched map at the front of the book helps to visualise where in the world she is.
An interesting, entertaining read.

An adventure travel memoir.
“Misadventures, rather than actual disasters are usually more interesting than successes. I love introducing people to places and experiences they would not have come across on their own”
Entertaining account of exploring remote places.
It’s a series of adventures, with each chapter a story of a different country, finding unknown and unvisited places.
A honest and fun travel memoir.
Thanks @ameliadalton, @sandstonepress & @netgalley for the eARC.

These adventures are a great mix of being professional and muddling through. Amelia's experiences are well described, funny, and informative. I enjoyed her voyages at sea and journeys on land very much.
