⤿💌23/08/25 Screw Naoshi Usui 😬, I was only here for the plot! The plot: Kiyoka Kuduo 🙂↔️💘
Although I felt this book didn't have much happening, I was glad Miyo found her first real friend through Kaoruko, whom I did disliked at first because of her motives but by the end I had grown to like her. I did loathed every second whenever Usui appeared, can't wait to see what happens to him in the next book 😃
Meritocracy is a theme that runs through this fourth volume of “My Happy Marriage” by Akumi Agitogi. This volume is perhaps more of a transitional volume between the family drama of volume 3 and an impending conflict with Miyo’s relation, Naoshi Usui, in volume 5. The bulk of the book focuses on life in Kiyoka’s military unit and in particular on Kaoruchi Jinnouchi, who has been summoned to be Miyo’s body guard.
Kaoruchi is interesting, because she is everything that Miyo believes that she is not. She is a soldier, a noblewoman and capable of surviving in a man’s world. She is also one of Kiyoka’s former marriage candidates, which allows Miyo to doubt herself as Kiyoka’s fiancée. Kiyoka himself is entirely uninterested in Kaoruchi so he is oblivious to the difficult situation in which he has put both women and is even more clueless about Kaoruchi’s feelings for him. This is not a triangle but it is a tricky balance. In general, this volume is less about the feelings of the characters and more about their battle against Naoshi Usui and their attempt to keep Miyo safe.
There is a stunning betrayal at the end of the volume, but it is woven into their relationships in a psychologically realistic manner and it does allow the main antagonist, Usui, access to Miyo. Kiyoka shows himself as both the dashing hero and as the doting fiancé because of this stand-off so that works quite nicely as a climax. The denouement ties the loose ends together and allows the characters to forgive each other before moving forward …
This particular light novel focuses more on the Anti-Grotesquerie unit which was interesting as Miyo is now being protected by them and Kiyoka since her alleged father Usui wants to kidnap her for her dream-sight gift.
There are some new characters introduced including Miyo's first friend/rival Kaoruko and that dynamic I found pretty vital to Miyo's growth as she is developing feelings for Kiyoka and he is for her too although both are too reluctant to admit it to one another still.
I do wish there was some more romance development but judging from the next volume, it seems like we'll be getting that soon hopefully since they already kissed two times lol.
On another note, I do appreciate that the issue of sexism was brought up, as it makes sense for the time period and also because it wasn't too common for women to be in the military. The way that gets handled in the story was pretty realistic. I wouldn't say there were many happy moments in this volume since this one was pretty dark and bleak but at least our two leads are communicating better and Miyo is starting to stand up for herself instead of letting people protect her all the time.
My favorite volume so far. Love Miyo's character developpement and how she stand up for what she believes in. I'm so happy to see her change and heal at her own speed. And more than nothing else, I love Miyo and Kiyoka's relationship, they're the cutest couple ever ♡
I just cannot wait to watch the 2nd season of the anime version
I thought this would be the last novel of the series and desperately waited for their wedding but NO😭 anw still two more novels of my forever fav couple. This novel was very intense waiting for an ending of the emperor and Usui I just loved how when kiyoka came to save her and she said "thinking about you made me cry" my babies 💞

In this volume, Naoshi Usui, allegedly Miyo’s real father (he’s actually just a guy who used to be friends with Miyo’s mom) threatens and wants to kidnap Miyo, so Kiyoka decides it’s time for her to be next to him and assigns her a bodyguard: Kaoruko Jinnouichi, a young female soldier who used to be Kiyoka’s optional betrothed.
They get along just fine and instead of being love rivals, Miyo befriends Kaoruko. Since they’re in the HQ of the Anti-Grotesque soldiers, she sees Kaoruko is being treated like she shouldn’t be there because she’s a woman and she “doesn’t have what it takes to be a soldier”, which is complete BS. Some of the soldiers under Kiyoka’s command don’t agree with Miyo being there either, but that’s because of their fragile masculinity –when the time comes, they can’t even protect her from Usui.
Now, in this volume we explore a bit more of Kiyoka and Miyo’s relationship (they’ve kissed two times now!) and I can say for sure they’re my favorite couple ‘cause both of them bring the best in each other. Kiyoka is not as cold and harsh as he was before and Miyo has stepped out of an abusive environment and has slowly but surely learn her own worth.
This romance is a slow burn for sure but I’m in for the ride! Can’t wait to read the next volume as soon as I get my physical copy!
i really enjoyed how there was more about the anti-grotesqueries unit because i think all the supernatural, military and political aspects of the story are super interesting! Although i wouldve loved to see miyo grow more with her abilities here too
I continue to be obsessed and surprised by this story. Though in the beginning you think it's going to be one type of story, I feel like Miyo continues to grow in strength and confidence with each conflict she faces! I'm so excited to continue!
This series is getting so, so good!! I’m obsessed!! I love how intense the plot is getting. Though, I do hope our couple can catch a break to enjoy each others’ company soon, but I doubt the author will let us.😂

This was very much a filler book but was needed for future stories. I love how Miyo is finding her bravery. I wish though the entire book hasn’t been spoiled in the very beginning of the book. Also holy moly badly translated! Bad spelling, bad editing and even getting characters named misspelled. That’s why this book is a 3 in comparison to my five stars in the others.
I first came upon this from the anime version on Netflix. As I'm reading the story I'm getting more and more disappointed. I don't like the obsession Miyo had towards Kaoruko. It almost seemed like the writer was trying to groom an idea to the readers and I did not like that. The idea they were grooming is that 'a good wife will keep friendly terms with an ex of her spouse and be their good friends otherwise she's an evil woman'. In my opinion, you are free to decide who you want in your relationship and how you feel about particular people. You're only evil when you commit an evil act. Until you haven't done anything wrong no one should judge you harshly.
Or maybe it isn't the original writer but the translator who is trying to convey this message? Who knows?
Anyway, I have to continue reading this series for research and I have a feeling that I'll be more disappointed. The anime version on Netflix is superb but I'm having a feeling that it'll lose its charm to me as these books are doing for me.

I personally think the biggest point positive about this series is Miyo/Kiyoka and their romance, when someone (Kiyoka in this case) of them isn't here during a long period of time of the novel like here I'm feeling unmotivated because they're the reason I'm keeping reading.
The magic world-building isn't that developed or complexe, it's pretty simple if you compare with anothers animes or fantasy books. You have people with a Gith/and others who don't, Gith people usually work at the Army/Security of the country, that's it.
We have more characters introduced in this volume.
I'm also thinking something, "Would I love that much this series, if I haven't watching first the anime on Netflix?". Probably not. It's good. It's like a fast-paced romance that you really can enjoy more when you need something fast to go through with easy vocabulary because you're tired or have too many test on school/university, or you're on a reading slump (like me now).
#Short book (series of short books) #Japanese ancient - Asian historical romance with a small dosis of fantasy. Like a Romantasy. #Third person - Omniscient narrator.
Final thoughts: I'm glad that I continued no matter how many times I wanted to just toss my laptop aside as more and more misogyny was thrown at Miyo, as well as Kaoruko being nasty towards her at times!
There was SLIGHT redemption towards the end for how badly Miyo was treated by the Anti-Grotesquerie Team, but not nearly enough to satisfy.
Also, love finally seeing love blooming even more!
Final rating: 3.5* due to multiple spelling errors, wrong names being used, and gross misogyny.
Halfway through thoughts: Kaoruko is hiding a Big Secret from Kiyoka and I am trying to read as fast as possible to see if she gave in to
Secondly, the blatant sexism and misogyny is absolutely disgusting and I really wish that this was dealt with. Poor Miyo, she's just coming into confidence and finding her way after all the abuse she suffered from her father, stepmother, and half-sister, and now she has to deal with all of the men talking crap about her and Kaoruko. I'm starting to skim pages because it's just downright disgusting.
4/5📚 1/5🌶️ Kiyoka is the best!!! Miyo turned more and more into a doormat.
Ahh but god damn it why is he so cute and thoughtful and attentive and just perfect, he charms me of my feet every chance he gets!
I’m starting to get a bit annoyed at Miyos behavior. We’re in book 4 out of 8 and she still lets people walk all over her, gets immediately self conscious when someone says something negative instead of holding her head high and breaks down whenever she is faced with disrespect. And almost every fucking person is constantly rude to her!! Give this woman a break dear lord, the storyline of her being faced with someone who doesn’t respect her and insults her, is so overdone. This was used in every book so far and we definitely reached a breaking point. “Still, she couldn’t bring herself to stop, because seeing Miyo in pain brought her a sense of relief.” Wtf is this?? Last book it was Kiyoka’s mother, now it’s the first friend Miyo has ever made. Are you kidding me?? Enough OWD, PLEASE!!!
Miyo is faced with some questions about her own heritage while also confronting some not so comfortable ideas about Kiyoka's own past. Fortunately, it seems she is exactly who she thought she was all along (aside from the having a unique Gift that she didn't know about for most of her life). Kiyoka seems to either hit or miss when it comes to trying to read Miyo, though he's certainly become much more openly affectionate if nothing else since recognizing his own feelings. Miyo seems to come to the same conclusion herself briefly, but also seems to talk herself out of it and insist she doesn't really know her own feelings or how to identify them. Poor girl is going to wear herself into the ground again. The ending for this installment is both happy, if not peaceful, and yet also ominous at the same time. Usui does not seem to be all that sane, even if he is very powerful and seems to be two steps ahead most of the time.

This volume held everything you would come to expect from this series. The action was well-paced and well-written, just exciting enough that I didn’t feel like I was trudging through it to get to the good parts. I enjoyed reading the full novel. In terms of the romance, I found that the pace was consistent with the previous novels which meant I would have liked for there to be more of that. Still, Miyo and Kiyoka were able to bridge another small gap between them and I was able to see them growing as individuals as well. The introduction of the character Kaoruko was interesting and I liked the roles she fulfilled in the novel. I would have liked to see more of her background and turmoils, but this was still a great way to include her in the rest of the cast. I look forward to reading more about all of these characters and what the future has in store for them.
3.5⭐ This volume focuses more on the Anti-Grotesquerie Unit, as Miyo is being put under their protection. We are introduced to Kaoruko, who has been assigned as Miyo's bodyguard. It was actually interesting to see that we find out pretty early on about the marriage candidate thing, and how this dynamic actually pushed Miyo to think more on her own developing feelings.
We also see a bit of sexism in this volume, as Kaoruko is one of the rare females in the unit. Considering the time period this is set in, it makes quite a bit of sense. Especially because it was not a common thing for women to be in the military at all. That being said, I'm happy to see character development in Miyo--the girl is finally starting to stand up for herself!
The Novels feel a bit slow to me, but that might be because I've been watching S2 of the anime as it airs, so I more or less know where the story is going, but it's still fun to spot the differences. haha.
Overall I'd say I really enjoyed this volume. It was about time Miyo made an actual friend, someone around her age and that isn't part of the family, so I'm happy about seeing a different side of her, and how it made her come out of her shell a little bit more. Of course, the blatant and disgusting sexism soured the experience a bit. I'm not saying it shouldn't have happened because it does make a lot of sense in universe, but it was frustrating to read; especially because Miyo only perceived the hatred towards Kaoruko as being unreasonable, but not when it was directed at her, she's such an unreliable narrator... In any case I'm interested to see how the plot develops, it seems like there are quite a few things cooking with the main antagonist but they have yet to be made clear to us. I can't wait to see more interactions of our sweet pairing and the wedding soon!
Miyo and Kiyoka had been accosted by Usui as they were returning from the Kudou manor. So in this fourth book, Kiyoka has to go to extremes to protect Miyo from this new threat. What I really liked about this book is that it immediately picks up after the third one. So we see the immediate sweet relationship that is building between Miyo and Kiyoka. Springtime has already been selected for their wedding. And now they have the winter to get through, but ... they have to stop the Gifted Communion first. This time, a new friend is introduced to Miyo too. She finally gets a bestie and I loved Kaoruko because she seemed to just totally get Miyo. Kaoruko never got irritated by Miyo's insecurities or her fears.
The first 3 books were amazing and then this one comes along and I'm disappointed. I'm wondering if it's just a translating to English thing though, but Miyo's giggles (tee hee) annoyed the hell out of me. I don't think it fits her character and I get she's supposed to be more confident around Kiyoka, but I think the giggling was unnecessary. I didn't like how Kiyoka behaved either. If Miyo is changing because of Kiyoka, it seems Kiyoka should be changing too, so while his actions in this would have made more sense in book 1, they seemed colder in book 4 as it appears he hasn't softened a bit.
Hopefully book 5 will be better as I am still invested in the story.
miyo has shown considerable character growth since the first book but i wish she would stop being such a doormat! she stresses over the tiniest little things and apologises when it’s not her fault!! miyo pls 😭
also good to know the army is full of sexist and misogynistic idiots!! i wish miyo or karuoko stood up for themselves or there were military repercussions! my blood was boiling when i read those scenes and i needed them to be punished!! hopefully this is addressed in later volumes.
On their trip home from the Kudou family villa, Miyo and Kiyoka narrowly escape an ambush from the leader of the Gifted Communion, Naoshi Usui, who claims to be Miyo’s father. Fearing that Miyo will be targeted again, Kiyoka insists that she accompany him to his workplace from now on and appoints a female soldier named Kaoruko as her bodyguard. Though Miyo is unsettled by the revelation that Kaoruko was one of Kiyoka’s previous marriage candidates, the two women gradually warmup to each other and become friends. But can their bond survive the hidden threat coming for Miyo…?
This was a great new installment in this series. I enjoyed the commentary on in work-sexism. Again, Miyo’s growth is always a pleasure to follow, particularly in following Kiyoka’s growth with her as well. They are both great characters to follow and root for. I loved the new characters which were introduced, and the new in-depth information we got for the Anti-Grotesquerie Unit. Can’t wait for the next novel.
