Although I've always loved tawdry manga tales featuring
Japanese male hosts catering to established, older women,
this anthology offered more substance to 'themes' I've come to associate with those books.

Rich Girls Do Cry is the jewel of this trio. While the two additional stories hold their own, Rich Girls deserves to be recognized for the innovative, original and progressive story it proved to be. I was thrilled to read this type of story, and pleased at how well this author handled it from beginning to the end.

And so will you.

I bought this book and in two days I finished it, so good I just couldn't put it down. I thought "A Holiday to Remember" was fantastic, but this was better. The first story "Rich Girls Cry Too" just blew me away and I'm quite jealous I didn't come up with it first, and is my favorite story of all three. It would've been better if it was a longer and a novel of its own. Seeing how the author came up with ways to incorporate Japanese hosting to the stories was very interesting because it wasn't cliche. The second was what I call "classic vampire erotica" and I loved it, it was sexy and sweet. I applaud Shiree McCarver on yet another great book and look forward to her future works.

Warning! Cursing, Mild Spoilers And General WTF-ery To Follow
This review is only for the first story, Rich Girls Cry Too

Shiree McCarver is an author whose work I have enjoyed in the past. When I read that she'd written a love story between a black heroine and a Japanese transgendered hero I *Squeed* with joy. Oh, this had to be good!! Good lawd please let it be good.

I'm going to start off with what I liked. Rich Girls Cry Too is the story of Lizzie and Yume who were childhood friends in boarding school. They lose touch (due to Yume disappearing) and Yume resurfaces years later as the man she was meant to be, Yashiro. This is the story of the soulmates reconnecting and falling in love as adults.

I liked that Yashiro was transgender and that all aspects of his transformation were explained and discussed by him and Lizzie. He talks about his surgeries, what he had to do to afford them, the pain he went through to become who he was always meant to be. The whole transgender subject was really delved into and handled so well. It was pretty damn awesome to tell the truth.

Also, there's discussion about how Lizzie loved Yashiro even when he was in his female body and that it's the person she loves not just the gender. I LOVED that aspect of the story. LOVED.

So, now that I've gone into what I liked, I'm going to go off on what I HATED.

When Lizzie and Yume (who would grow up to be Yashiro) are eleven they spend a holiday at Lizzie's parent's house. Lizzie knows that her parents have sex in the basement while pretending to do laundry, so she brings Yume down there and they watch her parents have sex and they both get turned on by it.

STOP. Stop right. Fucking. There.

First of all, these kids are ELEVEN. I don't want to read about small children getting turned on. I don't care what anyone says; that's not right. Second, those are Lizzie's parents for Christ's sake!! Not only am I reading about an eleven year old getting turned on but I'm reading about an eleven year old getting turned on by her own parents. WTFing...just...WTF!!!

I was SO DISTURBED. I'm not even kidding, I think I got a little nauseous and didn't quite believe what I was reading. I don't think the author meant for it to come across that way but, to me, it was just really inappropriate.

After I got past that bit of WTF-ery, I moved on...but then I reached the part of the story where Lizzie's best friend drugs her and Yashiro kidnaps her on her wedding day. He then ties her hands and feet to the bed and waits for her to wake up. When Lizzie wakes up all she wonders is whether or not she was too drugged up on valium and alcohol to remember her wedding and maybe she'd slept through some kinky sex.

I understand that this is fiction but...ummm...really?

Dear Lizzie,

Let me give you a tip. When you wake up naked and tied to a bed and you have no idea where you are...don't just assume kinky sex. Maybe your first thought should be that someone kidnapped your ass and may be planning to rape you. Why? Because YOU DON"T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. YOU'RE NAKED! YOU'RE TIED UP, GODAMMIT!! DON'T YOU FUCKING WATCH LAW & ORDER????!!!!!!

Aggghhh @#$%^*&!
Laddie

Oh man, I got all annoyed just thinking about it.

So, What do I think of this story when all is said and done? To tell the truth I don't even know. I loved the transgender part of it so much and think that's what most people who read the story focused on. Those two parts that I hated though...oh, I hate them so hard.

I gave this three stars but I'm very conflicted about those three stars. Very conflicted. *sigh*

Scalding Hot

What can I say? This anthology is cutting edge, sexy, out of the box, and is well-written. Shiree has a great understanding of human sexuality and gender, and I can not express how much I loved the first story. It was EPIC. This is my first time reading a story with the H being ftm. It was definitely a great story to explain how we are connected to the spirit of people beyond biology and gender expression.

The second story has to be my second favorite. I love paranormal stories so this one was short, hot, but still well developed.

The final story is definitely a short that is cut and dry, but is very well done and to the point. It's about raw sex, but with character development.

I definitely suggest this book, especially if you love Japanese men and you're open to genderqueer or gender fluidity.

I was in the mood to re-read this and I'm glad I did so now I can pen a fuller review. While the last two stories in this anthology were so-so (and the middle vampire one was a pretty yawn-worthy vampire erotica, though the last story about a very different Host Club was sexy and cute), it is the first story Rich Girls Cry Too which truly sets a high standard for edgy and unexpected romance--a Shiree McCarver trademark, along with her penchant for Asian male romantic heroes paired with black female heroines (something she does far better than pretty much anyone else out there because she respects Asian culture and does her best to get it right). And even though I can be a stickler for spelling and grammar issues, there are times where a story just draws me in such a way where I put my inner English teacher with the iron gray bun and red pencil to bed. This is one of those times. Ms. McCarver has a way with characters and storylines that more established authors would do well to emulate. She takes the kinds of risks that jaded readers like myself absolutely love and richly reward.

A transgendered male (female to male) romance hero IS very risky. Let's face it, romancelandia has its sacred cows and even getting the genre to diversify the heroines/heroes has been like pulling teeth without novocaine. So here comes Ms. McCarver with the story of Yoshihiro (formerly Yume) and the love of his life, the wealthy but unhappy and soon to be married to a man she does not love, Elizabeth Banks. Ye gads, did I just say transgendered hero? I can just imagine the fail and eyerolls.

Yume now Yoshihiro has loved Lizzie from the time they were students at an expensive boarding school, but just one problem: Yoshihiro was Yume, Lizzie's best friend whose feelings ran far deeper than she could admit. She suffered not just unrequited love, but from gender dysphoria. Unbeknownst to her, Lizzie's feelings for Yume ran just as deep, which caused quite a bit of uncertainty. Then suddenly Yume returns to Japan and though she promises to keep in touch, it's a promise she cannot keep, though Lizzie continues to send emails to the person she thinks is Yume. Meanwhile, Yume is undergoing her transformation and the story doesn't skimp on the gory details which are revealed once the reborn Yoshihiro reveals the years of painful surgery and the disappointment from his family, as well as his history of working at host clubs and dealings with the Yakuza in order to pat for gender reassignment surgery. It is clear thus author did her homework on the subject because it feels real without reading like an info dump.

Yoshihiro appears at Lizzie's pre-wedding party though Lizzie has no idea who the gorgeous Japanese man is (though somewere she feels recognition). Once his identity is revealed, things really turn topsy-turvy and everything she thought she knew is no more. Lizzie finds herself in a limosine driven by her best friend then passing out. When she awakens she's tied to the bed and remembers nothing but wonders if she had kinky sex while asleep. No, just the love of your life willing to risk her wrath to prove she doesn't love the man she's set to marry the next day. Meanwhile, we're treated to some smoking hot sex scenes in which Yoshihiro proves he's very much male and Lizzie learns the man she was about to marry lacked any sort of bedroom skills.

I guess the only problems I had was how quickly certain situations, one with the jilted bridegroom and the other with Lizzie's media mogul father, were wrapped up. I found both to be rather unsatisfactory, but also a chance for Ms. McCarver to revisit this tale in the future. After all a jilted bridegroom with a mean streak just might seek revenge...

I just got through reading "Dirty Little Scerets" and i have to tell you that I loved it. My favorite story among them was Rich Girls Cry Too. .. OMG. It was so unexpected, yet, sensuous. Well done. Lately I've been fascinated with Asian men, and those stories just add to the lore for me. . . .a job WELL DONE!
