A Candle for Malka

Rate this book
A Candle for Malka is a bit of a hybrid beast; part cosmic horror, part science fiction… and all heart, dealing with a future where the Earth’s natural resources have been depleted and—not content with destroying our own planet—big business is now expanding its search for oil further out into the solar system. The story is told from the viewpoints of a brother and sister, Malka and Bram Schulman, as each seek to navigate the results of one such expedition, to Europa. Except this story is so much more than that. It’s a story about family, faith, strength, greed and where it takes us...A Candle for Malka is a novella to be proud of.

I really enjoyed this sci-fi novella! It's beautifully written and reminds us of what corporate greed is capable of.The suspense had me at the edge of my seat, while the sections exploring grief and sibling relationships moved me very much.

If you were to tag this with only one label it would probably be sci fi and indeed the story does take place in outer space. On a plant called Europa to be precise. But it's much more than a simple space yarn. Told by Malka in the form of her video diaries, this is a tale of what can happen when corporate greed ellminates all moral considerations. It has mystery, intrigue, fantasy and horror. It's also short enough to provide a complete and thoroughly absorbing companion for your next plane or train journey. A great story, well told.

A really good Sci-fi novella on the subject of sibling relationships, Environmentalism and the evils of corporate greed
The story telling style in the form of journal entries works well for me, would happily recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick filler read
