Kari Hotakainen

He has two children with his wife, sound technician Tarja Laaksonen, whom he married in 1983. He has also worked as a copywriter and as a columnist for the Helsingin Sanomat.
His father, Keijo Hotakainen, worked as a storekeeper and photographer while his mother, Meeri Ala-Kuusisto, worked as a sales clerk. Kari Hotakainen passed his matriculation examination in 1976 and graduated from Rautalampi High School the same year. He has a Bachelor of Arts.
Hotakainen kicked off his career as an author in the beginning of the 1980s by writing poetry. His debut collection Harmittavat takaiskut (Unfortunate setbacks) was published in 1982. From poetry, Hotakainen moved on to writing books for children and young adults and then on to writing novels for adults. Tähden määrä on tietysti mielivaltainen. Suomea ei ole minun äidinkieltä, ja tämä on ensin suomen kielen kirja olen lukenut. Se oli hauska tapa harjoitella Suomea ja laajentaa minun sanasto. Epäilen, etta se oli hyvä kirja, ja toivon, etta jälkeen vuoden suomea opiskelemisen voin lukea sen jalleen ja ymmärtää sen subtekstia.
The number of stars is certainly arbitrary. Finnish isn't my mother tongue, and this is the first Finnish language book I've read. It was a pleasant way to practice Finnish and expand my vocabulary. I suspect that it was a good book, and I hope that after another year of studying Finnish I'll be able to read it again and actually understand the subtext. I also suspect that last long Finnish sentence of revealing to the reader the degree of subtext I'm able to pick up from a Finnish text. (<_<);;;

The Human Part is a tricky novel. The writing reads fluently, very much like an old woman telling the story and getting lost on the different tangents. Sometimes she tells too much and sometimes too little. However, what I found lacking in the novel was a red thread – like the one in the cover – that would have tied the individual stories together. According to the blurb in the back the novel is essentially about capitalism, buying and selling things, the value of our life and experiences. Perhaps the read thread is the idea of how money and wealth affects us all? I honestly don't know.

Tää oli sellaista tasaista hyvää, ihanan kuivalla huumorilla valeltu hyvä iltalukeminen. Ainoa varsinainen miinus on sama, mitä aika monelle tietyn ikäiselle suomalaiselle mieskirjailijalle saa antaa, nimittäin n-sanan jatkuvasta käytöstä: käytön tarkoitus oli kuvata näiden henkilöhahmojen vanhakantaisia asenteita, mutta saman efektin voi tehdä ilman tuollaista sanaa ja kieltä käyttämällä. Muutoin oikein hyvä!

Ihmisen osa lähti kirjastosta mukaani, koska menin kirjastoon ajatuksenani lainata kotimaista, suomeksi kirjoitettua kirjallisuutta tasapainottamaan kohtuu jenkkivetoista lukemistoani. Minulla oli etukäteen epämääräinen ajatus siitä, että pidän Hotakaisen kirjoitustyylistä, vaikka ainoa todellinen kosketuspinta löytyykin kaukaa lukioajoilta, jolloin luin Buster Keaton - elämä ja teot, mikä on jotain novellin ja romaanin välimaastosta. En muista kirjasta muuta kuin sen, että nauroin. Mitään muuta en Hotakaiselta ollut tähän mennessä lukenut enimmäkseen sen takia, että mikään synopsis ei ole juuri kutsunut lukemaan. Nyt kuitenkin päätin vastapalautettujen kirjojen hyllystä inspiroituneena napata matkaani tämän (koska kirja oli ihan siinä nenän edessä, ja se näytti nopealukuiselta), ja katsoa onko Hotakainen oikeasti niin hyvä kirjoittaja kuin olen antanut itseni kuvitella.
Ensimmäisen kolmanneksen jälkeen en voinut sanoa olevani mitenkään järkyttävän vakuuttunut. Kirja ei sinänsä tuntunut huonolta, ja pidin kirjailijan äänestä ja kielestä jota hän käyttää. Salmen ääni on myös uskottava ja hän onkin ainoa kiinnostava hahmo tähän mennessä. Missään vaiheessa kirja ei vielä luonut tunnetta, että pakko jatkaa lukemista vielä hetki. Pikemminkin etenin sillä ajatuksella, että no luen vielä kappaleen verran ja sitten saan lopettaa. Ei edelleenkään siksi, että kirja olisi huonosti kirjoitettu, minua ei vaan millään tavalla kiinnostanut, mitä Salmen epäonnistuneet lapset tekevät tai ajattelevat.
Toisen kolmanneksen jälkeen en vieläkään ollut 100%:sen vakuuttunut kirjasta, mutta halusin kuitenkin lukea sen loppuun saadakseni tietää mikä on tämä Suuri Asia joka Helenalle oli tapahtunut. Jotenkinhan se liittynee limanuljaska-Kimmoon, mutta aika monessa kohdassa päätään on nostanut myös ajatus siitä, että asian keskiössä on Helenan lapsi Sini. Tässä vaiheessa olin jo aika varma siitä mikä kirjan keskiössä todellisuudessa lymyili, vaikka asiaa tuotiinkin esiin kierrellen ja kaarrellen.
Kirjan loppuun päästyäni pidin siitä enemmän kuin puolessa välissä olisin ajatellut pitäväni, vaikka vieläkään en voi sanoa kirjaan rakastuneeni. Eniten kirjassa häiritsi lopulta ehkä rakenne, joka ei omalla kohdallani toiminut. Se oli liian rikkonainen vetääkseen minua mukaansa, vaikka tiedostankin että se oli ihan harkittu valinta. Hotakaisen kieli oli kevyttä, paikoin lakonista ja juuri niin kuivan humoristista kuin muistelinkin. Hahmoista Salme ja Paavo olivat vakuuttavimmat ja kaikki muut lähinnä ärsyttivät. Kimmoa oli helppo inhota.

Nyt ei tämä Hotakainen oikein osunut... Jaarittelevaa kerrontaa ostamisesta ja myymisestä, itsepetoksesta ja kuinka vaikea läheisimmillekin on välillä oikeasti puhua. Ihmisen osaan kai kuuluu, että haluamme esittää aina itsemme parhaassa mahdollisessa valossa. En kokenut, että tämä kirjallisesta metatasokikkailusta huolimatta oikeastaan toi suomalaisen arjen kärsimysnäytelmän kuvaamiseen kauheasti uutta. Plussaa ehdottomasti vaihtelevasti henkilökatraasta ja näiden omaäänisyydestä!

Obupna knjiga. Zelo redko se mi zgodi, da me knjiga, ki jo knjižničarji nadvse priporočajo in je znana kot odlično delo, tako razočara. Ta pa se mi je na vseh aspektih, ki jih sicer pri knjigi vrednotim (dodelanost likov, zgradba, sporočilnost in inovativnost zgodbe, stil pisanja), zdela povsem podpovprečna. Ne vem, ali gre morda za izgubljenost s prevodom ali pa jo je težko razumeti v današnjem času, ki je vendarle precej drugačen od desetletja, v katerem je knjiga nastala, hkrati pa je preteklo še premalo časa, da bi imeli ustrezno orisane zgodovinske vzorce. Zdela se mi je tako nedodelana, nedokončana, površna in zmedena. Na živce mi grejo zgodbe, ki za potrebe vzbujanja interesa in namišljene veličine besedila izberejo izjemno tragičen dogodek, nato pa (milo rečeno) še tega dvojega ne dostavijo.

Mielestäni moniäänisyys oli kirjan heikkous: olisi ollut parempi, jos tarina olisi kerrottu, alun tapaan, vain entisen lankakauppiaan näkökulmasta. Lankakauppias on hieman stereotyyppinen tomera suomalaismummo, mutta tämän suoraviivaisia ajatuksia oli kiinnostavaa kuunnella Ritva Valkaman lukemina.

Enpä taaskaan välttynyt kirjalta, jossa on monta kertojaa - tässä tarinassa niitä taitaa olla peräti vähän toistakymmentä. Ihmisen osassa se ei kuitenkaan tuntunut kikkailulta, ja tarina eteni sujuvasti kertojasta toiseen. Hyväntuulinen kirja, joka sai minut hymähtämään vähän väliä, ja pari kertaa herkesin jopa nauramaan. Ja jossain vaiheessa hävetti niin paljon hahmojen puolesta, että oli pakko laittaa kirja alas. Hotakaismaista oivallusta puhtaimmillaan. Tässä maassa voi vapaasti puhua vain säästä, se on kaikille sama eli huono. Neljä tähteä.

Ihan hävettää tunnustaa, että tämä oli ensimmäinen Hotakaiseni. Ei varmastikaan viimeinen, niin hyvin kuiva huumori upposi. Tarina oli yllättävän traaginen, mutta sitä onneksi pehmensi kirjailijan inhimillinen ote.

Life is made of cycles and sometimes you are down in the shadow sometimes up in the light. A kind of Taoist perspective that author in the book has and not just. A dark story not without humor. Hotakainen is a master craftsman commenting the human condition and he's own art as well.

This was a very fast read. Only about 270 pages so its light work. Not to discredit the extremely dynamic writing of Hotakainen. This is not an in depth review, just my surface level thoughts I came up with while reading the book.
The book follows a family, the parents who are elders at this point, kids and kids partners who are around their 40s to 50s (plus some extra which is a spoiler). The characters inner dialogues are written in the chapters surrounding each of them. It starts off with the mother/grandmother of the family, Salme, agreeing to tell her life story to an author, being offered 7000€. Throughout the book we learn about the characters jobs and hardships. The storyline surrounds a tragedy that happens with the eldest daughter, Helena. It’s never directly said what this tragedy is but its heavily implied and becomes clear by the end of the book.
The inner monologues are very accurately finnish. Its full of this inherent finnish melancholy which i very much feel living here my whole life. Its almost humorous in way, making fun of every day things in the way a finn would understand. Im not making any sense but iykyk.
I found myself bored reading this book to some level. I might be too much of a stickler in my want for fantasy and whimsy in the books I read. Though this was a fast read and extremely good and at its core i appreciate the ingenius writing, I’m just not sure it was completely my genre prefence. But its about expanding your horizons right?

Yes, as some reviewers have noted, the book is a bit disjointed. That didn't bother me - the writing is terrific and the episodes left a mark on this reader. Let me quote from an extended passage (with my deletions for the sake of brevity) in which a woman working for a large corporation meets a successful man angling for her:
"Helena... wished, although she sensed she was wishing in vain, that he would follow Helena's five-point list of don'ts:
Don't claim you made all of your money with your own two hands.
Don't claim you saw further than other people and that's why you're standing on the top of the heap now.
Don't claim your success has nothing to do with the caprices of capitalism.
Don't claim that you're an independent, unique individual.
And don't say that you know a good restaurant near here that the rabble hasn't caught wind of yet and that has an absolutely mind-blowing wine list.
Kimmo made all five mistakes in ten minutes but Helena didn't pour cold water over him. She just let him talk...She listened understanding that this is how it went if you let it loose: unbridled capitalism blazed exultantly...it pissed on moderation and curtsied to excess...Kimmo was the offspring of an ideology without ideals."

Mindössze két dolog hiányzik ebből a könyvből, de az a kettő nagyon: konfliktus és történet.
A regény nem egy elmesélhető, összefüggő történettel dolgozik, sokkal inkább tűnik novellafüzérnek, amelynek elemei az elképzelhető leglazább ok-okozatisággal kapcsolódnak egymáshoz (ha egyáltalán). A szereplők elbeszélnek, sőt el-élnek egymás mellett, senki nem érti a másikat, mindenki emészti magát valamin. Amit többen leírtak már itt előttem is: életidegen és rideg az összes fejezet és az összes szereplő légköre, teljesen természetellenes, ahogy egymásnak (vagy inkább maguknak) beszélnek, és idegenek a történések is – melyekből így nem is tud összeállni a történet. Cselekményszálak futnak céltalanul, ki tudja merre, leginkább semerre.
Mindez azért bosszantó, mert az író stílusa és a fordítás is remek, a fülszövegben ígért alapfelvetés pedig nagyon izgalmas. Persze el lehetne indítani egy eszmefuttatást arról, hogy amit olvastunk, tulajdonképpen kinek is az agyszüleménye és mennyiben igaz – de mit számít? Ettől semmivel nem lesz érdekesebb a 300 oldalban összedobált, kis részleteiben gyakran érdekes és elgondolkodtató, összképét tekintve mégis alaktalan és öncélú… micsoda? Kéne ide egy szó. Mert a 'történet' nem elég találó. (Vagy csak én nem voltam elég posztmodern hangulatban.)

Dammit Maclehose are so good! They've just published another cracker of a story.
The Human Part by Finnish writer Kari Hotakainen, is translated into English by Owen F. Witesman. Elderly woman Salme Sinikka Malmikunnas agrees to share her life story with a writer she meets at a book festival. The writer, who is suffering a severe block, is grateful for the new material and Salme is grateful for the money. However things don't go as smoothly as both hope as Salme's life fails to provide the desired amount of drama and the writer begins to take liberties.
This is an issue that doesn't sit well with Salme, who is not a fan of fiction and has insisted from the beginning that she will only tell her story if it will be "printed word for word". I was intrigued by the premise but fell for it because of the writing. Hotakainen was awarded the Finlandia Prize for Fiction in 2002 for his book Juoksuhaudantie (Battle Trench Avenue).
But never mind all that, the thing that makes this book so good is the perfect balance Hotakainen strikes between humour and gravitas. I devoured it and found it quite unexpectedly moving.

However things don't go as smoothly as both hope as Salme's life fails to provide the desired amount of drama and the writer begins to take liberties.
This is an issue that doesn't sit well with Salme, who is not a fan of fiction and has insisted from the beginning that she will only tell her story if it will be "printed word for word". I was intrigued by the premise but fell for it because of the writing. Hotakainen was awarded the Finlandia Prize for Fiction in 2002 for his book Juoksuhaudantie (Battle Trench Avenue).
But never mind all that, the thing that makes this book so good is the perfect balance Hotakainen strikes between humour and gravitas. I devoured it and found it quite unexpectedly moving.

What is the world coming to and what is it to be human in this day and age?
Is it possible to feel like an outsider in your home country? Is it even a possibility to feel anything other than an outsider upon settling elsewhere ?

How do we, as humans, let corporations and the rich dictate the essence of life when freedom to do as we please, given enough money, surely takes the joy out of all things?
The human part raises lots of pertinent and and important questions, it’s narratives plays with an unreliable narrator and the novel feels like it could be, at times, semi auto-biographical or pure fiction.
I haven’t read much Finnish lit but My Cat Yugoslavia brings up similar themes and topics of discussion.
This is a good book and if you happen to be an immigrant in a Scandinavian country, add a star.

In The Human Part an elderly woman called Salme Sinikka Malmikunnas agrees to sell her life story to an author she meets at a book festival, on the condition that “everything that I say will be printed word for word”. Salme insists on the truth. It is why she appreciates non-fiction and despises fiction:
But as the reader progresses in The Human Part you come to doubt Salme’s truthfulness. Or is the tragedy that is the cause for Salme’s husband’s (Paavo) silence, and the less than the claimed-to-be perfect lives of Salme’s children, only the imagination of the author?
The Human Part is a book about the absurdities of modern life, without telling the reader that life was better for Salme’s generation, or that there is a truly right way to live or to view life. I think that showing us several views and sides of modernity, without skimming over the hurt and sadness that comes with all lives, is the real strength of this novel.
Hotakainen manages to find the perfect blend of satire and seriousness that enables the reader to laugh at the way we live, but to simultaneously feel understood in the difficulties we face. The whole book just oozes humanity, both in showing us the faulty and sometimes ugly side of human life and opinion, and in showing us love and understanding. And in doing so he doesn’t shy away from the big and pertinent questions of our time – for one of the dominant themes is the economic crisis that Finland, and so many other countries, face.
I laughed at the irony of a novel starting out with having a character insult the very notion of fiction. I smiled at the fact that Salme so poignantly points out how absurd the notion of selling ideas instead of actual items is to her worldview, but then turning the whole thing on the head by having Salme sell her own story. Again, I admire Hotakainen for being able to strike such a great balance between allowing us to laugh at ourselves, at our society, without becoming tiring in the novel’s satire, and without making the reader feel that he isn’t taking his characters or the reader seriously.
However, there were things I had my doubts about in the novel at first. For one, there is Salme’s use of the word “negro” for the partner of one of the children. There is the portrayal of said character, Biko, through the eyes of Salme that is tinged with the sort of hidden racism that you could almost come to expect in some European societies. There were moments when those comments make you stop and wonder how you should feel about this being such an integral part of the story. However, upon reflection and knowing what follows in the book, I feel that these moments of almost cringe-worthy comments make the painful and the hidden stereotypes more visible. I feel Hotakainen is holding up a mirror by having Salme and her husband express these views. And he gives us reason to think, from the very start, that Salme’s views are not equal to the right or the truthful. In allowing Biko to tell his own story, to have his own voice, and by having him counter stereotypes, the discomfort I felt at first was gradually taken away.
In a similar vein there is another character, Kimmo, who voices very classist opinions. Being rich himself, having sold his company in the years when the economy was booming, Kimmo one day decides he should become familiar with the lives of “the rabble”, and continues to express opinions that dehumanize the people poorer than me in insisting on using words like “the rabble” and “the being”, which allows for some fun and subversive interactions between Kimmo and the people he meets in the poorer neighbourhood he travels to.
It took a while to see the novel in this way, instead of starting and stopping because I wasn’t sure what to make of all these characters othering each other. In the end, I feel Hotakaianen did a good job of enabling us to see the many ways in which we are often quick to judge, and to dehumanize others that we do not know, before leading us into a situation that shows us how different characters can draw together in times of need.
In its satire of society, in holding up a mirror to the absurdities and things taken for granted in contemporary life, I felt The Human Part was one of the more succesful books I have read. And yet.. I never really felt a personal interest in the story beyond this mirror-quality. And I couldn’t quite figure out how the storyline of the human tragedy, that is alluded to throughout the book and revealed towards the end, fitted with the rest of the themes in The Human Part. I liked and appreciated how Hotakainen allows us to come to know several situations of several characters, how he allows them all to express their views, but during my reading of the book there was often a disconnect that wasn’t resolved until the very end. Unfortunately, this is why I couldn’t quite like the book as much as I wished.
By the way, don’t you just love the cover? It was retained from the Finnish edition. I really like the pen-drawing feel of it. And how, if you look at it closely upon finishing the book, it includes so many of the characters and scenes in the novel.

It has always irritated me that they are taken seriously, that people get so immersed in them and listen so carefully to the people who write them. One of the best things about reading translations is getting a view of the world through the eyes of another culture. The original book is written in Finnish. This translation seems to convey that sense of otherness that comes from those books from elsewhere but the rest is a bit of a mixed bag. The main character is quirky but not in an interesting way. She reminded me of Granny in the The Clampitts for that all-knowing, self-righteous, abrasive manner.
The other characters are more believable and at more than one point I thought the book was about people who have great deal of inner emptiness to contend with. A study in dissatisfied lives or simply people having to deal with a heartless culture. The culture we all live but stripped of any of the superficial niceties. It is black indeed.
I only gave it three stars because I felt that it didn't really go anywhere. It had an end that didn't really come from the beginning. But wait, no real story? characters inner thoughts merging with the real world? odd structure? it must literature! On star too many!

Tarina Malmikunnasten elämästä, kertojana etenkin äiti Salme, entinen lankakauppias, joka tapaa kirjamessuilla kirjailijan ja myy tälle elämänsä 7 000 eurosta voidakseen kustantaa tyttärensä hoidon. Välillä näkökulmaksi vaihtuu aikuisten lasten Helenan, Pekan ja Maijan todellisuus. Hyvin ei mene kenelläkään, mutta aika ajoin sentään riittävän hyvin. Elämä onneksi koostuu paitsi menetyksistä, surusta ja epäonnistumisista, myös välittämisestä - vaikka tämän perheen tapa osoittaa yhteenkuuluvuutta ja tunkea onkin hyvin lakoninen.
Hotakainen kirjoittaa järkytyksiä kokevasta perheestä, mutta myös mm. työelämän arvoista, pienyrittäjyydestä, järjestelmän ulkopuolelle pudonneen ahdingosta ja ylpeydestä sekä sanoista ja puheesta ja kielen merkityksistä. Mukana on runsaasti huumoria, ja Valkaman tapa lukea tuo sekä sitä että elämän ankaruutta hienosti esiin. Sen verran usein käytetään n-sanaa, että huomaa julkaisuajankohdasta kuluneen jonkin verran aikaa. Kirja ei ole rasistinen, päinvastoin, mutta aika on ajanut tämänkaltaisen kielenkäytön ohi. Maailma muuttuu nopeasti.

En tykänny tästä kirjasta kauheesti, mikä yllätti mut kaiken tän saaman ylistyksen jälkeen. Arvostin alussa sen näennäistä konseptia: äiti kertoo lapsistaan ja osoittautuu, ettei se tiedäkään niiden elämästä juuri mitään. Mut sit tajusin et tää ei ollutkaan se keskeisin konflikti vaan koko ajan tunnuttiin lisäämään jotain uusia juonia ja teemoja. Lopulta mihinkään ei oikein päästy syventymään kunnolla. Keskeisiä teemoja oli suru, perhe ja yhteiskunnan tai kapitalismin armottomuus. Harmi vaan ettei noita eri teemoja oikein saatu yhdistettyä luonnollisesti. En tykänny Hotakaisen käyttämästä kielestä/kirjotustyylistä eikä huumori uponnut muhun. Kaiken kaikkiiaan vähän pettymys mun kohdalla. Täs oli kuitenki jotain tosi kauniita kohtia ja ajatuksia mitä oon kirjottanut alas:
"Maailman pahuus ei vähene jos sitä pahalla katsoo."
"Joskus tekisi mieli ottaa syliin nämä surkeat ja synkeät miehet ja sanoa: älä korosta pahuutta, älä kiellä hyvyyttä. Mene vain sinne elämän keskelle ja häikäisty."

Haluaisin pitää Hotakaisesta paljon enemmän, mutta toistaiseksi minut on vakuuttanut kunnolla vain Juoksuhaudantie.
Ihmisen osa alkaa kiinnostavasti, lässähtää sitten, ottaa ehkä hiukan lennokkaita askelia ja räjähtää sitten ilmaan jättäen lukijan sanattomaksi. Punaista lankaa ei ole kuin kansissa. Ärsytti, että kieli ei ole suoraa, vaikka Hotakaisen kirjoitustyylistä sinänsä pidänkin. Minusta kirja ei kerro siitä mistä sen piti kertoa. Tämän olisi voinut korjata kertojavalinnalla - siis sillä, että Salme kertoo oman versionsa, ja sitten näytetään totuus. Kirjailijaa ei olisi mielestäni tarvittu ollenkaan. Jäin miettimään myös sitä, että Hotakaisella tuntuu olevan sama henkilögalleria kirjasta toiseen. Verratkaa vaikka tätä ja Luonnon lakia! Aivan lopussa tarina tuntuu menevän turhan absurdiksi.

Een heel mooi boek, echt heel mooi... ik kon het gewoonweg niet opzij leggen.
Er zit vaart in de schrijfstijl en afwisseling in de vertelstandpunten. Inhoudelijk worden er heel wat filosofisch interessante standpunten en gedachten naar voor gebracht en de verschillende verhaallijnen zijn boeiend.
Neen, voor mij is dit geen satire om bij te schaterlachen, ook al worden inhoudelijk ernstige zaken dikwijls op een luchtige manier verteld... de satire is er wel en de kritiek op een samenleving die wegzinkt in roofdierkapitalisme slaat werkelijk de nagel op de kop.
In de figuur van Helena met haar dochtertje Sini, is er ook een link naar "De Huisman" (Trench Road) - Juoksuhaudantie, een vroeger werk van Hotakainen. Beide werken staan anders wel helemaal los van elkaar, dit terzijde.
Kari Hotakainen is mijn eerste kennismaking met de Finse literatuur en het smaakt naar meer.

А книга меня восхитила целостностью, в конце стало ясно, что все линии сошлись в единое целое. И главное трагическое событие осталась подчёркнутым, но не названным прямо - от того, что читатель догадался о нем, о том, кто и как произошло, через чувства и жизни разных людей - от этого ещё больней и ярче, и необъяснимая до конца жизнь дышит
Ой, лучше при встрече расскажу)))
Кстати, сила и бессилье слов, то, насколько реальность связана или независима от того, как её называют, возможности человека, лишенного речи или недостаточно владеющего языком, чего больше правды или лжи в худ. литературе, высказанный пережитый опыт становится ли фальшивым, оказываясь под пером писателя - это из книги темы, которую я вчера дочитал

Tuntuu, että kirjalijalla on ollut vaikeuksia saada aikaan kirjaa (kelläpä ei olisi) ja on kohtalotovereidensa tapaan joutunut kirjoittamaan kirjailijasta, joka on kirjoittanut itsensä tyhjiin tarinoista. No olihan tässä pääasiassa Malmikunnaksen perhe, jonka tarinan kirjailija rahalla ostaa.
Perheen tarina oli hetkittäin kiinnostava, osittain sekava eikä vähiten ajallisesti. Mukaan täytteeksi upotetut yhteiskunnalliset pohdiskelut eri näkökulmista hyppelin silmäillen yli.
Olisin voinut elää ilman lopputwistiä, mutta jätän kertomatta mikä se oli, jos joku tämän vielä lukee.
Perheen tarina oli hetkittäin kiinnostava, osittain sekava eikä vähiten ajallisesti. Mukaan täytteeksi upotetut yhteiskunnalliset pohdiskelut eri näkökulmista hyppelin silmäillen yli.

It took me a really long time to finish the Human Part. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it because the first forty pages intrigued me but after a certain point, I felt that the book lacked a central storyline which connected Salme and her three children. The individual stories felt disconnected from the central theme and somehow, I expected the author to play a larger role in the story.
The beauty of the book lies in the fact that each of the characters seemed to be relatable. They each said something which I made mental notes of. I also enjoyed the free flowing style of the book, I didn't have to connect the dots but continue reading and everything would still make sense. I think 3 stars is a fair rating.

Tämä oli ensimmäinen lukemani kirja Hotakaiselta ja saattaa hyvin jäädä viimeiseksikin. Ensi alkuun vierastin tyyliä, liikaa yritystä kansanomaiseen mukanokkeluuteen. Tarinan käynnistyessä toivo virisi, että onhan tässä sittenkin hyviä aineksia. Jälkipuoliskolla aineksista leivottiin pannukakku, jossa täytteenä oli hävettävän ilmeistä saarnaushenkeä, ohuita stereotyyppejä henkilöhahmoina ja yllätyksetön loppuratkaisu. Suuhun jäi lähinnä eltaantuneen rasvan maku.

Ihan mielenkiintoista 2000-luvun ensimmäisen vuosikymmenen yhteiskunnan ja kapitalismin kritiikkiä. Puheen ja tekojen välinen dikotomia on koko ajan läsnä, ja molemmilla on hyvät ja huonot puolensa. Jokaiselle hahmolle puhe on jollain tavalla tärkeää, eikä sillä pelkästään myydä mielikuvia.

Lainasin tämän vain puhtaasti kannen perusteella, sitä kun voisi tutkia vaikka kuinka pitkään!
Mutta itse kirja olikin paljon parempi kuin odotin. Jotenkin mieleen tuli juuri lukemani Helmi Kekkosen Vieraat. Tässäkin olin aluksi vähän sekaisin henkilöiden kanssa. Pidin erityisesti Pekan osuuksista ja Salmen kirjoittamista postikorteista.

Ihan kiva, muttei mitenkään tajunnan räjäyttävä lukukokemus. Hotakaisella on joissakin kohdissa hauskaa huumoria ja teksti ja kerronta on sujuvaa. Itselleni hahmot jäivät vähän etäisiksi, kun kerrottiin siellä täällä pätkittäin heidän tarinoitaan. Miinusta n-sanan käytöstä - täysin tarpeetonta ja häiritsevää.
