What makes an eagle, an eagle? Or a bear, a bear? Todd's dad, a famous scientist specializing in the study of animals, has cracked the code and discovered the essence that makes every animal unique. Now he is able to create a serum that gives those unique qualities—and abilities—to anyone who ingests it. But before his discovery can be introduced to the world, several of the vials are stolen. Soon after, a sudden rash of bank robberies featuring large and terrifying animals rocks the community. Todd and his dad know who is doing it. How they're doing it. And why.
The only question that remains How are they going to stop them?
Raised on the last of the great old Southern Alberta ranches and trained in journalism, Diane recounts tales of growing up in the bend of the north fork of the Milk River. Author of countless short stories, articles, poems, plays, songs and novels, she brings a wealth of western family ideals to her writing. Nothing intrigues more than a background story. And nothing is quite as peaceful as reliving the past.
Essence is a young adult adventure-science-fiction-crime-story-mystery full of action and definitely a story to hold the interest of this adult. Todd and his lifetime friend JoJo (Joanne) have rounded the corner of eighth grade and are noticing that they are no longer merely playmates. However, they are close friends and become enmeshed with some of the “basketball jocks” at school, as Todd is on the team. The real genius of this story is Todd’s father, who holds a PhD in science…five different animal degrees! I can only mention the story of Dr. Moreau and assure you that this is not like that, but has some curious similarities. No spoilers. I don’t do that. The fourteen-year-old interactions are fun and so reminiscent of those days. The adult-“child” relationships are quite adult, as Todd has grown up with his dad, his aunt and uncle. He is also part of the adult world. This is a must read for anyone who can relate to teenagers, their curiosity, and who also has a love of the unknown, a sense of adventure, and a drive to solve crimes.
