Far from the family who had secretly monitored him, armed guards follow Odin's every movement through an underground facility dedicated to the secret project known only as Solar Flare. Odin is subjected to daily experiments, which push his powers to their very limits and beyond. Meanwhile, Wendell continues to influence doubt and suspicion directly into Odin's mind forcing him to question who to trust or how to escape. The Machine is Book #3 from The One, an EPIC Press series. Each EPIC Press series is made up of 6 short installments, intended for readers 14 and older.
Personal Response: I liked this book very much. The plot finally started to get interesting. More things started to happen to the main character. And it left me on a cliffhanger.
Plot Summary: In this book, Odin performed multiple tests. He finally allowed himself to break Earth’s physical laws and demonstrate his powers. When Odin started to refuse to do the experiment he was shown the real reason why they want to know how he can do what he does. They want to use his ability to create energy to make an energy source that would never die, but the general wanted to use it as a military weapon. Towards the end of the book, Dr. Burnette realized the general’s real intention and told Odin to stop to help her stop him from finishing the project. At the end of the book, Odin had a meeting with the general and started to break out of his prison.
Characterization: In the beginning, Odin was very obeying. He did what he was told and put up very little fight. Towards the middle of the book, Odin started to refuse. He started to go against tests, yelling that they aren’t physically possible. At the end of the book, he put his foot down and is now breaking out of his cage.
Recommendations: I recommend this book to teenagers. This is a good book for people who like fantasies that are close to reality. Other books that a person might like are Cress or Gone.

In the book, “The machine,” by J. Manoa, Odin is being tested everyday to see why he can do the things he does for extensive periods of time. His daily routine is very harsh and very demanding on his body. The tests that Odin is having to perform are getting increasingly more difficult and getting to the point where Odin is getting upset because they aren’t physically possible. Odin starts listening to the voice inside his head, Wendell, telling him to stop limiting and holding himself back and that he is capable of much more than he thinks. For a little bit Odin started to not think about the physical side of wheat he;s doing and just trusts himself that he can do it. Eventually Odin is performing much better and stronger than he was before. But soon after, Dr. Burnette showed Odin what all the testing was for. They were trying to build a machine that used the energy that Odin created to use as an energy source that would never die. It would benefit the entire world in many ways. But soon Dr. Burnette and Odin both found out that wasn't the case. They both found out that the general had other plans behind their back to create a weapon that was more powerful that the atomic bombs, something that could wipe out an entire country with one blow. Once the 2 of them find this out, they both work together and Odin starts refusing the tests so that the lab can’t get the results they need to finish the machine.
