The play takes place over the course of a hot summer’s day in an imagined area of present-day Belfast. We see a day in the life of over twenty inhabitants of the district as their stories interweave and collide. In a tour de force of dramatic writing, a whole world is evoked in a couple of hours.
The best way to depict a city is through the people that inhabit it, and McCafferty certainly does that. These are real people living in a real society which we get to experience only in glimpses. It's a very believable and at times heart-wrenching play that I will write a proper review of when I finish my essay.
An insight into post-troubles Belfast. A clever grasp of vernacular and no use of punctuation made for easy reading as a local but would surely cause difficulty for anyone not from here. A varied perspective to show the continued effect the past has on the present and a range of relationship dynamics. A recommended read for anyone interested in Belfast literature.
