Some day, maybe, when I'm old and gray in the whiskers, I'll have sense enough not to stop when I'm riding by Uncle Shadrach Polk's cabin, and Aunt Tascosa Polk hollers at me. Take the last time, for instance. I ought to of spurred Cap'n Kidd into a high run when she stuck her head out'n the winder and "Breckinridge! Oh, Breckinridddgggge!"...
Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror."
He is well known for having created—in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales—the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.

I listened to this as part of The Breckenridge Elkins Stories: Western Short Stories by Robert E. Howard. It is a classic western short story with a little romance, action, misdirection, and violence with great endings.
Robert E. Howard is one of my favorite authors. I started back in the 1960s reading Conan paper backs for like $0.10 each. I would highly recommend this author and his series. 2023
“The Apache Mountain War” is another short western, starring one of my favourite Robert E. Howard characters, Breckenridge Elkins.
This follows a similar pattern to most Elkins tales, in that he feels obliged to do something on behalf of a demanding relative, only for all the chaos he endures to be futile. It’s an effective formula, though this story is one of the weaker attempts.
Still, the blend of humour and violence are enough to make it worth checking out.
