If you think kids are nuts about horses, you won't believe how crazy they are about ponies! From Shetlands to Connemaras, Crazy for Ponies features some of the world's cutest, most graceful and well-known pony breeds. Whether they're in the show ring or out on the trail, the ponies featured in these sixteen full-colour mini-posters – and the page of facts on each breed – will make young readers want to saddle up! Includes a beautiful pull-out poster.
I reviewed the edition available at the Internet Archive, which has a Chincoteague pony on the cover.
This is a very short, so-so book about ponies for little kids. It centers on popular breeds that were available in North America at the turn of the millennium, but has small features on show ponies and ponies with jobs. As you might expect, there is very little information and way too many exclamation points.
The really stupid thing is that, for a book on ponies, the Gypsy Vanner was included. That's a horse breed, NOT a pony breed.
Two rare breeds were included, such as the Lac La Croix pony (of which there were only 50 left at the time of publication) and the Trottingbred, which I believe is now rarer than the Lac La Croix, since pony harness races seem to be more or less gone ... or at least, gone from Google.
There are plenty of color photos by the co-authors, but many if them don't have captions. There may be three photos to represent one breed -- and then you realize that it's three photos of the same pony. The representative of the POA was not a particularly good one.
The book was dedicated to a pony named Pokey ... and I've got a feeling Pokey's story would've been more interesting than this.
