Nice assortment of mystery and suspense stories. Joan Kahn cleverly combines tales of famous true crimes that range from a New Orleans serial killer to the assassination of president Lincoln. Collecting true facts the stories behind the motivations of the killers really amount to increasing suspense.
With the exception of the ghost story by Alexander Pushkin "The Queen of Spades" the rest of the stories are based on psychological terror including the stories that deal with science fiction. My favorite story was "Fool's Mate" by Stanley Ellin where a submissive clerk learns to play chess creating an alter-ego that solves his problem of living with a domineering wife in a quite drastic way...

Found this little book of stories at a thrift store with the irresistable price tag of 25 cents. I paid waaaaay too much. Couldn't finish it.
