Solomon Snow and his stalwart friends return in a second mock-Victorian extravaganza!
In their second adventure, the intrepid trio becomes ensnared in a plot to steal a priceless ruby. But what do a stubborn donkey, a shady dwarf, and Mr. Skippy the rabbit have to do with it all?
I am in the middle of a research class and writing a 39 page paper. This lovely little book was such a fun brain break for me! It is silly, and sometimes, silliness is much needed!
The descriptions of Gross “(All those shadowing master classes I gave him were not in vain)” and Short on pages 63 and 64 are excellent examples of what you may expect from this book.
“...Gross observed him steal a handful of cherries, a smoked kipper, two embroidered handkerchiefs, and three pennies from a blind beggar’s collecting tin.
Most encouraging.
He then preceded up the main street, helping himself to a pie cooking on a windowsill.
Better and better.
He then snatched an apple from the chubby hands of an innocent child swinging on a garden gate and strolled out of town, kicking a cat on the way. Clearly a rascal of the first order.
Excellent.”
Each chapter begins with its own title page including chapter name and a description. For example, “The Turret Room: A truly dramatic chapter, featuring a climax full of surprise revelations. You will have to concentrate on this one” (219).
I did know know this is part of a series, but it is. If I were in elementary school, I would be checking out all of the Solomon Snow books and reading them!
Very, very funny. Every bit as good as the first one. My favorite part was the fire juggler at the Prodigy's circus, followed closely by the recurrent short jokes (such as how the mummy of a short pharaoh was found "under a very small sand dune, which turned out to be an overlooked pyramid"). Mr. Skippy is back too, and I enjoyed his new, equally passive role.
2-7-11 pg 19 i really like the book so far...im wondering why pa dosnt replace the red jar with his green jar. _______________________________________________________________________ 2-13-11 pg 31 why dosnt prudence want to go with solly _______________________________________________________________________ 2-27-11 pg 59 I dont think the bribery is going to work because the jail seems really strict.
This Solomon Snow story isn't as good as the original story but it is awfully fun to read aloud to the kids. Mine were going nuts as the story got madcap and the Prodigy delivered her lines. Lots of memorable characters with great names.
Another great read-aloud for my girls and I - the characters are so fun to portray! Although we didn't like this one as much as the first book, it was fun to travel with Solly, The Prodigy and Prudence again!!
A satirical melodramatic adventure, similar to: "Series of Unfortunate Events." Solly and his friend, Prudence set off in attempt to save her father from deportation. A very funny adventure.
