Rate this book
Pinky Dinky Doo is a kid who loves to tell funny stories to her little brother. Join in as she tells a hilarious tale about a girl (also named Pinky) who can’t find her shoes, so she goes to school with food on her feet. That’s right—food! Then she finds out that lunch will be slipper salad, barbequed cowboy boots, and frozen flip flops. This is one crazy mix-up! What will Pinky do? She’d better Think Big!

With wacky, interactive text and fun, unique art, this book both entertains and inspires kids to use their own imaginations. Expect Pinky, her family, her friends, and her pet—the cutest guinea pig you’ve ever seen—to be a big hit with readers!

Lots of the book was confusing to me. For example, there were several places where the reader is supposed to guess if A, B, or C is what happened. But that isn't clear from the text. So when it says that someone washed her A) pet guinea pig, B) truck, C) face, it took a while to figure out she didn't wash all of them. I guess what bothers me the most is that it wouldn't be that hard to put, "What did she wash?" just before the list. Or to add the word "either" as in "She washed either A) pet..." Not to mention putting the word "or" between choices B and C.

Reading it aloud made me get sick of saying "Pinky Dinky Doo" so much. I wasn't particularly fond of the art. The story-within-a-story concept was tricky for my preschooler. So why did I rate this 2 stars instead of 1? Because of the wonderfully silly idea of wearing food on your feet when your shoes disappear! That is just the kind of silliness that I love. Too bad it wasn't done well enough that I'd want to read the book again.

Pinky Dinky Doo is a series on television that encourages children to be creative, write their own stories, pay attention to plot lines, build vocabulary, and learn listening comprehension. My four year old daughter has undoubtedly learned a few big vocabulary words from it, and I do think it's sparked off her love of writing (never mind that she can't READ yet; she loves to write--provided I spell every word for her). These books simply put the show into book form, so that listening comprehension becomes reading comprehension. This shoe/food mix up tale was a very silly story that entertained my daughter well enough and taught her to add "exasperated" to her conversation.

I like the mixture of photography and drawings, I like the drawings themselves, and I love the way the book gets readers to think and be actively engaged. Also, I love that Pinky Dinky Doo addresses the potential problem of her story within the story.
